Background: A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995.

On Monday we got to ottawa. After some fun and games with storms, we finally went for a lovely walk alongside the river, by the locks and around the back of parliament house, the courts and the mint, alongside lake Ontario with the sun setting gorgeous colours. As we came around to the front of the courts and parliament we saw some of the preparations for the Canada day celebrations and scored a free listen in on the rehearsals which was awesome! The next day we were getting ourselves ready for the drive to niagara, we managed to see the changing [View Full Entry]

Our first stop of our "little visit USA 2008"...is indeed in Canada...just across the border. School is over, and it's now time for the summer holidays for Leslie. 2 months of fun for him, and for me of juggling with work and hitting the road with Leslie and Tiffany....and a little on my own also. One more new challenge...it's now nearly been three months that I'm in a great relationship with Ma'ri. The last two weeks in Shanghai have shown me how great it is to share the same values of love and family. But these coming two months have been [View Full Entry]

Maid of the mist...trip...

Hello everyone. This was one our last places to visit so we thought we'd make it somewhere a bit different and decided on Niagara Falls. Out of everywhere we've been, this was probably the best spectacle of the lot. It's impossible to explain how big and powerful the falls are. Even up to about half a mile away, it felt like it was raining because there's so much mist coming up from the river. We had to wear rain ponchos for the 2 tours we went on. Niagara Falls actually separates America and Canada so we walked over the rainbow bridge [View Full Entry]

Howdy folks..... Yesterday I left Canada and moved into the great US of A....so here's the remainder of the Canada story: correcting my previous entry, of course I was in the western side last time I wrote! I completed my islands trip, staying with more wonderful 5W members as I went, and using a little hitching on safe islands to get about. It can be done on public transport, takes quite a lot of research and I mainly did use buses and ferries of course. I got up to Campbell River, as intended on Vancouver Island, a place where most folk [View Full Entry]

After a short stop over in Albany, New York with our friend Peter we were Canada bound. Niagra Falls was just about the halfway point for our driving and we thought it would be a nice chance to stretch our legs. We lucked out with some beautiful weather, and the falls were just amazing. An incredible natural wonder. [View Full Entry]

Tim: We woke up at the crack of dawn, so Dawn had to leave and we left shortly afterwards at 7am. As the title suggests we went to Niagara Falls today. We managed to pick up the trip for $60ca so around 30 quid. The tour also included a tour of Niagara Village and also a trip to a vineyard. The highlight of the day was obviously the great falls. For your delectation and ridicule we have included some pictures of us in stupid smurf smocks that we designed to keep us dry.....! I will also include one of me with [View Full Entry]
