***CLICK ONTO A PHOTO TO ENLARGE*** The plane journey over to Vancouver was SPECTACULAR. There wasn’t a cloud to spoil the view and having a window seat, boy what a view. We flew over the Arctic Ocean and I could see nothing but snow and ice for 100’s of miles. What an incredibly desolate place, even more so than Colchester town centre on a Monday night! As we passed over Greenland, the ice-sea began to break up and I could see enormous icebergs calving off and floating in the sea. As we headed up and around Hudson Bay the ice gave way to 100’s of miles of lowland. I couldn’t quite make out if this was swamp, or just brownie-green rock, but it didn’t look like the sort of place you wanted to crash land. ... read more

Well hello there Its been a while since we last wrote but its not due to a lack of things to tell you all about. In the last month or so we have enjoyed a concert by Sting and The Police, celebrated our first overseas birthday and taken a trip to Whistler. A few weekends back Emma and one of her colleagues received a phone call from one of the staff members working for Sting and The Police on their comeback tour. Apparently the group (who kicked off the tour in Vancouver) are fans of some of the L'Occitane product range and offered a deal where The Police would gift a number of tickets to the groups first concert in 25 years in exchange for a few care packages for the boys to enjoy backstage prior ... read more

There were signs throughout the city for the "Monet to Dali" exhibit at the Vancouver Art Gallery. The exhibit sounded great but, unfortunately, it didn't open for another two days. It was raining though and so we decided to check out the Art Gallery anyway. From the guidebook, we learned that the museum has a permanent collection of paintings by Emily Carr. We had never heard of her, but the Lonely Planet said she is Bristish Columbia's best-known painter and so we went. The girl who sold us the museum tickets was kind, giving us the student price. The discount made it easier to walk past the first floor where they were having a sneak preview of the Monet to Dali exhibit for gallery members. If you don't have a ticket, please proceed upstairs, the guide ... read more

Well it's raining again. For the past 5 or 6 days all it's been doing is raining.... I hear back home in Whitby you guys have had weather in the 30's. Well I can't help but be a little jealous since today it's only 13. I hope it's not like this for the rest of my time here since there are still things I want to do. Oh and by the way i've booked my flight home. Yep i'm officailly counting down the days. My flight leaves Vancouver at 8:25am on the 28th of July. I have a layover in Edmonton and then straight to Toronto arriving at 6:40pm. I'm getting excited to see everyone back home and enjoy the beautiful weather you all have been having. ... read more

Vancouver, Canada is only a 3 hour flight from LA - ie a 17 hour flight from Sydney - but it reminded me so much of home (just with Melbourne weather). The city looked just like Sydney, but obviously much bigger and much closer to the outdoor activities we would normally have to travel to New Zealand for. Plus because Vancouver is so close to Whistler ski village - there are HEAPS of people our age to meet from all over the world. Start saving you definetly have to visit Canada when you come visit us in LA! ... & the bonus is Canadians are much nicer than Americans :) ... read more

The next day, we started slow. After sleeping late, we wandered down the street to a small crepe shop. We spent a good hour there, drinking coffee, reading the newspaper (in case you were curious, Paris Hilton is front-page news even in Vancouver), and eating absolutely delicious crepes. After a relaxing morning, we decided to take the scenic route to North Vancouver. We caught the Seabus, a large public ferry, from Waterfront Station across the bay to Lonsdale Quay. During the ride over, we had a nice conversation with the ferry conductor. In addition to warning us (too late) about the perils of Chinatown, he told us about the upcoming nude bicycle protest. Only in Vancouver, he said, would the police laugh and ignore such a spectacle. We finally had someone to ask the question we'd ... read more

All I can say is I saw a lot of China in that last 3 weeks.. but I got a little lazy at least in the way of updating my blog. It's not as if you were hanging on my every word. I'm now back in Vancouver, arrived today. I'm not going to write anything since I'll hopefully see all of you soon. Cheers John... read more

After a number of flight delays, and one too many airline meals, I'm here in rainy Vancouver. Summer definately hasn't reached Vancouver yet, or it went into hidding when my plane landed. 15 degrees!?! I spent yesterday checking out the city, wandering across to Stanley park, chinatown and organising bus tickets, etc. Everyone here has been so nice(except that jerk of greyhound bus ticketing employee- I'm not a violent person, but was ready to smack him after the way he spoke to me). I'm staying at April's friend's boyfriend's penthouse apartment for the next few days. Great view on all sides, but I want the clouds to clear a little so I can catch a glimpse of the mountains I came all this way for. We'll be heading up to Whistler for the weekend. Will be ... read more

We decided to have breakfast at the Elbow Room, which the guidebook told us is “a Vancouver institution.” We were not sure what to expect given that the primary description of the place is that it has abusive waiters. It turned out to be a great choice. The food was delicious and our waiter was only surly once, when Michael attempted to pour coffee from the staff-only pot. (One of the restaurant’s rules, which are humorously outlined throughout the menu, is that if you want a refill on coffee, get up and get it yourself.) During breakfast, we plotted our day. We did not want to drive nor did we want to pay for the expensive tourist buses, so we planned to navigate the city’s public transportation system. After a quick stop at 7-11 for a ... read more

Finally we pulled some strings, spent some savings, swapped some shifts and both got four days off together to head out to Vancouver Island. One of the things on my ‘must do’ list while in Canada was to visit my cousin Colin and his fiancé Julie (http://www.angusadventures.com/index.htm.) The two have recently just completed the first entirely human-powered circumnavigation of the globe. I first met Colin when he sailed in to Australia somewhere close to 15 years ago. His adventurous spirit had inspired my budding one, and left a big impression on me. Meeting up with him again was very exciting. Unfortunately Colin and Julie are very busy and very popular people. They are currently still doing talks and presentations from their last adventure, planning a wedding, a honey moon and a next adventure while running ... read more
