I got offered a job in Van but then descided to travel instead. So, I finally booked a ticket to Mexico and had some really good days in Vancouver. Finally figuring out how to live on a very tight budget, eating Kraft Dinner (the classic macaroni cheese shit) and getting bread for free at the bakery on granville island solved my food requirements. I spent a day fixing up a bike I got for free from a friend and then another two days to pay off the time I worked on it. I fixed it at "our community bikes" on main street and 16th or something. Had a great time there, learning a lot how dismantle bikes and build them up again. So I paddeled around Stanley park and went down down a couple of ... read more

Next stop, Vancouver! We opted to take the cheap way, bus to Vancouver. We are on a budget you know! So we need to start acting like it. The bus station was an experience in disorganization. It was everyone for themselves. I had an older Scottish women behind me pushing the whole way. We were 6 people from the ticket counter, but if more than 6 inches got between me and the person in front, she was leaning into me. It is a shame when peolple are so stressed over traveling they find it very hard to relax. So we fought our way onto the bus (luckily, we were much younger and manage to double team a few of them) which took about 1 hour to get to the ferry crossing from Vancouver Island to the ... read more

So..... after a 9 and a half hour flight to Vancouver (and making our first Canadian friend on the plane over a glass of wine... to help pass the time of course!) we have arrived in Vancouver and what a great place this is. We haven't really stopped since we arrived as there is so much to do here. Having arrived at 2pm Canadian time (10pm UK time), we decided to battle on through and not sleep until Canadian bedtime. We checked into our hostel and had a wander around Vancouver and got used to the funny accents. What struck us straight away was how friendly everybody is here. If you stop for 1 minute to look at a map, you can guarantee that someone will come over and ask you if you need directions. It ... read more

What could be more perfect than a sunny 75 degree day, a beautiful hotel room, a happy bus driver, and the yummiest chocolate dessert ever? Vancouver, B.C. is a small city with many different ethnic groups who all seem to get along. The population is about 578,000 with a large Asian contingent but also Indian, First Nation( the aboriginal people), slavs, and a smattering of everything else. The setting is to die for: a deep water harbor, home to several enormous cruise ships, surrounded by huge red cedar, fir, and hemlock trees, and bordered by the Coastal Mountain Range. Flying from Prince Rupert in a noisy prop plane I was stunned by the beauty of the mountains. Miles and miles of dark black crenulated folds looking like skirts on Southern belles of old who used to ... read more

Day 3 The plan was to cross the border into Canada then catch the ferry on foot to Victoria. Unfortunately we had stopped early to finally catch up on much needed sleep so ran very late. Kids were disappointed but we told them we'd find something fun to do. Crossing the border was so easy this time. We had affidavits for each kid and Twinkies papers all in order. There was no line at all so we drove right up to the customs agent. She looked at our passports, asked the usual questions and sent us on our way. We drove thru Vancouver finding nothing to do plus no parking for the RV and 5th wheel. Then we happened on Stanley park and remembered going there in 1984, returning from the Olympics. We got off, and ... read more

Ok, well I'm here in Vancouver staying in a very nice hotel on the 27th floor with a nice view of the city straight ahead from me and if I look to my left, I have a view of the mountians which still have some snow on them, so I think I picked a good hotel. So after leaving Dee, Amy and Carly at the airport and after crying yet again, I boarded my plane and sat down between 2 girls, Jaimie, from Kansas and Amanda, from Chicago who was traveling with her husband Josh who is Australian. After about 8 hours one of the air hostess' asked if one of us could swap with an elderly lady as her leg was cramping up and as we had extra leg room, she asked us. So me ... read more

Stanley Park Located on the North side of Downtown Vancouver with 404.9 hectares: It is more than 10% larger than New York City's Central Park. It has a 8.8 km (5.5 mi) seawall path that circles the park. Much of the park remains forested with an estimated half million trees that can be as tall as 76 m (250 ft) and hundreds of years old. There are approximately 200 km (120 mi) of trails and roads in the park. We entered the Park from Beach Av. and followed the seawall to the third beach where we cut across to the west side of the park taking Tatlow Trail to Squirrel Trail to Beaver Lake to Ravine Trail which brought us to the East side of the park where we photographed the Lost Lagoon, Downtown Vancouver, ... read more

Today, our last day in Vancouver, was a warm, sunny Sunday. We picnicked with Ally then spent the afternoon wandering around Stanley park capturing all the beautiful autumn colours as the sunset over the city. Last night was halloween so we followed tradition and carved some pumpkins, dressed up in gory outfits and bought the biggest, baddest box of fireworks we could find. The city was screaming with fireworks going off in every street, fire-truck sirens in the background and the wafting smell of gunpowder. It was a warm night so we had a few drinks, Anna (Ally's housemate) cooked us all a feast, we ate candy and sat out on the front porch because it was such an unusually warm evening. Fireworks are excellent, we lit the fuse then bolted... and survived. We both agree ... read more

Various Vancouver The end is near. The last whole day in Vancouver began with a breakfast somewhere down in Robson street, I don't remember the name of the place. We had scrambled eggs, sausages, baked potatoes and toast, which is quite normal if you are Canadian but to our standards quite bizarre. Nonetheless, it provided the necessary energy to cope with the plans we had to rummage about Vancouver. And boy did we do Vancouver. Gastown, where it all began with some nice old buildings dating back to late 1800 and cobblestone streets. From Gastown we went exploring Vancouver's Chinatown and entered the serene quiet Dr Sun Yat-Sen Clasical Chinese garden. A must see, even though tranquility in the middle of a busy town is a relative concept. We browsed around a bit and we saw ... read more
