So the camera situation is all sorted and I've been back to Stanley Park to use it. We're starting to have some great weather over here (as in 6 degrees and sunny) so it's been great to get out see a bit more of the place.
Tuesday was still a bit wet but I made a point of getting some stuff sorted, such as my camera and clippers. Buying a new battery charger proved quite difficult because the camera is so old. (about 4 years haha!) A generic charger was going to about $70 before tax. The salesman pointed a Sony camera for only $10 more so I thought it was a no-brainer and bought a brand new camera! As for the clippers, the one i brought from home didn't work because the voltage is different over here, not just the socket itself. I ended up buying something quite similar and now I don't look like a complete bum. I watched my first full ice hockey game in the Beaver. The Vancouver Canucks won a really tight game in overtime and it was actually a really exciting game. What followed was a night where being at an entire venue is
completely erased from my memory!! I woke up with a Canucks beanie that I didn't know how I got. Apparently it was given to me so I guess now I'm on board with the local team.
Wednesday I still managed to get up for breakfast but I went straight back to bed! i eventually got up and saw Mike and Erin in the common room waiting for Adam so they could go to Stanley Park. I ended up joining them but we didn't wait for Adam as it was already after 2pm. We walked via Westend which is a really nice residential area which only a 5 minute walk from Downtown. I could definitely live there. We got to Stanley Park but we didn't see much as it got cold and dark very quickly. We took some funny photos on one of the beaches but headed back home and whipped up some dinner together. On the way home we walked cam across a park that is literally two blocks away. I don't know what it is called but the lights and fountains look so pretty at night-time. It definitely gives Gastown a run for it's money. Adam cooked a
really nice butter chicken and we decided that we would take in turns to cook for each other for the rest of the week.
Unfortunately i was very tired on Thursday morning and made no effort to get up for breakfast. i hap planned to do Stanley Park but still went anyway. It turned out okay as I cooked some poached eggs on vegemite toast for breakfast (or lunch, if you will). I met a girl from Croydon in the kitchen named Stacey. She was eating something similar to weet-bix and I asked where she got them. She ended up just asking me heaps of questions and told me that it takes about 3.5 hours to walk the seawall, which is a foot/cycling path that runs the perimeter of the Stanley Park peninsula. I made sure I headed down there around 1pm so I could watch the sunset at Second Beach, which is pretty much at the end of the seawall walk. Including walking to and from the park, I probably walked nearly 13km in the day. I got plenty of photos, including some panoramic pictures of the Northshore and English Bay, which I had seen for the first
time, and the totem poles (which are carved by the native people and represent their family heritage). The beaches leave a bit to be desired but apparently they are very popular during summer. Even though I took my time it still only took me 2.5 hours to get to Second Beach. I was a little bit disappointed as I really didn't want to stick around for an hour or so for the sunset so I headed home. The walk back was pretty tough as my feet and knees were starting feel it. I still had the energy for trivia night though, which is every Thursday in the Beaver. Erin, Adam, Mike and I teamed up with Peter (my other roommate) and a couple of others. It was definitely a good laugh, particularly when they read back the answers. i thought we did well but we didn't even place. Last place gets a "booby prize", which this time was a jar of pickles from the free food shelf in the kitchen!!
I know I was rather brief this time but this was nearly a fortnight ago so maybe the photos can give you better idea. I promise the next entry
will be better 😊
Til next time!
