For more of my photos, or to buy my book, please visit www.nickkembel.com I have experienced the 1200+km road-trip from Edmonton to Vancouver through Southern BC no less than a dozen times since birth, along a variety of routes, and primarily as a child with my family. Place names such as Kelowna, Penticton, Shuswap, Kamloops, Revelstoke, and Hope ring is my head with nostalgia and fond memories of camping below starry skies and wading into pristine, icy-blue lakes. Never before have I been so familiar with an area, a route, or a destination, and yet so unfamiliar with the names, the actual geography of it, as this part of the world. I would struggle to put those place dots on a map for you, or document their cultural history and effect on my own psyche ... read more

Galiano Island Adventure Following my glutenous trip to Vegas it was time to get back to being one with nature and spend some of my holiday time with my man (and some other couples..) It started on a Saturday morning, where I was pretty ill, perhaps down to the dread of cycling. I had borrowed a bike, which was amazing, but perhaps more of a cruiser than an adventure taking mode of transport. We took the bus to horseshoe bay from downtown vancouver. The benefit of cycling is that you get first on the ferry and you don't have to book in advance. Ferrys to the island on a long weekend are booked up early. Once we got to Nanaimo, we had to cycle to another ferry terminal to get the ferry to Gabriola. I had ... read more

Gracie's Blog: April 24th We went to the shops and we found a hummingbird that was injured. We put it in a nest hoping it would live. Mum also made a list that had five things to find and I had to find them - eagle's nest, vegetable patch, tree falling over, log and birds nest and I did. April 25th We burried birdie and we went to jump on the rocks. For dinner we had salmon and pesto...yummmy! April 26th We went on a walk to the beach, we found some crabs, we found heaps. Their were BIG ones and small ones, they were most found near the water. They scuttled side to side. My favourite crab was the red one. Kit liked the orange crab. Some crabs died because they were floating. After that ... read more

Adam's Blog: A rainy, misty drive to the ferry at Comox on Vancouver Is (yes made it in plenty of time) had us head back to the mainland at Powell River, pop'n 12,000. It was a big sawmilling and paper mill town once but they have closed down, it is now more of a sleepy fishing town or end point of the road on the west coast of Canada to visit the Gulf Islands. We drove about 5kms south of the main town to our next homex for the week....the entrance was almost mystical as the small laneway wound its way through huge fir trees, moss covered ground and ferns. The home was set on the waterfront looking across to Texada Is. the view was equally spectacular as Nanaimo. A lovely warm home, recently updated was ... read more

Travelogue - Day 4 Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada Hello everyone! - This is being sent to you on Tuesday morning as we had no cell phone coverage in Nanaimo. Monday, September 21, 2009 Last night around 5:00 p.m. we sailed out of Vancouver and headed up the coast for awhile after passing under the Lions Gate Bridge going through the narrows alongside Stanley Park in Vancouver. There was a huge sail away party; the majority of people were up on the Lido deck along with the band playing the Macarena and YMCA and them all dancing and having a grand time. Many more of us were alongside both sides of the railings as we passed through the narrows and out along Bowen Island. Because Nanaimo is only about 40 miles from Vancouver, we barely moved through ... read more

Exploring how retirement feels when truly relaxed, we floated around, anchoring in a new bay every 3 or 4 days. Watched birds, seals, the tide and incredible views, went rowing in our Rubber Ducky Dinghy so we could explore, wade/lie in warm water, hike, cut Tom's hair, picnic and other shore delights. Beautiful "Waxwing" built by friends many years ago came to anchor near us w/ new owners. The temps rose to 90* for 3 days! So we moved & anchored in a fine bay with a fine breeze. ... read more

Blue Dragons Call us expert Dragon Fly watchers. We actually feel we're the watchees. At least 6 large, gorgeous Bright Blue decorated dragon flies often hover & zip around the boat at anchor. Looking for their prey, they seem to be attracted to the boat, some shade, funny looking humans & even indoors on occasion. Hovering 2 or 3 feet away, we can see their amazing outfits. The 4 inch wing spans are crystal clear & stiff so wings crackle when touching things. Torsos have brilliant blue chevrons that match their long tails, cross wise striped w/ dark - pretty snazzy. The blue space man masks {eyes to the knowledgeable } look a tad spooky & you wonder just what they have planned. Now, seeing these beauties from a short distance is a delight. But if ... read more

Motoring north from the San Juan Islands, our old Willard Trawler "Loki" took us into the Canadian Gulf Islands. We decided to simply loaf and relax among those inviting islands. Clearing Customs in Bedwell Hbr, we lived the good life, rowing about & enjoying good pub food. Having an easy moorage, we stayed 2 nights before risking our hides going under a bridge with plenty of air overhead and barely enough water over the rocks. Whew! Off to other harbors ~ to replenish our galley, empty because of border restrictions of nothing fresh & only one bottle of wine. In Winter Cove on Saturna Isl, we hiked & peeped @ the Straits of Georgia - the Big Bugaboo when crossing, lay deceptively calm and inviting. After anchoring/staying in several lovely bays & lapping up the ... read more

A short break with a visit to Galiano Island in B.C. A beautiful place, that I understand is/was referred to as the Healing Island by the native population at one time. I certainly understand that name - it was magical, with lots of wildlife in evidence including eagles, sea otters and deer. If you are looking for nightlife and fine dining this place is not for you. But if you are looking to get away for a bit, do some hiking and enjoy nature, you couldn't find a better place. I found a little beach at the bottom of a steep trail, where I was the only one - except for an eagle and sea otter who checked up on me on occasion. ... read more

Hallo all, this past weekend Karen, Alison and Lynore went on "retreat" to Dancing Light Cottage on Salt Spring Island. It was a chance to get away and re-connect with each other. Dad and Mom had many words of wisdom and advice before we went away and this is a pictoral testimony to show them that we followed all of that advice...... In true Melville sisters style, we composed a poem (this time a haiku) to summarize our time together: Gentle deer come by Knitting, wine, scrabble and cheese Sisters' time, peaceful Most quoteable quote for the weekend comes from Karen, "The thing is...... sometimes, I can be quite intelligent". How about those track pants, Karen? P.S. 2006 Pinot Blanc (Salt Spring Vineyards) pairs very nicely with a pepper chevre (Salt Spring Island Cheese), a port ... read more
