Gestern am letzten vollen Tag der Gruppenreise gab es zwei Programmpunkte. Zuerst einen kulinarischen Ausflug in Dubai zum Waterfront Lebensmittelmarkt und danach zu einem Restaurant. Und im Anschluss einen Ausflug in die Wüste mit Wüstensafari, Sonnenuntergang und Wüstencamp. Am Abend waren wir wieder im Hotel und die ersten Teilnehmer sind zum Flughafen gefahren. Nachdem ich aufgrund von Bedenken 13 Jahre lang nicht mit dem Flugzeug geflogen bin, habe ich jetzt wieder einen Versuch gestartet. Zuvor bin ich am Freitag vor Weihnachten ohne Probleme von Niedersachsen nach Frankfurt mit dem Zug gefahren. Der war gar nicht mal voll besetzt. In der Mainmetropole angekommen bin ich zu einem netten 5-Sterne-Hotel am Flussufer und habe eingecheckt und mein Zimmer bezogen. Dabei hatte ich einen Sparpreis gebucht und sogar einen Upgrade auf Superior Room bekommen. Dieser hatte auch eine Badewanne. Dann bin ich am Mainufer entlang zum Römer und habe mir die neue Altstadt angesehen. Die wurde ja nach meinem letzten Besuch eröffnet und ist sehr schön. Anschließend habe ich eine Feuerzangenbowle getrunken und wieder einmal gebrannte Mandeln gekauft. It’s 5.30 am and Tony has picked us up to go to Heathrow - we are off again this time for four and a half months starting in Dubai and ending in Singapore late March 2019. Flying Emirates on an Airbus 380 it was a good flight eventually getting to our destination in Park Island Dubai Marina. We were staying with our friends Katy and Steve Clements who have been out there living for a few years. A good start to our travels. An easy evening was followed by an early morning getaway to Abu Dabhi with Katy kindly driving. First stop the Grand Sheik Zayed Mosque - the largest mosque in the country. This morning I took a picture from my window overlooking the Jumeirah Beach resort area. There is a big Ferris wheel and, beyond that, the Persian Gulf. I took a taxi to the central mosque at ten o’clock so I could go on the popular public tour. I’ve been in a few mosques, sometimes with guides, but have never had such a thorough review of what Muslims do there. Specifically the presenter showed us how he performs ablutions before prayer and how, exactly, he prays - first standing, then bowing, then kneeling. He encouraged us to stare and to take photos, things I don’t feel comfortable doing without express permission. Monday, 17th September 2018 Things started to slow down considerably as our 8pm flight to Singapore approached. Nevertheless, I started my early morning routine at the hotel pool. For my final swim in Dubai, I had the whole pool to myself which I appreciated since it wasn't so spacious to accomodate that many people. After the swim, we had breakfast at Shakespeare and Company again. This time, we occupied the table at the quiet upper level thus avoiding the transient office crowds at the busy lower level. After breakfast, it was back to the hotel to rest, to pack and to get ready for checkout at two in the afternoon.
