Since I needed a connecting flight to get home I thought I would stop in Dubai for a few days since I didn’t have the clothes to stop in Amsterdam. I also have never flown on Eremites Airlines so I thought I would give it a try. I’ll admit I hadn’t thought too much about the history of UAE so I did some research on my 5 hour flight over. This past December was the 50th anniversary of the creation of the United Arab Eremites. Prior to that it was knows as the Trucial States. But, now they are a collection of seven emirates making up the UAE: Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Fujairah, Ras Al khaimah, and Sharjah. Each state has waterfront, city, then mostly desert. Abu Dhabi is the capital and about ... read more

I was up early on Monday to explore the city. I started in the historic district with breakfast at a picturesque cafe and then wandered the streets and souks. Walking down the narrow streets that lead to mosques as well a small markets was lovely to explore. It was a short time that you didn't feel you were in a huge city. I was able to find the metro to head to the worlds biggest mall. I quickly explored the gigantic mall complete with 1200 stores and an aquarium that you can scuba dive in. It is something to be seen, but talk about over the top compared to Uganda. Just outside is the world’s tallest building; It’s so tall that it gets hazy at the top. I opted to not go to the top as ... read more

My fifth time back, I started at the opportunity plaza again. This was early February, so not hot, but warmer than I thought. I stopped for lunch here after Vietnam, planning Vietnamese food, but found this nice Korean-Japanese restaurant instead: Kojaki. It was empty and the staff were friendly. I ordered a nice refreshing drink (non-alcoholic) and a bibimbap - it was good and satisfied any craving I may have for it, but it lacked that sizzling hot bowl that keeps cooking the rice and egg as you eat it. My sixth time was in the late afternoon during the week (Tuesday) after I had dropped my car off for service. This time I took the metro and was taken to the main entrance, so I finally got to see Al Wasl plaza. This was a ... read more

Dubai Expo 2020 opened in October.... 2021. So, a year later, we were finally able to enjoy what has been advertised since I returned to Dubai in 2018. My friend does a lot of work there and in the months leading up to it, she was extremely busy and had canceled a lot of our usual meet ups - cycling, drinks, hikes, etc. So, to make up for it, she got me a season pass! Yay! I told her I would get her a spa day for when she finally had the time... Anyway, my friend and I made a few trips early on after the opening before he took his sabbatical to Central America and took delight in "judging" the pavilions. I think we went twice together and I went twice on my own. So, ... read more

http://www.heygo.com March 3rd - Abra Crossing and Walk Through Alseef Heritage City - Dubai Abras were the oldest form of the public transport system in Dubai. They enabled the movement of men and materials between the two shores of the creek. The real history of the creek began just a few hundred years ago. Before the 1950s, the population of Dubai was around 50,000. But even then, it had become a trading hub where merchants from different parts of the world come and stayed near the souk for a few weeks and leave after doing their business. Moving things across the creek was important for the traders, and the city had not advanced enough to build a bridge. In fact, there wouldn’t be a roadway between Deira and Bur Dubai until the Maktoum Bridge opened in ... read more

In January and February 2021, Dubai became in a way our new home before being able to come back home. Not that I really wanted to flight out of South Africa...but let say after 90 days, no real other option for me. At the time of booking we were not speaking much of the South African variant...than came New Year! Well....we were in Dubai on the 6th of January...and less than 10 days later, people from SA would not be allowed anymore in the country...and since the 16th January....Emirates cancelled all their flights. It's only been lately that they have one flight per day to Joburg. But they take passengers only on the Dubai to Joburg leg....empty on the way back to Dubai! We left for 2 weeks...and came back home at the end of a ... read more

What have I been doing during Covid? A lot!!! So, this may be a long one and I'll try to update more frequently in the future.... Work I have been working from home since March 22nd. Not much happened from March through July, at least, not much that would interest anyone outside my company. However, work was extremely busy. We are based in Dubai, but many of our projects require us to travel around the region. As such, when the borders and airports were shut down, I had geologists scattered across Mozambique, Maldives, and Saudi Arabia for work, while one was stuck just before he was planned to return from leave in Pakistan. Maldives project went on and despite only being able to get half our team into the country before lockdown, we were able to ... read more
