Salaam all. This is about that time when I update my blog, when it is way overdue and most have forgotten about it. In this episode I will detail my many adventures over Spring Break/Passover Vacation (April 11th-April 26th). Immediately after my vacation began, at 6:00 AM Friday, April 11th, I set for the Sea-to-Sea Hike, a four-day trek from the Mediterranean Sea (Yam haTichon) to the Sea of Galilee (haKineret). The first day we drove up to a spot on the coast just north of Haifa, then walked in a large circle, up a few hills, and viewed a Crusades-era coastle, before making our way to a hotel for Shabbat dinner. It was actually quite a nice hotel, with our room furnished for seven, and one of those big, jacuzzi-type bathtubs. After a lovely dinner, ... read more

Hey y'all. I do realize that is has a been a while since my last post, hence the title giving everyone my current status. And of course, a fair bit has happened since I last spoke. First and perhaps most importantly, I shaved off my beard, as well as most of the hair on my head. That happened on the 30th of March. I had it cut at the barber on campus. That turned out to be a learning experience. I learned, for instance, that a #2 on electric clippers in Israel is very different than a #2 in the US. I came out damn near bald. But I had fun with that. For instance, I got my haircut right after my Arabic class, and upon returning to the dorms, I saw one of the girls ... read more

On to Jerusalem from Tiberius.... After leaving Tiberius we drove through some more beautiful country on our way to Jerusalem. Driving into Jerusalem trying to find our Avis drop off outside the Old City I came to understand why they say don't drive in Jerusalem. At one point I was beginning to feel save in the middle lane but realized the middle lane turned left while the left lane went straight. Just when we lost track of signs directing us to the Old City and figured we were going to end up driving all over town, we saw the Old City walls and right in front of us was AVIS car rental! Wow, what a relief. There was even a gas station right across the street to fill up the tank. We walked across the street ... read more

Where to start? Sometimes, plans never happen the way you expect, so I generally don't make plans because of this fact. I was supposed to be in Amman, but I am writing from Jerusalem. The flight over to Tel Aviv was uneventful...no crying babies , thank God. Of course, losing your passport and wallet 15 minutes before you're supposed to head to Dulles was an event unto itself. Yes, this happened, and yes, I found them, with the help of my two dear friends, Deanna and Maryam. I wouldn't be me if I didn't almost lose something....I lost something yesterday, but more on that later. I spoke with the passenger next to me, Johan, a Jewish man in his mid-thirties or so. I asked him questions about Israel and he obliged. He gave me his ... read more

Shalom y'all. For most of you who are thoroughly confused by the title of this entry, let me update you are some recent developments in the Middle East, courtesy of the BBC. First, Hassan Nasrallah, leader of Hezbollah in Lebanon, declared that Israel would disappear, and that this is inevitable. This was, of course, in response to the killing of Imad Mughniyeh, a senior commander of Hezbollah. This sounds like quite the magic trick, and as much as I am enjoying Israel, I would like to hear how he intends to pull this off. Next, in probably unrelated news, Shlomo Benizri, an Israeli Parliament member from the Haredi (ultra-orthodox) political party Shas, blamed recent earthquakes in Jerusalem on legal tolerance of gays. Now, Shlomo, I am sure you have your reasons for speaking out, but if ... read more

After arriving from Cairo we settled into our hotel in the central area of Tel Aviv known as Dizengoff Square and the next morning after a late start went off to the Diamond District to try and get my camera serviced - several months of traveling through harsh environments was starting to take its toll!! Negotiating our way through a protest (demonstrating against the Israeli government's lack of action against the Palestinian rocket attacks) we made our way back to Dizengoff to prepare for dinner that evening with my good friend's Sasha and Oren. During an excellent dinner (thanks again guys), we talked about our plans for our week in Israel and based upon their strong recommendation decided to get a guide for our visit to the Old City of Jerusalem the following day. With Oren's ... read more

Salaam, Shalom, Hola y'all. Just got out of another day of Ulpan. Apparently we once again expecting snow tonight. It's a little funny the panic Israelis get into over snow. The Supermarkets are a madhouse beforehand, and when an inch of snow falls, everything shuts down (school, buses, stores, etc.). Only three days left of Ulpan before classes start. last weekend I went with a couple of my roommates went on an organized trip with at least seventy other international students to the Negev ( the big desert in the South). I went to bed at 2 AM the night before, woke up at 5 AM, and we left at 6:30 AM. I slept through most of the three hour ride. Our first stop was the grave of David Ben-Gurion (the first Prime Minister of Israel) ... read more

It's been a while since the whole team has had input on what the update says, so here we go! Kieran aka "Keys" or "Kiwi": Hi! Having a blast round here soaking up the atmosphere and being able to cross the road without 50 million near death experiences per square cm (that might be a slight exageration...) I have been a tad sick but my health is on the ride even though I'm still coughing so hard I want to laugh at myself. :-P It's so awesome hanging out with the backpackers here in the Holy Land, to see the places where Jesus walked with them (the backpackers) and to be able to answer their questions about Christianity; I really feel useful. Oh and something super cool I forgot to mention. We went to a traditional ... read more

Shalom. So maybe a week ago it snowed in Jerusalem for about 2 days straight. It also snowed once two years ago, but apparently it normally only snows once every ten years. Two days off from Ulpan for what would have been considered flurries in Washington or Jersey. It was an amazing sight though, and I have plenty of pictures. Though we missed two days, we are only able to make up one, this Friday morning, Feb. 8th. Just about everything here, except for a 24hr. coffee chain called Aroma, closes on Friday around 4:30 PM. Some places open up again Saturday, after sunset, around 6 PM. The bureaucracy here is something to be seen. You wait five hours to get a room that they escort you to. There's another office to get a key ... read more
