We had originally booked train transport from Surat Thani (in the south) to Chiang Mai (in the north)....again on a 3rd class night train. Third class seats were all that was available due to holiday travel around the Thai New Year festival, Songkran. While in the lounging on the beach in southern Thailand, we debated whether to splurge on a flight or cram ourselves into a "cattle car" for 24+ hours to get to Chiang Mai. We thought we'd check it out and went to find internet to research flights and cost. By the way....traveling has really made us aware of our dependency on the internet. It is simply amazing. I think about posting blogs, monitoring our banking, paying bills, booking flights and lodging, getting maps, finding referrals, etc. and I realize how much it is ... read more

Thailand's Beaches

We made our way out of the craziness of Bangkok and to the laziness of the beach! The journey wasn't as relaxing has we would have liked, however, but we made it here regardless. Since we bought our train tickets just a day or two prior to departure, there really weren't many available seats. So, that meant we were taking the 12 hour overnight train in 3rd class, nonsleeper car. A guy next to us at the train station in Bangkok said he was in the same unfortunate situation and bought 2 seats next to each other so he would have enough room to at least try to get some sleep. Mind you, these were bench seats only slightly padded. So we thought that was a good idea too and bought 4 tickets (which are quite ... read more

Ein Gedi and Dead Sea

On to Ein Gedi and the Dead Sea and Desert... We realized that it'd be much easier to rent a car for 3 days and return it in Eliat than to take a tour to Ein Gedi and taxi to Eliat. A rental car is the way to go in Israel. Flexibility is so nice and the tours are pretty rigid. We drove down to the Dead Sea thinking that we might camp on the beach there because lodging seemed booked. When we got there (it was HOT) we tried once more at the field school and they had many rooms available. The rooms weren't much to speak of but the grounds were great. It is more of a mini nature preserve than a lodging facility. There were Ibex (small dear with long curved, ridged antlers) ... read more

On to Jerusalem from Tiberius.... After leaving Tiberius we drove through some more beautiful country on our way to Jerusalem. Driving into Jerusalem trying to find our Avis drop off outside the Old City I came to understand why they say don't drive in Jerusalem. At one point I was beginning to feel save in the middle lane but realized the middle lane turned left while the left lane went straight. Just when we lost track of signs directing us to the Old City and figured we were going to end up driving all over town, we saw the Old City walls and right in front of us was AVIS car rental! Wow, what a relief. There was even a gas station right across the street to fill up the tank. We walked across the street ... read more

We laughed when first arriving here in Thailand....the pilot said the temperature was 86F! It was funny because just less than a week prior we were non-stop shivering up at High Camp, wanting desperately to get warm and dreaming of our arrival in Thailand. Well, here we are and we sure are sweating! As most of you know, Ben and I don't "thrive" in the hot, humid weather but we are actually doing pretty well. Our health has returned as well, and we are so grateful to be feeling well again. Bangkok is another big city...full of lots of people, cars, and buildings. We arrived in the evening to our inn in the Sukhumvit neighborhood, a more modern area of the city. It's a great place to stay, tucked away in a side alley off the ... read more

Although our time in Israel has come and now gone (by about 4 weeks) we haven't had a good chance to post any comments on that part of the trip until now. It was quite an experience and so should still be fresh on our minds. We arrived in Tel Aviv on Saturday a day later than expected (since we missed our flight out of Athens the day before). I knew that most things shut down on the Sabbath but didn't realize that their Sabbath was on Saturday. There were no buses, shuttles, etc to get us to Tiberius, our first place to stay. We were getting quite concerned and thought we might have to take a cab at an exorbitant price. Everything I read said driving in Israel was horrendous. We decided to just rent ... read more

April 1st 2008

It's been awhile since we were in Jordan but we'll do our best to fill in the details. We crossed the border from Israel into Jordan without difficulty...we had heard that it could take several hours when in fact it only took us less than 30 minutes! Our first impression of Jordan was great: the people at the border were all very friendly and seemed genuinely interested in us, and the weather was warm...ok, it was HOT! Soon, our pre-arranged taxi arrived at the border and took us up to Petra to our hotel, a 2-3 hour ride. The taxi driver was nice, although he wanted to stop a few times and try to take us to more "unknown sights" or his friend's souvenir shop that would give us a "good deal" or his other friend's ... read more

Nepal is a beautiful country: full of culture, great food, wonderful people, adorable children, and cute goats! I really wanted to take one of the cute baby goats along with me but I didn't think I could get it safely all the way through Thailand and back to the States without getting caught. Oh well, I guess I'll just have to get me one (and some chickens with a rooster) when I get back to Anchorage. Ben has even agreed to fund the farm (he heard on the trail that B-B-Q goat is quite tasty...but he's not eating my goat)! We started off in Kathmandu for a few days, catching-up on sleep, eating good Nepali food (dal baht--lentils and rice), and shopping for cheap finds of local goods. Now I have to figure out how to ... read more

Hey Everyone - We are in Nepal and loving it. We haven't had time to update anything on Israel or Jordan. We leave early tomorrow for our trek around the Annapurna Circuit and have a few things to do yet so I can't update more than this short note for now. When we get back we'll post some more pictures of Israel and Jordan and hopefully a few of Annapurna if the haze clears up. Let us know if you want any immatation North Face or Mountain Hardware gear. Its funny to see North Face jackets for $40 to $50. The crazy thing is that you can't really tell its counterfit. We had a great conversation with the man selling some of this type gear and it appears that in order to cross the border from ... read more

Welcome to Athens: Actually, welcome to Patra and a 5AM train ride into Athens. We were in company of Rick, a very nice Canadian we met on the Ferry from Venice who's family owns a raspberry farm outside of Vancouver. Heather seems to have a 6th sense at navagating the trains, subways, and buses of these cities and got us from Patra to Athens quite quickly. I tend to rely more heavily on my sense of taste and got us to the greek gyro stands quite quickly. I also found a wonderful pastry shop one block from our hostel that had the best baklava I've ever tasted. We took a pretty relaxed approach to Athens, which had worked well for Florence and Venice. The first day we took a nap and then a walk. We walked ... read more
