don't know where to start.............
15 years ago, January 2nd 2009 No: 1 Msg: #58751
My partner and i have decided to go to NZ to spend xmas with friends at the end of 2009.
Will be travelling with our children who will then be aged 19 and nearly 7.
Will only have about 4-5 weeks travelling time in total and would want to spend two weeks of that in NZ.
Is an around the world ticket the best option? I have no idea how to plan this.
Also does anyone know if you decide to book now, does one have to pay just a deposit and rest later or the full amount?
We are good travellers but wondering if visiting so many countries in a short space of time is the way to go.
Anyone out there did such a trip with a young child.
Any ideas and help would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks Reply to this

Hi Detta,

Welcome to TravelBlog.

Are you travelling from Ireland? How keen are you to visit other countries as well as NZ? (You could easily spend the whole time just in NZ).

I'd say there'll be quite a variety of RTWs available, depending on how many continents you want to stop in. Paying a deposit will reserve your seat on the plane, but tickets generally can increase in price until the full amount is paid.

'hi,
You may be right, a round the world may be too much in this short period.
If you travel from Europe, you could look at 2 stop-over on the way to go and back in Asia.

There should be a way to do a technical rtw by going through HK and coming back through LAX on NZ.

But you could also fly with Cathay, Thai, BA, SQ down there and add up nice breaks in South East Asia. It may be easier for your 7 years old.

If you book online, most of the time you need to pay straigh on. If you call the airline, they should be able to hold a booking for a long while...but you may not have the cheapest price available. Check also with an agent.

Happy New Year,

In the time frame you are looking at and with a youngish child in tow I would have thought a rtw trip would be a bit too much and would probably try PA Leslies recommendation of stopping off in Asia on you way to and from NZ.

I recently booked a rtw flight and my parents are looking at flying to Asia with a stop in Dubai and we have both found Trailfinders to be really helpful and in my parents case very competitive with flight prices. Not sure if Trailfinders is out in Ireland or not I'm afraid....

As for tickets prices if you book through a tour operator rather than the airline direct then you are subject to increases such as fuel surchages however I don't think they can increase the price of the actual seat but don't quote me. Reply to this
