Helloo Matty,
Access Laos from the west north border, u can go from Chiang Mai (If iam not mistaken it calls Huay Chai - Note that the spelling is wrong but this is the way how they prenounce it). From there take the Slow boat to Luang Perbang, it will take 2 days , each day around 8 hours and they will stop in a small village in between for over night. We had such a beautiful views and it was a good time to make some friends on the boat. DO NOT TAKE THE SPEED BOAT.
Luang Perbang - Very calm & relaxed place. The main attractions are the two water falls. (i cant remmber the names now, if you really need it then let me know). You also take a walk in the night market.
From LP I headed to Vang Veing - Nice place , and you SHOULD go for Kayaking & Tubing in the Mekong River. Avoid Happy Pizza's and Happy Shakes coz it's full of weeds ! Unless if you wnana fly, hehe.
Form VV to the Capital Vantient - I ignored Phonsavan , but if you would like to go then make sure you go there form VV. Vantient is very important for toursit, as the only ATM machine in Laos it's there. So if you need more cash then take it form there (not sure about now, because i was there 2 years back). If you want to extend your VISA you can do it in Vantient only, I think it wil cost you 2 -3 dollars for each extra day. There is a Golden Tample and it's beautiful.
Take overnight bus all the way south to Pakse, from there i headed to a waterfall called ummm I think it was Tad Lo !! stays there for few nights. It's only the waterfall there and there is a small village i think 2 - 3 KM away form the guesthouse. As I know Tad Fane is more beautiful then Tad Lo, but for me we were unable to go there because of the heavey rains. Note that there is only one Resort next to Tad Fane, and during that time it was 20$ per night.
I went back to Pakse and headed to Cempasak. It's beautiful place , and there is a very old tample from the Khamer Empire (Same style like the tamples in Siem Riep, Cambodia). It's on the top of the hill.
From there to the Si Phan don (4000 islands).
Note that some friends has accessed Cambodia from the 4000 islands (around 10 KM to the border), but they told me it was hard and better to do it in a group because of the prices. My self I went back to Thailand coz i was out of Cash.
I hope this will help you
Good luck.
