Here are some pictures from a day spent in Paris. The Eiffel Tower was everything I imagined it to be and more. The view from the top is spectacular but the queues are forever long. Its worth the wait the first time around, but I think that I will climb the stairs for a shorter queue the next time I visit. The Champs-Élysées is one of the most famous streets in the world. With rents as high as $1.25 million a year for 1,000 sq ft of space, it remains the 2nd most expensive strip of real estate in the world after New York City's Fifth Avenue. The Arc de Triomphe is a monument that stands in the centre of the Place Charles de Gaulle at the western end of the Champs-Élysées. This roundabout boasts one ... read more

Europe » Italy » Sardinia » Alghero August 17th 2007

Let me just say this...Alghero was gorgeous...but this was probably the worst vacation we've ever had. Not because of anything in the town itself (except maybe our icky apartment) but it was just a bad vacation. We went with another couple, Mike and Maria. Mike works with Matt and Maria and I have gotten to be pretty good friends since we moved here. We planned this trip pretty last minute and, after we booked our flight, we discovered that this weekend was the height of high season in Italy because it was a public holiday. It's like trying to find a last-minute hotel in Daytona on Memorial Day weekend. So, we pretty much took whatever we could find that we could afford and I found an apartment that slept 4 right in town in Alghero. They ... read more

Europe August 17th 2007

Its been long enough that I don't quite remember where I left off but I can start with Pisa. We arrived at about 5 in the morning so we took our time. We finally got to the leaning tower at about 8:30 and it was wonderful. We got to watch the sun come up behind it and there was almost no one around. The picture of us holding up the tower might have been slightly embarassing to take with a hundred other people around doing the exact same thing. Look at the Pics and you'll see what I mean. We hit up some shops and bargained lots, then we were off to Rome. We wound up staying in Rome on thier holidays and there was not much open. So we did as the Romans do, and ... read more

Europe » Austria » Vienna » Vienna August 17th 2007

Our train trip to Vienna took us through the Czech countryside and another set of passport stamps before we arrived at a more German looking railway station in Vienna. Strangely Vienna seems has main stations, on different sides of the city, and our accommodation was near a different station to the one we arrived at. This meant we needed to go for a short ride on a tram. Interestingly, like we experienced in Belgium, this tram spent some time going underground through the central city area. The next morning we first collected our Grand Prix tickets for Monza (the people we ordered them from were based in Vienna) then we took the advice of the Lonely Planet and took the #1 tram which goes in a ring around the main town centre. (Kind of like our ... read more

Its 9 days away as Timree and I sit in the Panera bread in Costa Mesa. She is painting Quentin Tarantino's Plate and it looks amazing. My girlfriend is so popular..let me explain. Miss popular is visited by old friends, old customers, and anyone who walks by our table. Her art, warm personality, and stunning good looks :) draw every restaurant patron to our table for a look at her work. This is our first entry of many to come. I am going to try and keep all of our friends and family up to date on our upcoming journey to Italia. Timree Loves your support and hopes you will enjoy Venice with us through cyberspace. For now, thats all he wrote, Ciao, Timree & Greg... read more

I've just discovered this thing is counting down our remaining days but I'm sure it's lost some somewhere - it cannot be only 20 days. Apart from organising the trip, it currently feels like we're changing jobs, doing up the house (decorator & plumber in today) and moving house as well and the list of things to do gets longer rather than shorter. But this is another one ticked off the list - the first blog entry - just to see if it works. Next I have to work out how to put photos on....might need Hugh for that. We will try to make this witty & interesting rather than just a deadly list of everywhere we've been but, if we fail, at least you'll all know we're still alive! Do send us messages - despite ... read more

Health Issues Now had all the vaccinations except the final Rabies. Thanks to Jean our Nurse Practitioner and the National Health Service this has been a painless exercise and not too expensive. So far had Polio, Typhoid, Tetanus, Hepatitis A/B, Rabies 1 and 2 and all were free except the last ones which have cost £210 for both of us. This of cause does not include Malaria tablets which will cost £36 for 200. Had we decided to go for Malaron then the bill would have been in the £100s. Also there are tablets for Delhi belly and various other things. At this point we would like to give a big thank you to Jean for her skill and professionalism. Furthermore, she's going to spend her main summer holiday on a hospital boat off the coast ... read more

Europe » Switzerland » North-West » Gimmelwald August 17th 2007

My honeymoon with the Interlaken youth hostel came to a quick end last night. After I made my blog entry (if it wasn't obvious, I was kinda hosed at the time ...) when a bunch of frat boys and their girlfriends stormed into my dorm room early in the morning and blabbed for another hour. Moved on from Interlaken to Gimmelwald, which was the plan all along and was a good move. Gimmelwald is a mountain "village" of about 150 people at about 4,000' in the Alps. What I said yesterday about Western Washington comparing to the Alps .... I was wrong. Its not even close. The amount of vertical relief here is beyond compare. The village obviously relies on tourism, but its not anywhere near as gaudy as Interlaken, although the prices of everything just ... read more

So today is my last day of work, leaving me 2 weeks to get all the final preperations sorted. Hels still has another week left, so she has the joy of getting up every morning and leaving me to sleep in : ) Met up with Benji a couple of nights back, he should be arriving in Bangkok as we speak, plans are afoot to meet up when we arrive in Bangkok (he's off to Phi Phi for a couple of weeks), we'll have to see if we can pull that one off. Hels has hurt her foot some how, no doubt a combination of too much booze and bad shoes, so if you could all say a little prayer that it gets better before we leave we'd be really grateful : ) All the final ... read more
