We ferried over from Belfast (Ireland) to Straener (sp???, Scotland) and then bussed it over to Edinburgh. We decided to spend a few days actually exploring a city since most of the cities we've been in thus far have been for rest, internet, laundry, etc. We did the touristy thing by visiting the most visited castle, Edinburgh Castle. So many people! It was nice to get some historical background to this country, but of course we enjoyed our hikes in the park more than the big tourist trap. We loved Arthur's Seat, the highest point in Holyrood Park which starts at the end of the Royal Mile (from Edingurgh Castle to the Holyrood Palace). The Palace is where the Queen would stay when she's in town & she actually was while we were there, so ... read more

The next day…. We both intended to get up early (early means before 9) but it didn’t happen. We got up close to 11 (which means we missed breakfast). We hopped on the shuttle to town and then tried to find a place to eat. We both wanted breakfast food but it was near impossible to find. We finally settled on Starbucks and got muffins and fruit. Next we stopped at the tourist center and booked a tour of the Vaults (part of the underground city) for that afternoon. We jumped on a bus and went to the Edinburgh Zoo. She had never seen a lemur before so we looked through all the lemur exhibits (there were at least 5 of them) but couldn’t find a lemur! Eventually on our way out we finally saw ... read more

Glasgow- 7 July 2007 Claudine, Marie and I went to Glasgow for the day. The bus trip was less than an hour, and there are buses every half hour throughout the day. We went without any kinda plan, we just figured we’d wander around the city, pack our own lunches, and picnic. Honestly, I didn’t think so highly of the city. I think I was just comparing it to Edinburgh the whole time, and found it lacking. First of all, it’s known more as the ‘culture’ town—more shopping, arts, and theatre. Basically nothing I was really interested in for a day trip. After walking around (in the rain, of course) we caught up with a parade in progress and followed that around for a while, without knowing exactly what the celebration was about. Something about the ... read more

Today we went back to see more sights in Edinburgh before heading on down to Liverpool. It started out as a cool, breezy and sunny(!) day. Of course there would be times of heavy rain through the day, but it really was one of our better weather days. We went to 'Edinburgh Dungeon', which is a entertainment attraction where you are thrown into a dungeon and subjected to the various horrors - very theatrical and funny for the most part. Celia almost soiled herself on several occaisions. Then, on to the Royal Mile - the street with Edinburgh Castle at the top and ends at the bottom with the Palace of Holyroodhouse, the Queen's official residence when she is in Scotland. We were very excited to see this, but it was closed because the darn ... read more

Well who’da thunk it’s nearly been a month since my last entry… geez time flys when your having fun. It’s been a few weekends of going out and discovering our one of our fave new cheap drinking spots (Berlin Bar) with hot Polish security guards, getting cheap haircuts (a lot shorter than I had asked for), dying our own hair (not since high school, the thangs ya do when your traveling, agh) didn’t turn out too badly though, and trying to get out of the hoose when it’s not raining!! You cannot go anywhere here without an umbrella. I,ve given up on thinking the weather’s going to be good just because the sun shines for half a day... if your lucky. It’s Friday night here and I,ve got the whole flat to myself. Just realized ... read more

What a good weekend I’ve just had up there in Orkney, I’ve got friends up there that I dive with, one’s a guy that first took me to Orkney in 1999 to dive on the wrecks of the German high seas fleet that was scuttled on 21st June 1919, and he’s now got a B&B up there and would welcome bikers. I went up for 2 reasons, a) I’ve always wanted to take the bike up there, b) I’ve got a dive trip planned for August and the dive operator, which is a partnership has split up, so I needed to sort it all out and make sure all would be okay when we get up there in August. I planned to come back Sunday morning but Orcadian hospitality got the better of me. I wanted ... read more

Well - I guess just another normal weather day - cold and rain all day. Until we returned to the hotel, so I took a picture of our Marriott here. On the way to Glasgow, we stopped at the Falkirk Wheel: a gigantic rotating boat lift used to connect two canals so there is a continuous waterway from one coast of Scotland to the other. It takes four minutes now to do what used to take 8 hours. It is quite a fascinating sight to see. Andrea, Celia and Jeff went on a boat ride that goes on the wheel to the upper canal, down the canal a bit, then returns on the wheel to the lower canal. Then on to Glasgow. We stopped at the Glasgow School of Art, and the Tenement House, which ... read more
