Geo: 57.2764, -5.51363July 8, 2010Portree, Isle of Skye, Scotland6:30-8:15 a.m.What a poor quality hotel! The walls and ceilings are super thin so anytime someone walked outside in the corridor or in the room above. Then about sometime in the middle night the fire alarm went off for a short 20 seconds waking all of us up. The beds are so hard! The only redeeming quality of this place was its food. When I came down to the lobby, once again the Canadians were first ones down followed by me. A single monotone alarm was still sounding in the lobby. A worker was vacuuming and ignored our question about the alarm (One man thought it was his hearing aide and started to fiddle with his ear until we told him it was the alarm). While sitting and ... read more

Geo: 57.8996, -5.1577Ullapool, ScotlandWe stopped about 11:45 to do a photo op of the old Oykel Bridge while standing on the new Oykel Bridge that goes over the Oykel River. One could not tell which bridge was the old one or new by their appearance, but it was nice to get off the bus for the lovely site. I am having a bad day dealing with the bus. I seem to notice the smells (mostly heavy doses of perfume and hand creams from the older women) and the cramp confines of the other people. We got into Ullapool about 12:45 made our lunch stop in a nice town by water. Usually on these stops I have allowed the older folks to be first to the restrooms and restaurants even though I am then rushed to eat ... read more

Geo: 57.2843, -5.71552As we were leaving the town and came around a bend in the road along the water of Loch Broom, a huge gust of wind blew us across the road a bit. It felt like a semi went past us. It startled everyone! We passed many hills and valleys, streams and heather (some finally coming into bloom!), and of course sheep. We went passed a reservoir that was very low. Scotland has had the driest winter since 1941, so many of the reservoirs and lochs are low. Also, since we are going out into the “boonies” the road that we are traveling on is mostly a one lane road. That means about every 1/10th of a mile, there is a turnout for us or the other vehicle coming the other way to pull off ... read more

Every year in February Liz and Phil join several other families and hire a large house somewhere in Scotland for a week - this year the plan was for us to stay and look after the animals as the hired house was barely big enough for them all. Then we decided to find somewhere close to stay so we could join them for a few days - they went Saturday - Saturday and we drove up on the Tuesday, coming back as far as Barrow-in-Furness on the Sat then home on Monday. Setting out at 0400 was a bit of a struggle but after scraping the ice from the window and loading the dog we were on our way - passing Gretna Green at 8 but not arriving at our room in Lochcarron until nearly 4 ... read more

Ullapool to Perth Ok...so it has been a while since I last wrote anything...busy at work with a new job, etc etc, blah blah blah - you don't care, you just want to find out the excitement of our adventures! While 'adventure' may not exactly be how you describe our trips, it was still fun to look at so, so many waterfalls, mountains, sheep, ferns, castles and rocks. One trouble we found while dondering around Scotland, was the lack of post boxes. We came across this lack of said items on our way from Ullapool to Perth - Mum had a letter/postcard to send home to Dad and no where to post it from. Luckily, we found while driving along - the bright red does help to spot them - and it also gave us an ... read more

Wednesday 15th July The coastal and highland circuit After the big day out yesterday we thought a short drive today would be enough for us.So we opted for a circuit that took in the coast and also the inland highlands. With lesser distance to travel we didn’t need to be away so early and we could be more leisurely about breakfast and even allow ourselves to indulge in a bit of junk TV in the guise of The Jeremy Kyle Show!! So after Jeremy had sorted out two lots of couples with relationship problems we hit the road back out of town down Loch Broom. With only one road in and out of town we had to go back over the road we had travelled when we arrived. This is against our principles of not repeating roads we ... read more

Monday 13th July Wagons west.......to Ullapool Of all the Scottish names of towns we have come across we cannot figure out how the name of Ullapool might have originated as it sounds rather unScottishlike. However that was where we are heading for today on the Scottish West coast. With no cooked breakfast included in our low overnight rate(we had found out that the rate for this hotel was usually GBP110!!!what a bargain we got at GBP39)we dined in on yogurt and toast. First stop and attraction for today was the large and very impressive fort built by the British a year after they defeated the Scots of Bonnie Prince Charlie at nearby Culledon Moor in 1746. Fort George was built on the coast on land that juts out into the Firth of Moray, the wide bay/inlet that ... read more
