I am in paradise. I am on the west side of the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides staying in my 4th Gatliff Trust hostel (of the same collection as the rustic hostel I last wrote about). This hostel is actually in a national heritage site and museum -- the bunkhouse is one of 6 preserved 'blackhouses' -- a traditional Norse stone thatched-roof longhouse. Few people realize that you can stay here and when they learn you can, they assume you would have to have booked long in advance. But you don't. You don't book at all. And so far, each night has only had a total of 6 or 7 lodgers -- less than half full. But we are perfectly placed here. I can't imagine a better location, nor time to be here. The ... read more

Tuesday was an easy day in Inverness. The first part of the day we traveled by boat out to the Castle Urquhart on Loch Ness and were dropped off for an hour. After our return we headed to the Loch Ness Exhibit Center which is dedicated to telling the story (scientifically) of the Nessie mystery. It was a pretty good exhibit for 6 pounds. After that we went off to the battle of Culloden interpretive center that open up just last year. The center was great and gave an excellent description of the battle, the atrocities that took place after and the significance to the shaping of the world today on how that battle turned out. That was pretty much it for Inverness, short but sweet. Yesterday was a travel day... Since our ferry didn't leave ... read more

Departing Ullapool

Europe » United Kingdom » Scotland » Ross and Cromarty » Ullapool April 7th 2009

Geo: 57.2722, -5.72765We got to have a sleep in today. Then Jess and I went down to the living room to open our pressies! The tour company had bought us presents. It was fun to sit by the fire and open our presents. I got a pair of warm, woolly socks, chocolate and a t-shirt. We then went for a walk along the beach and came to a ruined castle. After that we went for a drive around the Isle of Skye.... read more

Erbusaig and Plockton Slept in a bit today - yay! We had breakfast at the Tingle Creek Hotel as it was included in the rate. I had Scotch pancakes, they were yummy but a bit sweet and the ‘maple’ syrup was more like honey than traditional maple syrup. I met a cute and talkative black kitty in the hotel parking lot when we were leaving. We headed north up the coast from Erbusaig to village of Plockton. The picturesque village is at the seaward end of Loch Carron. This small loch side hamlet is an idyllic place. A row of neatly painted cottages hugs the shoreline following the curve of the tiny harbor. Palm trees line the main street and the whole picture is framed by a craggy landscape of heather and pine. Plockton is also ... read more

I found some writing I did in my thought book about Scotland. It describes the atmosphere a lot better then what I wrote previously. I did this while drunk, so it's going to be a bit of a weird entry. The mountains gaze over me. Warn down. The rivers that were once on them have run dry. The sun opens and shines upon trees on the horizon. The road infront of me is long. I pass stone walls, rock formations and ruined architecture. So desolate and depressing. The mind wonders about the stories they could tell if they could only speak. I sit there imagining the numerous possabilities. Often the feeling of great loss comes over me. We pass rivers, I think of the feet that once crossed them. The objectives they set out to achieve. ... read more

So here I am, sitting in some budget as fuck internet cafe that has what appears to be 28.8kb internet. Everything is working fucking slow. The screen infront of me is a CRT from what appears to be invented in prehistoric times. I keep waiting for a sabre tooth tiger to jump out from the toilet next to me and bite me.... AH!... na it's cool, it's just some old lady with false teeth. Updating this journals going to start getting a bit harder as my internet access is quite limited. I'll try and remember what happened, but it's tricky when you're in the middle of nowhere and constantly doing things. The place we're staying isn't actually available on the site I'm using's map, so I've tried to point it to the closest place. The Road ... read more
