FLYING SOUTH WITH THE BIRDS If the swallows can do it then so can I, they had vacated their black chimney nest back in early September and during a dull Breton summer there had been two casualties which I discovered on returning from the Outer Hebrides. My 17th century farm-house in Central Finistere has always been open to wildlife, bats lodge between the rafter, mice make their way through the meter thick walls, hornets have discovered the perfect void above the toilet dormer window, sparrows nest in the scaffold holes in gable end while toads find the damp mossy cool spots at the base, and each year swallows fight over who will take over the chimney nest. With all this wildlife there is inevitably death, I returned at the end of one summer to find a ... read more

Motorhome News from Scotland 3 September 21st – 25th 2012 Berneray – North Uist – South Uist and Eriskay The continuing hunt for Otters, Bonnie Prince Charlie and Whisky Galore! It’s a mere forty minutes by ferry from Leverburgh on South Harris, to the island of Berneray, up there above the tip of North Uist, linked in recent times to South Uist and all the way down to the tiny island of Eriskay, forty miles further south, by a backbone of single-track road and umbilical causeways. The pace of life will have changed here no doubt, from a mere dawdle to very leisurely. With all the time in the world and our home on our backs we chose just to dawdle, absorbing the sights and sounds... read more

Motorhome News from Scotland 2 September 17th – 21st 2012 The Outer Hebrides. Harris & Lewis 'The Land of 1000 Rainbows' A letter to my sister, Audrey. My dear Audrey, We only get to see you so briefly once a year when you join us for the family ‘garden party’ in July, but we think of you often as we travel, knowing that for you this is another world now beyond your reach. This letter is for you in the hope that within its many images there will be the opportunity for you to join us on our journey. We would love that. News finally reached us of improved weather on the Western Isles, a brief enough window for us to make the dash across Scotland, fingers crossed for sunshine, from our campsite at ... read more

Eriskay, Barra & Vatersay. Summer in the Outer Hebrides has now arrived and had no sooner had we got outside to our bikes than we were stripping off some of our outer layers that have become so much part of our life this last three Weeks. Having time in hand today we went along to Loch Boisdale and a quick look at the harbour where there was a Shag diving in a small loch and sunning itself on a small rock with its wings spread wide. We slowly made our way to the south of the island and stopped in awe at the view in the sound between South Uist and Eriksay. It was a absolutely stunning with the sun shining on the turquoise water, colourful boats in the harbour and rocks of every shape and ... read more

Today is the day of visiting a record number of islands. Yesterday were up to 25 islands so now we will see what the score will be tonight. What a difference a day makes. Travelling the first 8 miles was a joy with a 20mph wind on our backs and easy pedalling. After this we started to turn into the NE wind on several occasions to visit the small islands to the East of our route, but of course it was straight behind us again on our return. We visited Baleshare off North Uist. Next was Grimsay and off that was Seanabraigh. Benbecula followed Grimsay by a long causeway and this had the most small islands to,conquer; Floddaigh, Griomasaigh and Eilean na Cille. These small islands are either connected to the main islands by a bridge, ... read more

We were pleasantly surprised this morning when we woke to a fine, sunny morning, albeit very windy. The forecast was for heavy rain and thus our change of plan to ride to Leverburgh yesterday (in the pouring rain). However, it was worth it since we were in a very warm, welcoming guest house (Caberfeid House) and our clothes were dried out ready for today. Ferry at 11.40 for Berneray then cycle onto North Uist accompanied with a 20mph Easterly wind. Fun, or what. Bill has calculated the angle of lean to be 4 3/4 degrees to the left. As we cycled to the ferry in Leverburgh I did not turn a pedal for 12 ml to the quay and went at a steady 13mph. The wind was bitterly cold and I watched the ferry weave around ... read more

Walking back to our B&B along from the pier was like walking in Antarctica in a howling gale at sub zero temperature? The waitress at the Anchor Restaurant, Leverburgh, said that she would have run us back but her car was not here. I asked if she could go and get it for us and run us back but she said it was in Inverness. Some offer that was. A bit different to this morning when Mrs McCauley set us off with an excellent breakfast into a tail wind and a clear sky, allowing us to be back in Tarbert before 2pm for a late lunch. We even managed to find a transport cafe near the Stornoway junction for a brew on the way down. On our way South from Bernera we also stopped at the ... read more

The wind The wind. I think I have said this before, but I do not think I have ever had a day where we have been almost driven to a standstill. Our departure was one mile of 1 in 6 out on to the main road and then a very blustery ride up into Lewis. Who told me Lewis was flat? As you ride North into Lewis from Harris the terrain is much the same with big longish hills which need plenty of gears. Further North the land is more open but is still very undulating across peat bogs, where peat is still being dug, and open moorland. There are very few trees so the wind is very strong and unrelenting. About 6 miles from Stornoway we turned West and we were confronted with about 9 ... read more

Last night we were pit up in Portree by a nice chap called Andy, who told us later that it was not his house but he was just house sitting for a friend who was spending a month in Kendal with his daughter. We were a bit worried about the situation, especially when the dogs started barking at 10.30pm, and who should appear but the owner, with Andy neatly ’tucked in’ for the night. We had to hurriedly tell him who we were and settle his anxiety- phew! All went well, thankfully. The morning saw ,much better weather, but as we climbed out of town we hit heavy showers and the cape had to go on again. We made a brief stop at the campsite half way up the hill to meet Steve Lee with his ... read more

Today began early with a quuck trip to the supermarket to get goodies for our picnic lunch later at the butt of Lewis, Scotland's most northern point and most windy! We started at the Calanais standing stones which are even older than stone henge! They stand 7m tall and the top part of them have been uncovered by archeologists, although they really have no idea what their meaning is. Poor Ann had a pretty major stack at this point and fell over in the mud, I think it was Natasha who then followed suit and we had some wet and muddy seats on the bus :-(. We then visited DunCarloway which is a place that the highlanders used to live. They had an outer and inner wall for warmth - and by jolly you need it ... read more
