Things were not looking good for a photography week, although the weather in London is not necessarily a reflection of the weather in the islands of Scotland. I left the airport hotel and it was pouring with rain. It was about a 10 minute walk from the hotel to London City Airport and I was sweaty and wet when I got there. Great, I'm going to have to spend the rest of the day sitting in wet clothes! I dropped off my bag, which, I hope, is checked in all the way to Stornoway, but I guess I will find out whether or not that is the case when I get there. I kept my camera gear in hand-luggage as, if that goes missing, I'm going to struggle on a photography week with no camera. Security ... read more

First and foremost this vacation ended on Na h-Eileanan Siar, the Western Isles in the Outer Hebrides, on the Isle of Barra not South Uist, I couldn't work out how to add that to the list of options under Outer Hebrides so there we are. I also can't speak Gaelic so forgive me if I make mistakes in any names I type of this stunning place. This holiday, a year after our amazing vacation in Florida, couldn't have been more different, rugged off grid with no cell service or WiFi, battered by the elements we had an equally, albeit totally different trip this year. Things have been hectic, I gave most of the update in the last blog I just published but I've taken on a new role in my company that involves a lot more ... read more

Sara and Helen were up and out early to pick up the rental car. We finally were able to get on the road around 8:30, with Sara driving and me navigating. She did great driving on the left side of the road, but I would be startled every now and then, especially after a turn, thinking we were on the wrong side. We had planned to stop for breakfast somewhere once we were out of the city, but couldn't seem to find anyplace. We finally got to Falkirk around 10:30 and had breakfast (yay! coffee!) around 10:30 at the Kelpies visitor center. The rain had stopped (mostly) but the wind was blustery. We got to Stirling and the Stirling Castle in the rain again. After a fairly brief tour we drove on to Doune and Doune ... read more

It is amazing how many place names have been copied here from the ones in Canada .... OK ..... just kidding :-) Oct11 ...Two days...three sleeps in Stornaway.... such a nice neat town. A castle dominates the opposite shore and a comfortable walk thru the park leads to it. In the cafeteria... a Starbucks....Pumpkin Latte. REALLY!?...in Scotland ...off the Mainland. Passed right by. Had been to the Woodland Cafe where many people were enjoying lunch, snack, or tea and I had had lentil soup. The morning of the first day had been spent on the bus riding to Port Ness. What a difference from the landscape inTarbert on Harris. Towards Port Ness at the tip of Lewis, the scene was one of undulating hills covered in rusty grass and interspersed with peat banks. Some of these ... read more

I'd had a great night's sleep and was up early. We were staying in Stornoway again tonight, so I was happy I didn't have to pack up. The hostel included a simple breakfast of cereal and toast so I helped myself to that before getting on the bus for our tour of the Isle of Lewis. It was going to be a busy day as there was a lot to see. We did a quick drop in at the local Tesco so we could stock up on cash and stuff, then we were on our merry way. We drove for about an hour, from east to west, to reach our first stop of the day, Abhainn Dearg distillery. What a way to start the day! A trip to a whiskey distillery! Treated myself to a McDonald's breakfast, it would have been nicer, if the place hadn't been littered with smack rats, but you can't have everything. I made my way over to the Old Town and to the Royal Mile, which was where my tour was departing from. There were quite a few different tours all leaving around similar times, but they got us all sorted on to the right buses with minimum fuss. I was doing the 10 day Compass Buster tour with Haggis Adventures. My trip comprised of people doing the ten day trip, like me, and others who were doing a five day trip to the Outer Hebrides and the Isle of Skye. We left about 8:30 am, and had a long day of driving ahead of us, as we would be catching a ... read more

We left Tobermory by bus, travelled to Craignure and caught a ferry to Oban. From there, we caught another ferry out to Uist in the Outer Hebrides on a beautiful sunny day. The ferry glided past Mull and Tobermory before heading out to sea for a journey of over 5 hours to Lockboisdale in South Uist. When we arrived in Lochboisdale, it was 7.00pm and the car was waiting for us. The arrangements were to use the car for the 4 days then drive it up to North Uist and leave it at near the ferry to be picked up. The car was to be left open and the keys left in the car under the sun viser. I love their casual attitude here. The landscape is totally unfamiliar to us, moorland; peat covered with heather, ... read more

Sunday 22nd June - evening Arrive in Skye with no plans. Drove 13 miles down single lane to Elgol. Gorgeous harbour. Went for walk, climbing over rocks on beach. Dead end road. On way back, parked up by Loch Slapin for our first night of wild camping. Monday 23rd June Woken up at 5am by a sheep using van as a scratch post. Set off planning to stop at Broadford, second largest village on island but nothing really there. At Sligachan we wandered along pretty stream and made statues out of the rocks/stones. Moe had to keep redoing his as his competitive streak meant he had to make the tallest. Carried on to Neist Point, furthest point west on Skye. Unfortunately, the cloud had closed in on us and couldn't see lighthouse. Stayed for lunch but ... read more

To finish up the biking part of the trip, we spent 6 nights, 5 biking days, in the Outer Hebrides, or Western Isles. There is much to say about these islands, their people, and their human and natural history, but your correspondents are weary, so these photos and their captions will have to suffice to tell some of the story, for now. Except for the first one, the photos are arranged in approximate geographical order (south to north, the way we biked) and labelled with the name of the island where the photo was taken. The Outer Hebrides form a chain, with many islands connected by causeways. Two of the jumps we made by ferry, though, and we also had one long ferry from Oban to Castlebay on Barra to get there and another long ride ... read more

It was the cuckoo’s familiar chant that heralded my arrival back to 17 New Tolsta, pitched forward into the wind and perched on a boundary fence post it’s mellow voice striking out the welcome like the hourly chimes of a copiously carved black forest clock. They say it appeared early this year with the dry cold April and now with a delayed spring it still sings as this year’s crop of young rabbits graze on the first sweet grass of the year. The hill escarpment across the valley still sports its winter brunet patchwork of heather against the silver beige dead grass and beyond the inky blue skies tell me to expect heavy showers from the north. The urgency to be out there on the moor cutting peat must hold a while longer but yesterday John ... read more
