Traveling by train in Europe is so easy. Its simple and if you do get lost just ask someone and they will be happy to help. Everyone I've asked for help has been so kind. After Robin Hoods vilage I went to Edinburgh, you don't pronounce the g, if you do people will think your slow. I'm not sure if they will actually think your're slow but whatever. The first night i was there just relaxed. The first full day I was there i went to Edinburgh castle, which was kinda disapointing because they had so much closed off so you couldn't see much of the castle. But it was still very cool. And I decided that if a zombie apocalypse happens or a simalr situation occured I would take shelter in a castle, why, because ... read more

"In Scotland there is no such thing as bad weather.....only the wrong clothes!" Ha so true! Always, always take a jacket whilst travelling in Scotland. The weather may have been typical but the Edinburgh city was the most amazing place to see when you popped up on the street from Waverly Railway Station so this overshadowed the drizzle. The Scott Monument was the first thing we saw which was so impressive then to our left was the Edinburgh Castle and the edge of the old town, we were right smack bang in the middle of it all. To meet our friends who we would be staying with we walked through the Princes Street gardens with our luggage using our trusty GPS, up hills, down hills, up stairs, down stairs, through streets, across streets but don't worry ... read more

Our trip to Scotland was short, sweet and extremely wet. Then again you probably can't consider it a complete trip to Scotland unless it rains. Our Scottish trip was really a spur-of-the-moment thing as we were visiting my brother in the Manchester area and just decided to make a quick trip out of it. We left Manchester really late at night and did not make it to EDINBURGH until about two in the morning. Obviously it was pitch dark, but every now and again in the car's headlights we saw plenty of green and a lot of sheep. Edinburgh was just a charmer from the start since we drove around for a while trying to find our hotel - the Hudson Hotel. The hotel was very conveniently located to pretty much everything so we were happy ... read more

Since arriving in the UK we have had a busy couple of weeks visiting Lucy's family and friends in and around Edinburgh including attending Lucy's brothers wedding and a visit to St Andrews where i managed to borrow a surfboard off some people on the beach and get a couple of quick waves in. I also ducked down to visit London during the Olympics with 'the O' where i was lucky enough to see the gold medal bouts of the Greco-Roman wrestling (dont ask me the rules?!?!) and the soccer semi final at a packed out Wembley. We are about to head off for a week around Northern Scotland.... read more

August 12 We started our day with a hearty home-cooked breakfast to fuel our hike up Arthur’s Seat. The summit is 250 m high and the sun sure was beating down on us as we hiked up! The climb was well worth it as we enjoyed phenomenal city and water views, as well as a lunch on the top. We then descended and climbed the second peak to get some other perspectives of the view. Much to Bryan’s dismay, we then took in Palace of Holyroodhouse which is right next to Arthur’s Seat and at the opposite end of the Royal Mile from the Edinburgh Castle. This Palace is the official residence of the Monarch of the U.K. in Scotland; the Queen spends one week here at the beginning of each summer carrying out official engagements ... read more

August 11 Today we explored New Town (with a great lunch stop at a local eatery) and climbed Carlton Hill, which is in Central Edinburgh and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You can see much of Edinburgh including Edinburgh Castle and Holyrood Palace. Up on the hill are a number of monuments, an observatory and The National Monument (which looks very Romanesque). As the evening approached Hanna and Bryan prepared for a night out at the bar Hanna worked at during university. When we arrived it was absolute bonkers. After a couple drinks – including one in a bucket, see picture - we both decided that there was too much smoke outside and the music inside was too loud. Yes we are getting old. After catching a Fringe Festival comedy show inside, we decided to ... read more

August 10 We hoofed it back to the train station and headed for the airport. Off to Edinburgh! Some of you may not know that Hanna spent a school year here when she and Bryan first met. After refreshing and refueling we began to explore. It just so happened that it was the Edinburgh Fringe Festival - along with a handful of other festivals - which is the world’s largest arts festival. Needless to say the city was absolute madness. It is said that the population of Edinburgh triples during the festival which is pretty impressive since there are over 400,000 thousand permanent residents in Edinburgh. We walked around the old city and the University of Edinburgh and found Hanna’s old flat. We also happened upon a craft beer pub that served many Scottish craft beers ... read more

We drove to Edinburgh on Wednesday 18th for a three day visit. The trip started by Karla and Alex being dropped off at the spa for a pampering afternoon. Our pleasures included a hot stone massage for Karla, which was totally fantastic, Alex getting a Swedish massage and then both of us getting a manicure and pedicure. The boys went into the town centre and they went on a tour of the Edinburgh Dungeons and John Knox House which was built in 1470. They had a great afternoon learning about the history of Edinburgh’s criminal system including being sentenced, torture techniques and jails during the ages as well as a ride that simulated getting hung! We then all met up and the hotel and got checked. We unpacked and relaxed while the rain fell then we ... read more

Woke up to a sunny day and I did a run through the pentlands one last time! Nice to have a few dry days in a row! After changing our minds several times on how to spend our final day, we came upon another Highland Games right across the Forth Road bridge in Burntisland. This is quite close, only 45 minutes away and just across the firth. So, off we went! This one was similar to the one in Alva with quite a large midway behind the central field where the actual competitions were held. Once we found a good place to sit and watch all the events, we started to recognize quite a few familiar faces! Several cyclists, runners and even heavies guys that we have seen at either one or both of the previous ... read more
