Monday the fifteenth of April. I haven't even set foot in a new place yet and I've already had an existential crisis and got a hole in my trousers. I'm supposed to check out of Castle Rock hostel at 10.30 am, and as I'm traveling without an alarm clock I wake up at exactly ten thirty, pack up the shit strewn across the floor, grab some breakfast, make a hitchiking sign and eventually check out at about 11.30. I've been staying in the hostel I usually go to when descending upon Edinburgh, for just over a week, with the intention of working two hours each morning for free accommodation and going out busking at night, to boost my dwindling bank account. I've had to pay for three nights after sleeping through cleaning hours, and I've certainly ... read more

I took the Ryan Air commuter from Dublin to Edinburgh on Tuesday morning. Expecting full customs and passport checks I arrived at the Dublin airport 2 full hours in advance. Big mistake. Apparently travel within the EU is much easier than I expected. Perhaps I mistakenly took the wrong line, but it seemed like everyone from the US was going through the same line - group think at its finest. At least if I was wrong I will have plenty of company in jail. The flight itself was extremely uncomfortable. Ryan Air crams people onto their planes with almost no leg room at all. Even though I had no sleep (again, despite my best efforts) I couldn’t get into a position that allowed me to sleep on the plane. Once I sat down my body was ... read more

On this sunny but windy day, Charles and I started the afternoon with the Portrait Gallery of Scotland. There, as expected, we saw a bunch of nice paintings. Afterwards we had HighTea and the Gallery cafe. Next we walked around a bit and ended up in a pub. As we sat and drank I noticed that there was an advertisement for a Super Bowl party that will be held this Sunday. It turns out that the Superbowl is popular in Edinburgh, especially at this pub. So if you have five pounds to spare and you find yourself in Edinburgh stop by the Golf Tavern and watch the game. Tell them Jeff sent you and you may get a free package of shrimp-flavored crisps. After the pub we went to the Odeon cinema to see "zero dark ... read more

Sorry about the typos on the previous blog. Too much whisky I guess. I meant to write that Madeline and her classmates were tittering about Miss Clavel. Anyway...here's the video I promised of me driving in Scotland. Warning, this video is not for the feint of heart. BTW, it is now my birthday!!!! I will party like a Scotsman tomorrow :-) ... read more

Well I'm pleased to announce my arrival back in Edinburgh after only a year and a half. One mild difference - it's now Winter and the last time I came here with Shawn it was Summer. We've spent three nights at the Edinburgh Central Novotel, a hotel close to the heart of the capital city, situated just behind Edinburgh Castle and the Edinburgh Greens. It's about a 10 minute walk up to the Royal Mile. We were lucky enough to have Mum's penpal, Moira, and her husband, Ian, chauffeur us around in a car that we'd hired. They took us up to Aberdeen, a lovely city up north. Here, like the fool I am, I wandered in to the icy cold North Sea just to 'whet' my appetite for the water. It was quite a rough ... read more

Today went to Edinburgh Castle, ate Haggis at Deacon William Brodie's Tavern, and went on a whisky tour. It was a wee bit rainy and very windy but still fun. At the Castle we saw the Scottish Crown Jewels and lot's of exhibits about the Scottish military. At the restaurant we ate haggis and drank. I had a couple pints of beer; sadly, Charles's had two pints of cider and--it pains me to write this--one of the pints of cider was flavored with raspberries. On the whisky tour we learned about how whisky is made. The whisky sampling portion of the tour was very interesting. During it I learned two things: 1. I really like the smokey flavor of whiskies from the Isle of Islay and, 2. French men begin giggling like little school girls when ... read more

A gentle rain falls as the sun sets in Edinburgh. Charles is still taking a nap. At first I couldn't figure out how to turn on the lights in our hotel room. Then I discovered that you have to put your room keycard in a special slot for any of the lights to work. Interesting... I was disappointed not to find a bidet in the bathroom. I haven't used one since 1988...good times. There was, however, a liquid soap dispenser in the shower labeled "English Leather." I used it quite liberally during my douche (European for "shower"). English Leather has a scent similar to Mane 'N Tail. I told Charles, "Help yourself to the English Leather all you want, but don't even look at the Verticoli (my nickname for my toothbrush). Charles has awakened from his ... read more

Just returned from our meal in Edinburgh. It was excellent. We went to a Lebanese restaurant called Beirut. We walked around a bit inn the rain and then stopped at a pub. The beer was really good. So good in fact that we stopped at a store and bought a bottle for the room. The pub itself wasn't very cool. Charles and I were the only two in it. It was too modern...Katty Perry sang about teanage dreams while the A-Team movie played on a huge flatscreen TV. My main complaint was that I wasn't greeted with a "G'day Guv'na" when I arrived. :-( Tomorrow Edinburgh Castle!... read more

We finally arrived at our hotel in Edinburgh. It was a long flight from Newark because after we took off the first time we had to fly back to Newark for repairs. We ended up being four hours behind schedule. The problem was with the thermostat--the air conditioning would not turn on. My suggestion of just rolling down a window or two to keep things cool was not taken seriously for some reason. It's nap time for now--then Charles and I will check out the city.... read more

After 3 blue sky mornings in a row, this morning is a bit cloudy. Well this is winter. The Grassmarket newly refurbished hotel is so comfy that I'd rather linger in my bed today. url=http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g186525-d582548-r149479477-Grassmarket_Hotel-Edinburgh_Scotland.htmlRead my review here. After so many early trains, I need a holiday within a holiday. One of the good thing about solo trip is you can do whatever you want. And today I want a late start. I enjoyed my breakfast in bed while watching some property show and holiday scam series, and actually enjoying this. I walked along the Royal Mile, not that hard to find the Edinburgh Castle. Just before the castle there's a Whiskey Museum but you have to pay 12 GBP or so. Not drinking alcohol at all, I decided to give it a miss. I finally able ... read more
