Hello lovelies! We recently went to Arran for an overnight stay. Its amazing to think that despite being so close, and only an hour's ferry ride away, we'd never been before now. We decided to go without Beth - A) to get a little bit of time to ourselves, and B) we wanted to have a good old drive round the island and do a reccie of best places, beaches and activities in the event that we might want to come back for a proper holiday. After this trip we have decided that we'll def be back and it will be very soon at that! We got the idea for going to Arran from this nice couple we met in a pub in Glasgow Byers Road a few months back. They were raving about this country ... read more

When preparing for this trip I was relying heavily on a book called 'The Advanced Backpacker' by Chris Townsend. He has a section devoted to what an experienced backpacker friend of his calls 'the shake down'. He says that even the most experienced backpacker/hiker goes through a period of self-doubt at the outset of a long hike. 'For a hike of a few weeks, it can last days; for a hike of a few months, it can last weeks.' He warns that more than half of hikers give up on long-distance hike plans in the first few weeks. Me, being the fool that I am, have set off to do this massive undertaking without any real experience. So I've tried to include in my planning time for gradual immersion into long-distance hiking. My time as a ... read more

Hi Guys, I spoke too soon. Having entered Scotland, not only did my tent pole snap one night, but I also ended up in hospital for one night on the Isle Of Arran of all places. Having disembarked from the ferry at Broddick, I headed north towards Lochranza where the Youth Hostel is. On my way whilst passing through the town of Corrie, I noticed a seal laying on top of one of the rocks close to shore. I, of course, wanted a photo of it. It was remarkably still so I decided to get closer and went to lean my bike up against a fence when I trod on a steel girder (those used to reinforce concrete) which punctured the front of my leg. I thought back to my first adiding days applied pressure and ... read more

This weekend has been a lot of fun. We went into the city of Glasgow Friday and had a great time. Unfortunately we didn’t bring the camera, therefore, no pictures. We took the bus down from the corner of our street. The ride took less than 30 minutes. The ride down gives no indication of what’s to come. As you approach Glasgow it looks like most cities in the states, but when we got off in the city center it was as if you took a step back in time. Then you see The Gap and just realize they are really old buildings. We walked the pedestrian malls, watched some of a bag piping competition, went out to lunch, walked along The River Clyde, went to the Glasgow Museum of Modern Art and took in the ... read more

I was able to visit the most beautiful place in the UK again very recently... just returned from a stay on Arran. I can highly recommend the meals at the Kinloch Hotel in Blackwaterfoot - scrummy! Also the Indian Restaurant in Lamlash is great too... and the Lagg Hotel is good also. Pity the Castle at Brodick is so expensive but there you go... That's the National Trust for you. Items in their shop were over and above the asking price elsewhere too; the Arran cheeses were nearly half as much again there, as they were in the other shops on the island. The peacefulness of Arran has to be seen to be believed - the feeling of being well away from the rat race certainly hits you. The only time there is much traffic on ... read more
