Belfast Europe » United Kingdom » Northern Ireland » County Antrim » Belfast By clarkeyFebruary 27th 2007Brian ClarkeMy first impressions of Belfast was that it was a very grim town. I'm sure it's great if you're from here, but I'm not and don't plan on returning any time soon. It's places like Belfast that make you appreciate home a lot more.... read more

Katie, Sudie, Jenny and I left on Friday to take a 7 hour bus ride to Belfast for the weekend. Suprisingly, there was absolutely nothing that we had to pass through, or anything marking the fact that we had passed from Ireland into Northern Ireland except the fact that pounds were now the currency used. We got there around 7:20pm, found our hostel, unloaded, and headed out to find something to eat. We ended up going to this amazing fish and chips place that wasn't expensive at all(as long as you don't take into account the exchange rate), and then going to The Crown Bar which is famous for some reason or another. The bar was nice, aside from the smoking which(thank goodness) is not allowed in Galway. The next morning, we woke up early to ... read more

Since I have some more time left on the computer, I'll describe a couple of incidents in Belfast. On the second night, the Australians and I were hanging out in the T.V. lounge, when a guy we later learned was a refugee from the Sudan walked in. The thing we soon found out that was a problem was he was drunk and also drugged out. No violence broke out, fortunately, but he was being loud, arguing and smoking in the room (not allowed). He was brought to his bed by security much to our delight. Fortunately, one of the Australians is also the night porter at the hostel. The other incident was yesterday, we were told by our tour bus driver Belfast's centre was going to be shut down due to a demonstration. We also later ... read more

Sitting in Belfast International so I'll make this short. I couldn't get on to Travelblog due to the way the computers in the last hostel were set up. I made it to Belfast just fine. I got to see the political murals in both Belfast and Derry/Londonderry (my hostel was firmly in Loyalist territory, indicated by a mural a block down and the curb being painted red white and blue). I also saw the Giant's Causeway yesterday and the Bushmills distillery (as part of a guided tour). Belfast is an amazing place which I expected to be a short diversion. I met and hung out with a large group of Australians (they weren't together, but by some bizarre coincidence there were an enormous amount of Australians at the hostel in Belfast, some on working holidays, some ... read more

... read more

It was a wonderful sunny but chilly day, Dec 9/06 when my friends (8 friendly people) from the church and I joined together to climb this magnificent peak of Slieve Donard in the Mournes Mountain. It was a 5-hour walk from the foot of Donard Forest having a towering height of 849 metres (2,786 ft), with several mini waterfalls along the way. It was -4 degrees C during our climb and my clothes and shoes were not enough to cover me from the freezing wind! Mountain climbing is not my hobby but Im fascinated to do it once in a while, and feel the difference of being there - standing tall at the top of the mountain. For details visit this site: url="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mountains_of_Mourne http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slieve_Donard" target="_blank"Mourne Mountains. Im looking forward to climbing it again this summer! ... read more

‘Twas brilliant but freezing. One morning it was three degrees!!! On the same day it was 37 at home. Am I totally insane leaving that for this!! But I am loving it still. Was so good to meet all these cousins that for years I have heard so much about and never met. They were really good to me. It was brilliant being looked after so well for a while after being away from home for a while. I saw heaps of the sights of Belfast everyone was really generous and gave up heaps of their time to show me around. At first I stayed with my cousin Ruth and her husband Jon, in their beautiful house absolutely loved it. I spent most of the first few days with Ruth and her Mum and Dad and ... read more
