Northern Ireland, First Stop: Giant's Causeway!
Published: April 9th 2012Europe » United Kingdom » Northern Ireland » County Antrim » BushmillsThis morning, we got up super early (4am) and caught a 7:30am flight to Derry (1 hour flight), Northern Ireland where we were going to spend St. Patrick's Day, Irish-style. We had heard that the weather over the weekend was going to be rainy, so we were happy with the little bit of cloud cover that we saw when we arrived. We tried to check in our hotel, but the door was locked and the bar attached to it was still closed, so we were happy that we packed our backpacks lightly, because we carried them around with us for the day. We quickly realized that Derry is a small town that likely doesn't warrant the three days we planned to stay there, so we decided to head out of town for the day, to the ... read more
A Giant time up north
Published: September 14th 2008Europe » United Kingdom » Northern Ireland » County Antrim » BushmillsNorthern Ireland has been a highlight of the trip and my trip to Portstewart on the coast to see the Giant's Causeway was spectacular. I finally met up with my friends in Galway and had a bit of craic (a good laugh) with them as the sun shined down on us. It was another lovely day and as we chatted about memories of Prague and what the future had in store for us athletes were running and biking through the streets of the nice college town. It was some sort of adventure race with what appeared to be teams of two and three people with marathon tags on and bike shorts and small packs, some with helmets strapped to the packs, running through the streets on some sort of scavenger hunt. As I ate some ... read more
Like the old days.
Published: August 26th 2008Europe » United Kingdom » Northern Ireland » County Antrim » BushmillsSunday August 24th Rushport, Northern Ireland So I crossed the border to Northern Ireland. Nothing changed really except for the accent, but that changes every two miles here. Yes I crossed the border, not we. Stephan left yesterday, as planned, for Germany. But first things first. I left you at that house in Glendalough, south of Dublin deep in the Wicklow Mountains and far away from any civilization. As I told you, be came to Glendalough and found it ridiculously expensive. We started asking people if we could camp on their grounds. One guy finally told us about a spot up on the mountain right next to a little pond. It’ll be quiet there, nobody would bother us. So we went up the mountain. After an hour or more walking through the night there was a ... read more
HOME
Published: August 1st 2008Europe » United Kingdom » Northern Ireland » County Antrim » BushmillsThe town of Bushmills, N. Ireland to Dublin, Ireland to Holyhead, Scotland This is day 100 of our trip... and after much discussion, today we begin our trip back to the US. This has been a amazing adventure, with many challenges, wonderful people, memories, and experiences, but for Kel (Maureen) it is time to Go Home. Not to bore you, our "subscribers"-- that have followed us on this trip, but we want to let you know how we managed to find our way home. It will take some doing, but we plan to store the Bothan in Leese, Germany. Bob worked 34 years with a company in Butler, PA and his "old" company has an office/plant in Germany. So we drove from Bushmills to Dublin and took the ferry across to Holyhead, Scotland ( 7/17-18 overnight ... read more
Matt Swann and the Whiskey Distillery
Published: March 3rd 2008Europe » United Kingdom » Northern Ireland » County Antrim » BushmillsNow, I know what it is like to be Charlie in the Chocolate Factory, but this time it happens to be a whiskey distillery. In fact, the worlds oldest distillery. This Sunday, I went with Ronald and Minda to Bushmills, a very small town outside the surf town of Portrush. We arrived at the distillery and took a tour of the Old Bushmills Distillery. Founded in 1608 with permission of King James the I after the infamous Flight of the Earls in 1607, the Old Bushmills Distillery has been providing high quality Irish whiskey (Just a reminder: evidently, you do not want to get Scotch or Scottish Malt Whisky and Irish whiskey mixed up because Scottish Malt Whisky has a smoky flavor and is distilled twice while Bushmills Malt Whiskey is distilled three times and lacks ... read more
The "Indescribable" Causeway
Published: November 8th 2007Europe » United Kingdom » Northern Ireland » County Antrim » BushmillsToday was nothing short of breathtaking as my parents and I ventured to the north coast of Ireland for a day at the Giant's Causeway. My parents arrived Tuesday evening for what is their first visit to the island country. So far we have had a wonderful time. Our trip today was all that I hoped they would experience. We left from the international youth hostel this morning and made our way north by way of bus. It looked as though bad weather was certain to leave a blemish on the day. A steady rain fell from the wee hours of the morning and continued until early afternoon and a rather robust wind rocked the bus. As we neared the coast the temperature dropped and I was quite concerned that my parents were going to miss ... read more
A Day With Giants
Published: October 19th 2007Europe » United Kingdom » Northern Ireland » County Antrim » BushmillsI have now been in Northern Ireland for longer than a month and failed to see what is perhaps Northern Ireland's greatest tourist attraction, the Giants Causeway. Yesterday, the time had come to remedy that. I booked a ticket on a bus tour that ventured on the coastal highway along the Irish Sea and North Atlantic Ocean. We left Belfast about half past 9:00 a.m. and began meandering our way north. Our first stop was at the Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge. This particular attraction makes for an interesting time as one crosses a bridge made from rope, as you probably figured out from the name, from the mainland to a small island at a height of approximately one hundred feet. The feeling on the bridge was quite unique as it swayed back and forth under human weight ... read more
The Glens of Antrim
Published: September 21st 2007Europe » United Kingdom » Northern Ireland » County Antrim » BushmillsThere are two things that Ireland does not have: one single faucet that mixes the hot and cold water (what's with one tap for hot water and one tap for cold? I keep burning my left hand and freezing my right. Half my face is always scalded! The other thing it doesn't have is an abundance of internet cafes. That's why I have not been able to post any pictures. Maybe by the time I'm finished this blog, I'll have been able to coax this computer into cooperating. In the meantime, I'll jot some notes about what we've been doing. Words can't do justice, unfortunately, to the nine glorious Glens of Antrim, where we have been for the past few days. The Glens are a giant patchwork of Ireland's famous "40 shades of green" as far ... read more
The Antrim Coast
Published: August 22nd 2007Europe » United Kingdom » Northern Ireland » County Antrim » BushmillsToday was the start of a beautiful travelling relationship. Michelle and me winding through the Irish country side with Kristelle and Ryan in hot pursuit. Well that’s how it started anyway. We quickly realised that our car was a bit sluggish and KB and Ry’s had no worries keeping up. We headed out of Belfast after a quick goodbye to the old fella (thanks for the lift Al!) - destination Londonderry. First up was a standard pit stop at a Castle on the Antrim coast at Carrickfergus. The weather was a bit rough so we decided to drive on - hoping that our next stop would be a bit drier. Unfortunately the weather didn’t clear up and we soon arrived at the Carrack-a-rede rope bridge. This must stop of the Irish tour is where, historically, a ... read more
