Lovely day out in Smart Arse today exploring the local area to the East of Woodbridge. We crossed the Deben river and drove through the pretty Suffolk countryside passing lots of enormous tractors on the way. Made Smart Arse look even tinier. This is an agricultural area, fields full of crops and quite frequently full of pigs, each with their own little hut. Loving the architecture. Lots of thatched cottages, pastel coloured houses and tall twisted chimneys. First stop at the Ramsholt Arms on the banks of the river and nothing else anywhere in sight except moored up boats. Perfect spot for lunch. Further down river from there until we came to the estuary at Bawdsey. From there we could see across to North Felixtowe. There is a little ferry which crosses the river but we ... read more

First activity of the day was a visit to the museum on Woodbridge waterfront, a look at the replica life sized boat being built in the Longshed and then a visit to the rather fascinating TideMill. Still operational and selling bags of flour, a lovely piece of history in a unique location. The tide started to come in while we were there and the deep mud was quite quickly covered with river water which completely changed the outlook. Back to the campsite as Bob had forgotten his sunglasses and the sun was out in all its blue skied glory, we grabbed a bit of lunch and headed out in Smart Arse to Minsmere. RSPB Nature Reserve and Wetlands of SpringWatch fame. I would have liked a map to guide us but didn't get one and did ... read more

Excellent day today exploring some of Suffolk's treasures. First to Sutton Hoo, site of two early medieval cemeteries dating from the 6th to 7th centuries. One cemetery had an undisturbed ship burial with a wealth of Anglo-saxon artefacts. The burial mounds are clear to see and there are lovely walks across the site with views down to the river below. Fortunately summer has returned so we had a glorious blue sky for our walk. There is also an exhibition explaining how the treasures were uncovered in 1938 and examples of the finds. Fascinating. We haven't seen The Dig film yet but will as soon as we get home. From Sutton Hoo our faithful little Smart Arse took us a little further north to Snape Maltings. Here on the banks of the River Alde are repurposed Victorian ... read more

A leisurely start as not expected at our next campsite, Dan's Meadow at at Martlesham, near Woodbridge until early afternoon and really not too far to travel. Ideal site to practice loading Smart Arse onto the back of Chaussy as spacious and flat. Have discovered it is very easy to unhitch, hitch up again as needed to when emptying grey waste. We have been instructed under no circumstances to reverse with the car on the back so Bob's only option when he misjudged the exact location of the waste gulley by 3 inches was to drive right round the campsite again or simply take the car off, reverse the couple of feet necessary to get the 3 inches further over and hitch back on again. Problem solved and that solution will undoubtedly be called upon again ... read more

The act of writing about myself and my experiences is a very new thing for me so bear with it, I can only get better! (not 100% if bear/bare..?) After months upon months of planning, the day has finally arrived where we pack up and jet off to Bangkok. The packing has gone awfully, as I am so indecisive about the necessary items, the everyday items and the items I want to take but really don't need. The act of packing has yet to be done, but my bed is covered in all the stuff I'm travelling with, having limped round the house all day locating these items. 20kg seemed more than enough for my weight limit, but now I am not so sure looking at the sheer amount of all the gear. The grandparents have ... read more

I swear it is minus 10! and today we met Vaughns Aunty, who has moved over for work in a lovely wee village Saxmundham. Luckily our wee car made it, even keeping up with the big boys on the motorway in the pouring rain! I'm now starting to get a glimpse into the renowned english winter. After a wee cuppa & scone ( as you do) we made our way to Sutton Hoo where ancient anglo saxon warriors awaited....yet another part of history Vaughn would love to travel back in time to...much to his delight they had a museum full of Anglo Saxon memorobilia dug from the graves which are in the Saxon Hoo site. To be honest it was actually quite interesting. They used to bury their dead in ships along with their servants, horses, ... read more

It has been a week now since the final London goodbyes were said, since we filled a tired and beaten hire van with our worldly possessions, cleaned the flat from top to bottom, handed the keys to the new tenants and headed for Suffolk to deposit said goods at my kindly mothers residence. It has been two weeks since I finished work, and after five years of rigid structure and discipline in an almost school like atmosphere, the feeling of not having to anything other than that which I choose is still one I am adjusting to. On Thursday Michelle and I fly to Dubrovnik to begin the first step of our next adventure. We have no timing plans and no definite end destination but we aim to see a bit of Eastern Europe before heading ... read more

Hi Folks On the road again ………Will hopefully keep up a regular barrage of these travel blogs so if you do not want to receive just unsubscribe. Headed for Suffolk (in part because it is the nearest piece of land to Essex ! First stop is Bawdsey Quay on the estuary of the river Deben to the south east of Ipswich. This is a small quay used by folks accessing their boats moored in the river and the ferry that goes across to the other side (of the Deben that is - think of rowing boat rather than cross-Channel ferry !!!). It is really a quite delightful spot although rather spoilt by the howling gale, dark clouds and incessant drizzle ! I am camped (if you can camp in a van) in a small parking area ... read more

Firstly, if we’ve not yet been in touch in 2010, we wish you a Happy New Year. Amazingly, it’s now less than ten days before we take off on our ‘Grand Tour’ and the excitement is certainly mounting!
