The sun is still shining today!!! That makes four glorious days in row. Kath and Albert are minding Samantha this morning and not heading off to Northumberland for our caravanning holiday until lunch time. We discovered that we could visit yet another NT property on our way up so we decided to travel up in our car and meet them at the caravan park in Wooler later this afternoon when the caravan will be available to check in. From Stalybridge Edna took us through Grasscroft, Uppermill, Dobcross and Denshaw to the M62. I’m pretty sure this is the way we tried to go when we went up to Castle Howard a couple of years ago, but Edna did a much better job than I did navigating through all these small villages!! I think I lost the ... read more

Having explored Roman ruins in previous trips around the Mediterranean in Turkey, Egypt, Croatia and Italy, we decided during this visit to the U.K. to explore the northern reaches of the Roman Empire. Emperor Hadrian wanted to consolidate his empire rather than expand it so in 122 AD he ordered that a wall be built across England from Newcastle to Carlisle. It took soldiers from all three legions in Britain over ten years to build 73 miles of 15-foot wall with a broad deep ditch to the north that made it impossible to approach unseen. A protected gate, or milecastle, was built each mile along the wall, to provide protection for the soldiers keeping watch and two observation towers were built between each milecastle. The wall helped prevent attacks from the barbarians to the north and ... read more

Somewhere around noon today, when I was alternately dozing and watching the scenery go by as I rode the Perryman bus from Edinburgh to Berwick-on-Tyne, Scotland's Border Country slipped away on me and I was back in England. It turned out there was only two buses a day to the Holy Island (Lindisfarne) and the second was late afternoon, with the last return being a half hour later (the tide floods the road). So I thought I had missed out, but then I founjd out I could take the taxi for the 20 minute ride from Berwick. The island was very interesting, thanks in part to the fact that the historical centre stored my bagsa for me when I was looking around. There are many places of interest including a castle built in the 18th century ... read more

Life has generally been very quiet since getting home. I have been suffering from travel sickness or another name for it may be the "back in the UK blues". I have taken the opportunity over the past few weeks to catch up with a lot of my friends and the next few weeks will involve me going back round them all to say adios for the next 8 months!! This weekend was a special one as the Brimelow clan descended on Matfen Hall as Tim was making an honest woman of Jane. Mum, Dad and I drove up to the outskirts of Newcastle on Saturday afternoon and on arrival at the hotel we were shown to our rooms - I was in the paupers wing please don't get me wrong it was a lovely hotel and ... read more

Hexham, and more importantly, Housestead was the event for the weekend. One of Mark's coworkers happens to own a car and offered to take both Mark and Kaitlyn to this quaint little town and then on to Housesteads. First... Hexham... Hexham is most notable for its abbey. The abbey itself has been there for over 1300 years and was built mostly out of Saxon stone from the invading Romans. It has been expanded over the centuries and now is roughly double the original size. Outside of the abbey, there is a nice garden where they have the Hexham City Lawn Bowlers club... seriously flat, nice grass there. Also, outside the abbey, they were having the weekly farmer's market, and by the looks of the items, had some really nice cheese and breads to buy! From there, ... read more

SUNNY SEATON SLUICE Update - Finished work - Bring on the sunshine and let the good times roll!! OK first things first - this is strictly a test blog. We are not starting our sabbatical with a month spent touring provincial Northumberland towns starting off with Seaton Delaval. Thats not what is going to happen. The main things we are looking forward to over the next few months are heat, exotic locations, asian food and did I mention heat? The aforementioned are sadly not available in Bedlington, Ashington and the like... We are both quite nervous now with going away in a few days and that. Pippa (pictured) is safely with her grandparents in Keighley, The cars will soon be SORN'd and the taxi has been booked (thanks Gabby). The next blog posting will (hopefully) be ... read more

Hi. The journey back to Nothumberland was fine if rather exhausting. Christchurch airport was great, no long queue and friendly staff. I slept well between Sydney and Dubai. That flight was an hour late so I had no time to look around Dubai airport and spend money. They were announcing the departure of the Newcastle flight as I entered the terminal building. A slight panic! but I should have tried to miss my flight as there was a party in Dubai that night! Any way Newcastle flight was quiet so I had 2 seats to myself and managed to elevate my legs as my ankles were swelling up by this time. I slept well last night and I feel ok today. The train journey home today was pleasant. So thats it my dream holiday is over. ... read more

Hello, I'm now ready for my first long haul flight on Saturday 25th October. I don't do things by halves so I'm flying to the other side of the world ie New Zealand. Its the country I've wanted to visit since the age of 9 so I'm really excited. I fly to Auckland from Newcastle via Dubai and Melbourne. Once there I meet up with a tour that visits many of the places of interest in 21 days so I'll be constantly on the move. hopefully my next mesage will be from Auckland.... read more
