Weather Report Overcast to start with deteriorating quickly to low cloud and drizzle. Eventually lifted although most of the day was cloudy with little seen of the sun until late afternoon. Warm(ish). Not for the first time set off for Alston and changed direction. Saw a sign indicating Grasmere Reservoir only a mile or so off track so took the invitation and headed up there. Surprising at an hour before 8am the centre was open. It was primarily aimed at the fishing fratermity so perhaps that was not surprising. There were already a few working along the banks of the attractive res. Mooched around for a few mins taking photos in the drizzle and then returned to car and on to Alston. Arriving in Alston I did a little shopping and then ventured into the tiny ... read more

Part VIII 2nd June - Friday Black pudding for breakfast today…we are being so spoilt on this trip! Our first mission today was to go to Cowpen to find 14 Wanley Street where Thomas Wake - coal miner, lived with his family in the 1881 census. Thomas is from Linda’s mother’s mother’s family. We found the street and only a few houses were remaining - the rest had made way for a supermarket! From here we went up the Northumbrian coast as far as Craster where we stopped at Robson’s the traditional fish smokers for three Craster kippers for breakfast tomorrow. It was about lunchtime so we went over the road to the Jolly Fisherman and had a beer and fresh crab sandwiches, which were to die for……yummy! This coastline is beautiful and we can understand ... read more

Having said my farewells to all (including Jasper and Rory), I waved Morpeth goodbye and set off on my travels. I'm afraid all I can say about the car journey to Glasgow was that it was wet! A typical grey, wet and miserable winters day. It made me laugh, cos sitting in the car Dad turned to me and said "just think you're leaving this all behind for sunshine"....little did he know that when I landed in Brisbane there was torrential rain and days earlier they had experienced a crazy hail storm! Ok, it was raining but the temperature and humidity was slightly different to the UK, so no complaints from me. Anyway, as for the bit in between....the flight literally flew by (pun intended!). I really do think this is were my luck began. I ... read more

At last I've mastered the world of computers (I know I say this every time)! I know its simple and you just follow the instructions but computers and I have occassional, ok frequent, disagreements (and I'm sure one day they will rule the world!). Anyway, for those of you who are interested here's my story so far..... For those of you who don't know, I'm now in NZ and it's amazing! Why? Not quite sure myself! How? By plane! For those of you who know me well, you'll know that I get restless and itchy feet every few years. So, the years passed and it was time for a new adventure (I've never liked the easy life!). Well this time I decided that the uni option was just plain silly for the following reasons: 1) I ... read more

The Lake District, a wild or manicured beauty? Irregularly shaped hills with rocky outcrops are laced with carefully placed stone walls separating paddocks. Walkers seem to strictly adhere to trials that slice through sheep and cattle pastures. I stay in Ambleside, alongside Windamere (panorama). Ambleside, located on the eastern shore, about a third down from the northern tip, is a town in which the buildings have been constructed with slate that has been cut into rectangular blocks. Windamere, shaped like a finger is the largest lake in the district. This Windamere, with its towns, piers and boats superficially appeared to be very different from Lake Windamere, located in the Cradle Mountain - Lake St Clair National Park in Tasmania. That lake, like the surrounding country is relatively untouched wilderness. Yet, both were created by glaciation during ... read more
