Where in the world is Gabby the motorhome parked up? On the edge of the Roman Empire . On the furthest outpost that a Roman could find himself sent to. It was cold. It was windy and it was wet . It probably felt that the end of the world to our Roman friend when he stood there. Not hard to imagine what life must have looked like for a Roman on the edge of Britain. A desolate spot. Probably no different now to what it looked like when the Romans were here. A long way away from the sun. Perhaps in summer it may not have been half as bad . Thousands of miles away from olives, hot bathhouses , civilisation togas and wine . Thousands of miles away from his good wine and good ... read more

I know, I know we are not in Hexham. But this place doesn’t have internet connection let alone a place name this blog site understands.it is close to Blakehopeburnhaugh and even closer to Cottonshopeburntfoot and I am not joking! I’m writing this today but it will be tomorrow or more likely tomorrow’s tomorrow before you read it as the internet is not existent here. They have electricity but not the internet. And we are here for 2 nights as they send us of for 25 km or so then they drive and get us and bring us back (sounds a bit like a prison breakout). The next day they return us to that pick up point and we walk the final 26 km to Kirk Yetholm. No internet but a welcome cup of tea on arrival ... read more

And for a change not over the hills (well these ones at least).
Got the green light to go.

In Hexham we are not. We’re in Bellingham pronounced as Bellingham. Spelt ham and said jam. And to get to Bellingham. It’s almost 28 km and the first 4 or 5 are on the iconic Hadrian’s Wall path and have us going past the Sycamore Tree. Everyone, including us, takes pictures and adds to to its fame and further reinforces its reputation. It’s surprising for a wall that’s almost 2000 years old and oozes history, for a region that has a plethora of sights and excavations that are really significant that it’s a tree that is primarily famous because it was featured in a Kevin Cosner film of Robin Hood! But it is lovely. It’s beautifully symmetrically situated between 2 steep sided hills and it does look great. The Pennine Way and Hadrian’s Wall Path share ... read more

Still near Hexham as we‘ve been still most of the day. This is our rest day so walked up to Vindolanda and around the Roman excavations. Past the pub (we haven’t been able to say that for a while) and up to Vindolanda. There are a couple of novel shots from outside the pub which simply reinforces the positive image of the place I already have. It’s not far to Vindolanda but in the mist, mizzle, wind it’s a boring walk. The excavations and the museum attached to the excavations are pretty good. If you want some museum shots have a look at Julie’s Facebook page as it contains heaps. The only one I took inside is the penis shot! Guides were not available as it’s now the off season which was unfortunate as they have ... read more

What Twice Brewed is not on the blog site map! Believe me we are at Twice Brewed. Great name and one of my favourite places. Story has it that the Roman Army was camped here and part of their payment was paid in provisions (beer) but the beer was not strong enough and they refused to go on until it was brewed again, that is twice brewed. Today there’s a brew house immediately adjacent to the pub and obviously associated with it that brews brews and a sign here says brews have been brewed at this location since the early 1400’s. Who wouldn’t/couldn’t like the place. Then to top it off it even has one of those weather stones that tells you the weather. I’ll get a shot of it rather than attempt an explanation. We ... read more

Arriving in this region to explore Hadrian's wall took several hours from Las Vegas. First flight on American Airlines from LAS to PHI (Philadelphia airport), then another AA flight to MAN (Manchester). Interesting flight numbers. 437 LAS to PHI and 734 PHI to MAN. 30 minutes delay was made up enroute. Find I was upgraded for next leg which meant admiral club access for my 4+ hour layover. First photo leaving Las Vegas but says welcome. Second is guacamole to order at PHI. The flight from Philadelphia to Manchester was delayed almost an hour in departing. Enjoyed the fully reclining business class seat. Allowed for about 4 hours of good rest during the flight. After a good dinner and good breakfast on the flight we approached Manchester and it was impressive to see the brilliant greens ... read more

I got up around 7:30. When I drew back the curtains, I got a surprise, it was very foggy out there. I was wondering if it would even be possible to walk as I wouldn't be able to see a thing. However as time progress the fog receded. It did, however, still look cold and miserable. Ah, the British weather so unpredictable, especially after yesterday was so nice and warm. I pottered around getting ready, drinking coffee, packing my bag and watching TV, until it was time for me to go down to breakfast. When I had checked in the night before, I had selected what type of breakfast I wanted and it what time I wanted it. Of course, I had opted for the full Northumbrian and I helped myself to juice, coffee and toast, ... read more

What a long day! I got up early around 7 am. I had slept really well, only waking a couple of times in the early morning. It had rained again during the night, but was clear when I got up. The bacon butty I had ordered arrived promptly at 8 am. I quickly devoured its deliciousness, and went over to the farmhouse to pay my £2.50 for it. I got to meet the couple that own the farm, very friendly, nice people. Since I had a long day of hiking ahead of me, I didn't hang around and was on my way by 8:15. I got back on the trail and followed the path through fields for half a mile until I reached the village of Walton proper. I got a little lost here as I ... read more

We have reached the halfway point of our walk along Hadrian's wall passing the highest point on the trail at 345 m above sea level just before the village of Once Brewed, home of the Twice Brewed Inn. We crossed from Cumbria to Northumberland and the scenery changed from the gently rolling farmland to the rugged windswept moors and crags. We also crossed the watershed so instead of flowing to the Irish sea, all the rivers we encounter in the next section will be flowing to the North Sea. In the last two days there has been far more direct evidence of the wall with many sections of original wall. From Bowness on Solway to Gilsland the wall was originally made of turf and wood. From Willowford the wall was made of stone and there are ... read more
