A Northerner’s Guide to Tripping in Northumberland After another exhilarating adventure in Northumberland, possibly my favourite British county (although I am biased), I decided I’d like to share some of my favourite things about this beautiful rural region with my fellow travellers! These recommendations are the product of many, many journeys through the region, in the hope that you can pack all of these Northern delights into an adventure of your own. Food: Craster I couldn’t recommend a trip to Northumberland without mentioning the Jolly Fisherman by name. This Craster pub is an absolute treat for ale enthusiasts (I’d go for the Timothy Taylor Landlord - delicious pale ale) and has an evening menu packed with scrumptious fresh seafood. Add to that the panoramic sea views and warm local atmosphere and you’ve got yourself an unmissable ... read more

So my birthday-trip-blog-entry took longer than expected to finish, and I apologize for that. But the explanation is very simple. Just kidding. No this didn't happen to me (no car, out-of-country driver's license). What happened to me for real was (is) the end of the semester clinic/case reports/exams/essays/working out Student Loans for next year/realizing I analyzed an assessment wrong and had to do it again, twice... etc. The fact that I'm typing coherently is actually pretty good, all things considered. Anyway. Last week I had the pleasure of turning one year older, and in honor of that I took a trip over the weekend, to a little island (or a TINY island, depending on the tides) called Lindisfarne, or Holy Island. It is just off the northeast coast, slightly south of Berwick upo... read more

Today we went on a boat trip to the Farne Islands. Decided to write a single blog entry about this as there are a lot of bird photos (they go onto a second page)! The Farne Islands are one of the reasons that I wanted to come to Northumberland. They are home to a wide variety of sea birds including 70,000 puffins! All the boat trips go from Seahouses and although there are 4 companies running trips there is really nothing to choose between. They all cost the same and leave at about the same time (they stagger the departures by 5 minutes as there is only one space to board the boat). We went for serenity II for no real good reason apart from the fact it had a toilet on board! It takes about ... read more

On Sunday we were up bright and early for a drive out to Holy Island which can only be reached by a causeway on low tide. This island is out in the North Sea and is home to Lindisfarne Castle and Lindisfarne Priory. The castle was much more modern than Alnwick as part of the castle hadn't even been built until the early 1900s. It was also much smaller but had an excellent view of the North Sea and Bamburgh Castle could be seen, distantly, from the walls. The priory was a ruin, much like Fountaines Abbey. There was a working church next to the ruin and a cemetery. This priory is where both St. Aiden and St. Cuthbert lived for a time. After visiting the Priory, Kia and I had a quick lunch and then ... read more

This weekend I went to the The Farne Islands diving with my mum and a group of MCS divers. We were diving with Farne Divers, and stayed in Beadnell (near Seahouses) in their accommodation. It was basic but good. Big cooked breakfasts supplied every morning. The weather was good, and the diving was great. The sea was flat, the viz was great. The dives were all scenic ones (glad I had a wreck fix last weekend!). We noted down what we saw and filled in seasearch forms for the dives. The water was a bit colder than Newquay - 13'c BRRR but it is up north! We had dinner at the local pub, which was good (not as expensive as the previous weekend!) Strange couple of weeks - drove past Stonehenge at the beginning of the ... read more
