I arrived in St Pancras Station on the day of the strike. So, aside from the already chaotic travel season, London workers decided to plan a transportation strike that weekend. I have little luck with the London Underground the last couple of trips... However, I knew this was coming so mentally prepared myself to have a hard commute to our hotel. C was texting me on her progress from Heathrow, where she had taken a car the hotel had sent for her, and they also encountered quite a bit of traffic. I saw huge line at the station for the underground, and decided to try my hand at a taxi. The line was slow but it was moving. While in line, I checked out the uber possibilities and after getting abandoned by 2 cars the third ... read more

We had decided to have a day in London after leaving the family in Peterborough. Plans made and a hotel booked but everything changed overtime. We booked a hotel near Terminals 2 and 3 as we were flying from Terminal 2. We booked two nights as our flight was leaving at 9:45 am. Ultimately our flight was changed twice and then cancelled. The replacement flight scheduled to leave at 21:15 and from Terminal 5. We now had two days to fill. We said goodbye to our family and caught the train to London Kings Cross, the tube to Terminals 2 and 3 and then walked to our hotel and checked in. Day one - London We caught the underground into London using the new Elizabeth line. Air- conditioned, how fabulous. It is the poor man’s Heathrow ... read more

Today was a travel day in the truest since of the word. We had a great breakfast at our guesthouse and said our goodbyes. We loaded our luggage to the street and sat in the garden to wait for our taxi. Because of the train strikes in the UK we had to make alternate arrangements to get to the main train line at Oxenholme. It seemed that most of the mainline trains were running but the smaller connecting were not. Our connection from Windermere was cancelled, so we hired a taxi….who was late. Once our taxi arrived…20 minutes late….we hurried to load our luggage and get going. It was about 30 minutes to Oxenholme train station. And our train was set to leave in 43 minutes. I don’t like cutting it that close, especially with all ... read more

This blog entry is going to be completely indulgent, so please don't hold it against me as it was all a complete novelty for us! Anyway, we did the online check-in, as required, 24 hours before our flight and we discovered that we had been upgraded to Business Class, or "Club Class" as they call it on British Airways. Yippee - time to start gloating to our poor offspring, who are not coming with us on this holiday. We had tried to go for the Pod-Parking again (another novelty that we quite enjoyed - see ), but to park there for two weeks was way more expensive than just getting a taxi, so we went for that option instead. The flight was at 2.15pm, so that meant that we were able to leave home at a ... read more

From Smartraveler.gov.au: Heathrow Airport in London is capping the number of departing passengers it can process daily to 100,000. The restriction is causing delays and cancellations to international flights travelling to and from the airport. The restriction on passenger numbers is expected to last for several months. If you're travelling through Heathrow in the coming weeks, plan ahead. Contact your airline to confirm your flights.Ensure you take out travel insurance that covers you for flight cancellations.Be prepared for long wait times at the airport.Have contingency plans in place if your flight is delayed or cancelled and you're overseas longer than expected. SAT, 23 JUL 2022 TRAIN TO LONDON Rabbie's Tours, tour provider for the 5-Day Discover Wales Small-Group Tour from London, normally does not secure accommodations for any of the nights before, during or after the tour and there is no welcome reception or farewell dinner included in the tour; however, I learned that, because I had booked through Tourradar, it had secured those hotel rooms on my behalf for the four nights we would be on the road. With no hotel as a starting point, I chose a Comfort Inn within walking distance of the Monday morning meeting point, Greenline Coach Terminal. Eurostar is an international high-speed rail service that connects England with France, Belgium and the Netherlands via the Channel Tunnel which passes underneath the English Channel. I would catch the high-speed train (up to ... read more

If I'd never heard anything about London's weather, I would say it’s broiling hot based on my experiences there. It reached 100F for the first time ever during my stay in 2003 and passed 40C (104F) for the first time in history yesterday. Of course, these temperatures at only 20% humidity wouldn’t be anything special in New Delhi or Dubai or Houston, but London isn’t at all built for it. Even places with air conditioning like department stores and museums didn’t have the BTUs to keep up. We had to come south from Edinburgh early because trains were projected to be canceled due to the tracks buckling. I don’t know if the train lines in Spain (much hotter) are made of different materials? Luckily, we stayed in a major hotel and were comfortable enough inside. But ... read more

Dear All Greetings from London. It is the beginning of the summer holidays, and I am once more on the eve of an epic summer journey. Although I have done summer journeys for the last two years, these were both based in the UK, and thus this is my first epic travel adventure abroad since 2019. I am excited. Tomorrow I head up north, to begin a five-and-a-half week trip around Scandinavia. I first fly to Oslo where I will be spending around two weeks travelling through southern Norway. Then I take a ferry over to the northern tip of Denmark for a few days, before catching another ferry right across the North Sea and into the Atlantic Ocean for a week on the Faroe Islands. From here I take a final ferry further north and ... read more
