My next trip: to university
Published: March 22nd 2011Europe » United Kingdom » England » Greater London » HolbornI've been waiting for a big reason to get involve din this blog again and it's turned up. I'm preparing to take another year out of work for travelling: but not the backpacking type. I've quit my job to become a student. I'm applying to study for a Master's degree in Latin American Studies at the University of London, starting September 2011. Note there that I've quit my job but I am still applying for the course. Which means I have no place yet and I'm taking a bit of a leap of faith. I don't finish work until end of May so I've got two more pay packets to enjoy before I become unemployed. I'll then have three months of said unemployment to play with before I start studenthood - that's if I get in. ... read more
British Hipsters and Wiggers
Published: October 2nd 2011Europe » United Kingdom » England » Greater London » HolbornAs mentioned many times, I do not travel for “culture”, “breath-taking scenery” and “gaining appreciation”. I am fully aware this alienates me from 99% of Travelblog and the 1% who read my shit are lonely single men who haven’t discovered free online porn, dating sites or craigslist hookers and sit there whacking off as they read about me whacking off to some girl I haven’t even gotten to first base with. I travel to have fun. Which does not mean I drop money on a plane ticket so I can pay an entrance fee to stare at objects I could’ve easily stared at by typing “London Musem of Art” in Google Image search from the comfort of my American home. Then again, I do drop money on a plane ticket and pay an entrance fee to ... read more
Back to reality with a bump
Published: September 21st 2010Europe » United Kingdom » England » Greater London » HolbornDespite the fact that I only have 3 weeks in London before I head off to Asia, I experienced the biggest comedown of my life. I have had nearly 6 months off work and I was doing pretty much everything in life that I’ve always wanted to do. So coming back home even for 3 weeks was no picnic. Don’t get me wrong, I’m proud to be British for all of our quirks and apparently I have an ‘awesome’ accent….Americans love me! Still, I was greeted to miserable weather and then thought ‘What the hell am I doing here? Really?’ I could tell when I was back home when I got barged by some woman in the Tube. Plus getting on the tube with 2 huge backpacks means you just look like a terrorist. I gave ... read more
Feeling that I might have been stretching the friendship of my Dad's best mate's second cousin; James and his wife, Sheree, I was all too thankful to meet up with Hannah and her Brother, Sam after work for a quick catch up. After pleasantries were exchanged and a brief summary on my current living arrangements (which I might add have been fabulous, if permitted I would have been more than happy to live with James and Sheree the entire time whilst in London) we took up to meet their American flight attendant cousin who was having a stop over. Yes, he was gay - sorry to stereo type, but what male flight attendant is not... either they are an over the top personality proving their gayness (because the bleached hair and limp wrist were not enough) ... read more
My Love for London Never Dies
Published: September 5th 2010Europe » United Kingdom » England » Greater London » HolbornI thought of this blog title when I saw the musical Love Never Dies on my first evening in London. I feel this way about London and is one of my favourite cities in the world to visit. I was in London at the end of July and a month later I was back! The purpose of the trip is to spend a day in Brighton (See )and check out The Royal Pavilion. It worked out cheaper if I travelled to Brighton from London than from Leeds. On the Sunday, I spent a day in London before catching my train home to Leeds. I was staying very near St Paul's Cathedral and Paternoster Square in the YHA Hostel. The hostel was adequate and got a my own room for only 25 GBP per night which was ... read more
Studying with the theatre gurus, Goodbye Cov. and Hello London Theatre
Published: July 18th 2010Europe » United Kingdom » England » Greater London » HolbornHello everyone! Hope you are doing well. I am just sitting here in the Gatwick Airport, checked-in and getting ready to fly to Dublin this afternoon. It has been a wonderful experience being here in England, but it is time to seek out a new adventure in Ireland. This past week has been busy and I got quite sick so I wasn't online much. I think my tiredness was catching up on me and that the weather changing made life a bit difficult. After my weekend off we came back to two more days of class on Script work and Mantle of the Expert as well as some fun discussion on assessment and evaluation and sharing of resources. We had two workshops at the University of Warwick with well-known professors Joe Winston and Jonothon Neelands. One ... read more
Spendin' Her Days on the Trains...
Published: June 22nd 2009Europe » United Kingdom » England » Greater London » HolbornWe spoke with our internship department today to find out more information in regards to our locations. I’m brain-fried now from trying to find mine. Apparently, mine is so far off the beaten track that I have to catch a bus as soon as I get off the underground, otherwise I won’t make it there on time. Of course, I found this out after spending 2.5 straight hours on the underground, which only led to one gigantic headache. Which brings me to another note. It appears that Tylonol and Advil are simply American brands that get people used to the idea of having a small bottle and 50 pills for whenever, whereas here it’s a tiny box of 16 pills, varying strengths, and different names. In a way, I think this might be better, since it ... read more
King's Cross and the Queen's Neighbour.
Published: February 1st 2009Europe » United Kingdom » England » Greater London » HolbornMaybe it’s because I’m not a Londoner, that I love London so. I grew up in Sussex just an hour away from the capital, but the journey on the train was always so expensive that the only opportunities I had to experience life in the big city were when my parents would take me to watch sport. My Dad and I used to lose our voices singing "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" at the Twickenham rugby 'Sevens' each spring, and bring fleeces and flasks to watch cricket at Lord's or the Oval every summer. My Mum took me to the Olympia horse show in the Christmas holidays. Until I was fifteen I must have thought that the city was just a collection of sports grounds. The real London is still a mystery to me. I look forward ... read more
Imagine This
Published: November 10th 2008Europe » United Kingdom » England » Greater London » HolbornI got tickets from the lady at work for Imagine This, a new London musical. Jessi, Alyse, Sabrina, and I met up after work on a Tuesday to see the play. It turned out to be the first night musical was open to the public, however, it was not the "opening night". We were literally 3 rows from the stage all the way to the left. The stage was a half circle sticking out into the audience so we could only see half of the backstage. That was my only complaint. Normally those seats are 60 pounds. The play was about a group of Jewish actors in the Warsaw ghetto in WWII. The story follows the miserable situation a group of actors are going through in the ghetto, and the way they use their acting to ... read more
A Morning at Sir John Soane's Museum
Published: October 30th 2008Europe » United Kingdom » England » Greater London » HolbornMy brother Paul and I had an early start to the day (early by holiday standards at least). We headed off across London Bridge at 9am with what seemed like a procession of thousands heading into the City. We were meeting Paul's P.A Denise, her husband Dave and her Aussie friend "Mouse". I will be first to admit I had no idea who John Soane was prior to my arrival in London this week. When my brother recommended a visit to the Museum I asked "Who is John Soane?" Having visited the Museum I now think that Soane (one of England's greatest architects) would have to be one of England's most interesting characters and prolific collectors of artefacts. This museum would be one of my favourite places in London to visit. The weather today was cold ... read more
