29 May 2008 Hi Folks ! Two shocks today - dry start and … late in the evening managed to get a broadband con while sitting in the tent. Mind I was in the tent because it was tipping it down !!!!!! Although today was dry until mid-evening the light was fairly poor with low cloud until after nine and thereafter a rather watery sky - v poor definition for photos. So, I did manage to find an attractive part of the FOD. The AONB (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) which is the finest part of the Forest effectively straddles the Wye valley so that it can be explored on both sides of the border. Headed for the extreme south west of the region and parked under the Severn Bridge just outside Chepstow and then followed ... read more

Wednesday 28 May Hi Folks ! Alarms rang out at 5.50 - as they always do. Listening to the patter of rain on the tent I decided to have a lie in ! Arose from slumber just after 7 washed and breakfasted (is there such a word ?) in dry if dull conditions - the Severn hidden in low cloud (or maybe pollution from those b…. towns ….). By shortly before nine the heavens had well and truly opened - birthday on Sunday - one request ……… some fine weather, please !. Steve ... read more

Hello again. Some of you may be confused by the title of this blog. Let me explain. Through this program, we get a chance to sign up for some activities that the program has found, and one of the events happened to be cheese rolling. At first I wasn't really sure if I wanted to go to it, but it was a Bank Holiday weekend and I thought, why not? So, the basic idea of Cheese Rolling is not what you would think right away. I thought they actually had giant Indiana Jones sized balls of cheese rolling down the hill. I was wrong. haha. Imagine throwing rocks down a hill and watching them tumble and fly down the hill....thats what cheese rolling looks like...but with PEOPLE. It is an eight pound round thing of cheese ... read more

Tuesday 27th May 2008 Hi Folks ! As I prepare to leave Ashleworth and head towards the FOD (Forest of Dean) the promised improvement in the weather seems a little optimistic. Last couple of days have been cold, wet and windy and this morning I had to decamp in the rain - which as those of you with experience of such joys will recall is not altogether pleasant. On the road by 9am and drove west through Glos towards FOD. On the way I diverted to some remote spots on the west bank of the Severn where life seems to have changed little in the past 100 years. Having decided to camp near a village called Goodrich just over the border into Herefordshire I decided to take in the eastern half of the FOD. Well ….. ... read more

Rain pounding down on the canvas - must be time for another blog ! Shook myself from a deep slumber to hear the promised rain lashing down so no need to rush around. As you can imagine the normal activities of the early morning human are relatively slow in a tent and even more so in the rain. Fortunately I had the foresight to bring swimming trunks and umbrella ! Breakfast was prepared inside the ten - which of course has large safety signs something to the effect of DO NOT COOK INSIDE TENT !!!!!! Seems to me the tent is unlikely to burst into flames in these conditions so with all sensible precautions breakfast was smoothly prepared and devoured - double helpings to lighten the gloom … I am camped for a few days on ... read more

17 May 2008 Anyways, onto the point of all this - investigating the delights of the British Isles. From Tetbury I am exploring the southern part of Glos. You will do doubt recall that Pr Charles lives down the road from here ….. sad to say that the town like Cirencester which I also visited in common with many places in the UK and I dare say elsewhere is spoilt by traffic passing through and cars parked anywhere and everywhere. Lechlade and Fairford were similarly affected by the dreaded car and Stroud was a great disappointment. The delightful Cotswold countryside made up for the spread of urbanisation and once away from the towns the villages are very quiet, very pretty and really you only have to drive a couple of miles to find yourself on a ... read more

16 May 2008 Hi Folks Ten days of fine weather has finally come to an end so I put together some highlights of the first days of this year’s journey. The first part of my itinerary for 2008 is Gloucestershire which as I am sure you are aware is one of the largest counties in England (look at the map !!) so will probably be here for some three weeks even with fine weather. First camp site was Tetbury Church Camp Site which was a tiny field between the church and the cottage to which said field belonged. This is was is known as a Certificated Site - that is to say it is inspected annually by the CACC (Camping and Caravanning Club) but does not have the facilities found on the main sites. So expect ... read more

15 May 2008 Hi Folks Listening to the rain pound down on the tent for a second successive day while putting on yet another layer of clothing is a reminder of the delights of camping in an English summer ! Fortunately it is a good tent and I am relatively snug although central heating would be welcome….. At least the rain drowns out the traffic noise - not a camp site I would recommend. The previous site was not brilliant - things can only improve …. unless they get worse !!!! There is of course always a silver lining. The occasional wet day allows me to catch up on admin - sorting out photos / notes / itineraries / backing up files / washing clothes …. The traffic noise on this site at least hides the ... read more

hello to good old wet and cold england!!! We're back safe and sound despite the weathers best attempts to stop us!!!! The bus journey back was not particularly eventful. Only a few stops by venezuelan guards and the colombian border check was straight forward!!! We had a day in Caracas sightseeing and experienced absolutley no problems whatsoever. We ventured on the subway and had a good old walk around! We met a 73 year old Japanese guy who answers to the name of Nobu and shared a taxi to the airport saving us all money and worked out really well. Turns out Nobu has already been travelling about 4 months and has been to South Africa, Europe, UK, Dallas, Miami and Central America. He was heading off to Peru, Chile and Argentina next!!! Go Nobu!!!!! Anyway, ... read more
