Over the course of our stay we have been reluctant to enter the orchard where the geese are, since on more than one occasion either AP or RM have legged it from the male goose! It is mating season so the male goose is pretty feisty in protecting its female and territory. Diana was bitten by, let’s call him Biff which left a nasty bruise so this was even more reason to keep out of his way. The geese and chicken are kept in the orchard - the geese eat the tall grasses and the chicken the grasses the shorter ones, keeping the grass short without having to mow it, and giving you lots of eggs in the process! Though when you approach the gate to the orchard the female geese mweh mwehs at the Biff ... read more

For anyone who doesn't know what Wwoofing is, it stands for World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms. Organic farmers advertise the opportunities on their farms, these can range from large farms to smallholdings. The organic produce can be a variety of things from meat, vegetables, fruit, dairy, nuts, wood. The organisation has been running since the 1970s. Growing organically means growing without using insecticides, herbicides and artificial fertilisers, which have been used in conventional farming since the second world war. These chemicals have a number of disadvantages - they are made from oil, (a finite resource), they are poisonous and unhealthy to the foods, they damage the creatures which make the soil and the plants and the ecosystems - earthworms, bees, fungi and so on, and they degrade the topsoil, which takes thousands of years to ... read more

The first journey After weeks of planning, packing, saying goodbyes, its Easter Sunday and we're leaving! The journey here took six hours from Billericay, Essex. It was a fair journey without hiccups, aside from a bit of bank holiday traffic on the M25. AP slept through most of it but suddenly awoke as we unexpectedly approached Stonehenge! We stopped there for our sandwiches and watched the ravens scavenge for some crumbs. We didn't go in; there were plenty of tourists visiting the ancient monument already, so it was onwards to Ceridwen! RM continued the drive and we had Daniel B's CD playing, thanks DB. We arrived late about 19:30 and Rob welcomed us with Diana at the doorstep offering us cups of tea. It was a warm welcome. PYWORTHY Pyworthy is a small village, quaint and ... read more

First of all thanks to ALL of you (well 2 of you actually - Dick and Sandie from Canada!!!) who vocally and insistently demanded the return of the Hoggtrotters Blog!! OK - I am persuaded!! I know I didn't quite get around to finishing the last blog - Cook Islands and California are still missing - but I may complete these once Janie and I are underway on The Hoggtrotters, Chapter 2 - Trot On ...!!! Must admit I feel quite frisky since consuming that Findus Lasagne!! It's been an interesting and nerve wracking last few days to say the least!! We were due to leave dear old 'Blighty' last Tuesday heading for Ho Chi Minh City and the Tet (New Year's Celebrations). Unfortunately, 24 hours before our departure Janie exclaimed 'Aggh!' The 'Aggh' quickly developed ... read more

Well this was probably the worst time of my life so far, unfortunately my marriage was no longer working and I had feelings for someone else. Not much about travel in here but after 16 years of marriage it had to end and I called my mum, not what I expected to do or happen after so many years, the tears rolled down my face as I said goodbye to the kids and got into my mothers car to return to Bristol.... read more

Life in Devon. Moving to Ilfracombe in the heart of North Devon was a great experience for the family and myself. Fresh start new schools, new opportunities and the sea air. I managed to land a job on the high street within a couple of days and we settled into the seaside lifestyle. It is surprising where the time goes; I learned to scuba dive with the local dive club, my work life changed dramatically by the seaside everything is seasonal. I began working in a local zoo, first as a technical engineer and then onto full time maintenance, five years later I was still there.... read more

So while we were in Totnes planning the first part of our trip, packing up our house and converting our van(see pictures!) I was thinking about films and books that have inspired me to travel. So in no particular order my top films: The Motor Cycle Diaries (South America), Lost in Translation (Tokyo - Japan), Hideous Kinky (Morocco), Before Sunrise (Vienna – Austria) and Stealing Beauty (Tuscany- Italy). And my books are: My Family and Other Animals (Corfu), A Room With a View (Florence – Italy), Eat, Pray, Love (Italy, India & Bali), The Beach (Thailand) and Round Ireland with a Fridge (Ireland). What films and books make you want to visit somewhere else?... read more

Hola!!
