Background: Great Britain, the dominant industrial and maritime power of the 19th century, played a leading role in developing parliamentary democracy and in advancing literature and science. At its zenith, the British Empire stretched over one-fourth of the earth's surface. The first half of the 20th century saw the UK's strength seriously depleted in two World Wars. The second half witnessed the dismantling of the Empire and the UK rebuilding itself into a modern and prosperous European nation. As one of five permanent members of the UN Security Council, a founding member of NATO, and of the Commonwealth, the UK pursues a global approach to foreign policy; it currently is weighing the degree of its integration with continental Europe. A member of the EU, it chose to remain outside the Economic and Monetary Union for the time being. Constitutional reform is also a significant issue in the UK. The Scottish Parliament, the National Assembly for Wales, and the Northern Ireland Assembly were established in 1999, but the latter is suspended due to bickering over the peace process.

Road Trip

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Devon » Torquay
As it was my birthday last week, we thought we'd have a little trip away. I've been wanting to visit the Cornwall/Devon area and it's been years since mum has been there, so we decided to hire a car and hit the road. 06/05/08 We left first thing on Tuesday morning and headed towards Plymouth. But as ws we got closer and looked at the map, we realised Torquay was on the way so we decided that would be our first stop. We had already been driving for the best part of the day so by 4pm we were ready to [View Full Entry]

After Exeter, we wandered down to the coast to a town called Torquay, which is on Torbay. This area is known as the English Riveria, but having never seen the real (French) Riveria, I just have to take their word for it. In any case, the drive was beautiful, going up and down hills and through cutesy little towns, with peeks of the sea every so often. The only things open at this point were touristy souvenir shops and restaurants, but the bay was beautiful, filled with sailboats in the evening light. I also had the one moment that reminded me [View Full Entry]

Well everyone easter weekend has passed and Kevin and I went exploring Torquay (Devon). After 8 months of living in the Midlands and not seeing the sea I was missing it terribly and what a fantastic time we had. It was beautiful! the weather was stunning our hotel was over looking the sea and only metres away from the town centre, what more could you ask for? We travelled down on the Friday night arriving late as Kevin had to work most of the day, luckily the traffic wasn't too hectic. Our hotel was on a steep hill right on [View Full Entry]

No, I have not gone home just yet, simply visited the Devon version of my home town. This blog is basically for my parents and friends who grew up in Torquay so I apologise to the rest of you for the many local references that you may not fully appreciate. Torquay is part of the area known locally as the "British Riviera". Well, having not been to the French version, I cannot comment on the accuracy of this claim but I think it may be a stretch. The town itself reminded me more of an even further commercialised version of Lorne [View Full Entry]
