Bikers on the Road

Nelly & John

The purpose of this blog is to record our holiday biking trips in UK and abroad.
As of March 2011 we have a new bike. It's a Suzuki Bandit S 1250cc, grey/bronze. It is still 'Suzie' to us.

Our previous bike was a Suzuki V-Strom 1000cc, black/silver, model: DL1000K8GT bought in March 2009. We baptised it 'Suzie'.

Ce blog est un moyen de noter nos sorties en moto au Royaume-Uni et a l'etranger.

IN ENGLISH London to Great Yarmouth, 19-21 April 2014: 136 miles one way Taking advantage of the three-day bank holiday weekend at Easter we decided to take a trip north to the East Norfolk Coast. We left home on Saturday morning. Base camp was going to be in Great Yarmouth. The area is the base for exploring the Norfolk Broads, so after settling in the hotel, we got on a walking trail to Burg Castle. In the evening we went out to the seafront of Great Yarmouth: typical family British seaside holiday town with its horse carriage, arcade, sweet shops, fun fare & tourist train. Sunday we took the local bus to Winterton-on-Sea /... read more

IN ENGLISH London to Merthyr Tydfil, Wales: 179 miles each way - 23 - 26 August 2013 Three days off over the August Bank Holiday weekend, we arranged to go to the Brecon Beacons National Park in South Wales famous for its country side roads, valleys and walking treks. We left London after work on Friday at about 5pm and stopped over en route in Chipping Sodbury (close to Bristol) where we arrived at 8pm. John had booked a night at the Cross Hands. The story goes that in the 70s Her Majesty the Queen took refuge here from a bad snowstorm. Saturday we left mid morning and arrived at Merthyr Tydfil early afternoon. Our r... read more

IN ENGLISH London to Cheddar, Somerset, UK: 143 miles one way - 6 - 7 July 2013 I had heard before that Cheddar Gorge provides an interesting winding road for riders to enjoy. Natuarally, we took the trip on two bikes so I can practice the bends too. The journey to Cheddar was uneventful. John had booked in advance a hotel in the town centre for one night. We arrived mid afternoon, and after settling in the room, we lazied around by the swimming pool until dinner time. It proved difficult to find a decent restaurant in the village, the most attractive one being unfortunately fully booked that evening. We ended up at a pizzeria; not very nice and most disappointing. The next day, on Sunday, in the morning we followed a url=http://www.cheddargorge.co.... read more

IN ENGLISH Peckham, south east London to North Circular Road Stonebridge, north west London - 2 June 2013 We heard of a meeting at the famous Ace Cafe in support of SERV. The Cafe is well known to bikers and regularly organises events, meetings and gigs thoughout the year. SERV - aka Blood Runners - is the charity that John is a member of. Its purpose is to transport blood samples between hospitals at night and weekends in South London and Sussex. Thanks to the volunteering work of the SERV riders, the NHS saves lots of money in delivering urgent blood products. We had brunch at the Ace Cafe, looked out the other bikes - some vintage and collectors -, chatted to the SERV members and chilled out in the sunshine. A lovely spent Sunday morning ... read more

IN ENGLISH Peckham to Whitstable, UK: 118 miles round trip - 6 May 2013 I (Nelly) had bought a new motorbike a week ago. A Honda CBF 500cc red. Naturally, on this beautiful sunny bank holiday Monday, it felt appropriate to ride out to the seaside for a proper test of my new bike. We chose to go to Whitstable as a close enough destination, and because we had never been there before. We mostly took the A2 road to the south east coast of England. We encountered quite a bit of traffic that slowed us down, but the ride was very enjoyable after all. One (sort of) panic moment when we stopped for a coffee late morning and my bike wouldn't start again! John checked it around, and it seemed to be a problem with ... read more

IN ENGLISH London to Inverness, UK: 1277.4 miles round trip 26 May - 3 June 2012 Day 1: Saturday 26 May We left home at 06:30am heading to North London and picked up the M1 and M6. We saw lots of bikers on the motorway having realised afterwards that the TT race on the Isle of Man was on and therefore many bikers were travelling north to the island. We met and chatted to French bikers from Lyon and Chambery (it's a small world), and were stranded on the M6 for 45 minutes due to an accident behind a group of Hell's Angels. Riding in hot weather was hard and motorway conditions a bit boring. After crossing the Border, we stopped for the day in Gretna, first town in Scotland. We arrived at 4pm and stayed ... read more

IN ENGLISH London to Torquay, Devon, UK: 219.4 miles on the way out & 197.4 miles on the way back 6-9 April 2012 As I (Nelly) wanted to gain more riding experience, we decided to travel on two bikes for this long bank holiday weekend. The first leg of the journey was going to be on the M4 west to Bristol and then on the M5 south to Exeter + a bit of A roads to Torquay our final destination. All went well, despite tiredness and feeling achy; we stop several times to rest and arrived in Torquay at 6pm. We had made a reservation at the Robin Hill B&B which turned out to be a lovely place. One small inconvenient: the driveway to the hotel entrance goes up on a steep hill and John had ... read more

IN ENGLISH London to Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, UK: 108.1 miles one way 9-10 July 2011 We had booked John's aerobatic flight Red Letter Day experience for that weekend (Christmas present from Nelly). The flight was on Sunday morning. We left home Saturday morning heading to North London and Oxford and the A40 to Cheltenham. Lunch was spent on the motorway. The weather was very variable with heavy showers, overcast skies and sunny outbreaks. We started thinking that the flight experience might be cancelled due to too much wind and clounds. In Cheltenham, we stayed at the White Lodge b&b not far from the air field. We rested in the bedroom for the rest of the afternoon, and for dinner walked to the town center for a Thai meal. Sunday morning after breakfast, we checked out and rode ... read more

IN ENGLISH London to Weymouth, Dorset, UK: 138.7 miles one way 30 April-1 May 2011 On this bank holiday weekend, we decided to ride to the seaside town of Weymouth, just to see what it's like. We left Peckham on Saturday morning in nice weather. No incident on the journey, with a stop on the motorway for breakfast (as usually). Shortly before arriving in Weymouth, we spotted the famous Dorset landmark of the White Horse on the hills of Osmington. In Weymouth we found a guest house near the harbour called Whadham House that was comfortable and quiet. After changing clothes, we set out to visit the waterfront of Weymouth. We walked along the busy beach and finished the afternoon with a drink by the ha... read more

IN ENGLISHLondon, UK: from purchase to taking new Suzie homeSadly early this year, we had a minor road accident while out on a Sunday afternoon to Richemond Park. While stationary at a traffic light behind a queue of cars, a woman car driver behind did not stop in time and slammed into the back of the Suzuki V-Strom. John was on his own at the time; I was riding my Yamaha and was waiting next to him. John and the Suzuki fell on the side. Luckily no major physical injuries, and the bike though quite damaged, did start again and John rode it back home. But this is how far as it went. After investigation from the insurance company, our original Suzie was written off. R.I.P girl. Immediately after the accident we were given a complimentary ... read more
