Time has been creeping stealth-like onwards and suddenly it's only ten days until my departure to India. Today I received the final itinerary for the trip, and I have to say it looks rather exciting! The trip is to be split into two groups and I'll be in the group travelling East from Delhi to Bhubaneshwar. Here's a summary of what I'll be doing: 24 Feb - Depart London Heathrow 25 Feb - Arrive in Delhi, briefings with WaterAid staff in India 26 Feb - Fly to Bhubaneshwar, briefings with regional WaterAid staff 27 Feb - A day in the life of a rural community in India - visiting a village near Puri of 273 people all of whom are below the poverty line. Sanitation coverage is nil. 28 Feb - Visit to a village where ... read more

I have now finally finished the thorough course of vaccinations required for my trip. Once the number of needles going into my arms hit double figures, I stopped counting. The cholera one was, bizarrely, a fizzy strawberry / cleaning chemical flavoured drink, in two doses. I am glad to say I am now protected against Hepatitis A, Typhoid, Polio, Tetanus, Diptheria, Tuberculosis, Rabies (sort of), Japanese B Encephalitis, Hepatitis B and Meningitis (strains A, C, W & Y). A course of endless tablets (two per day of one sort and two per week of another sort, from one week before departure until four weeks after return) will keep Malaria at bay too, although I'm hoping that the industrial strength insect repellent and the wedge-shaped mosquito net will help in that regard too. The pills make me ... read more

Well it's almost here, i fly tomorrow at 9.45pm, and it is finally starting to feel real! I have done most of the things on my list now - just the small matter of taxing my car (did anyone else know you can do it online now - how handy is that for disorganised night owls like me!), and also the fact that my car insurance runs out in January... hoping a call to good old Steve at Stuart and Co tomorrow will knock that one off the list in advance?? And then there is the slightly pressing matter of packing.... i have done extremely well with the amount of items i have crammed into my back pack. According to a well meaning friend, all i pretty much need is a bikini, a t shirt, a ... read more

well things are moving in the right direction now, Im pleased to say! No longer two steps forward and 300 back. More like 2 steps forward 1 back. Following yer dream can seem like megga hard work, but blimmin well worth it. I recently had the dreaded jabs and for those who know me, I didnt faint!!!!!!!!! I was a brave old cooky with a dead arm for the day. Not many days left at work now and ive noticed that my motivation is beginning to drift elsewhere....... I catch myself day dreaming about far away places, golden sunsets in India, crystal clear waters in Thailand. It seems to have become my past time hobby of late. The house doesnt feel like my home anymore as my belongins are being spread around the country, till we ... read more

Peterborough & The Peak District (23rd October - 1st December 2006) London (13th-22nd October) It was great to spend 3 weeks in Melbourne catching up with family and friends but it was time for me to head back to London on the 12th of October to start working and travelling again. Such a terribly hard life! I didn’t seem to be able to get a locum position while I was still in Melbourne and it was that fraction easier being over here. I also had an interview on the 16th of October for a chalet hosting position in France over the ski season. I was offered the job and will be working in a chalet down the road from Bern and Elizabeth starting on the 4th of December. A guaranteed white Christmas! It was difficult to ... read more

Well we have arrived safe and sound in UK and manged to make our way to Whittlesey without incident. For those of you who haven't visited, Whittlesey is a lot like spending time at Barrington Mall ie. the average age is about 76 and there seems to be more 'Mobility Scooters' than pensioners to ride them. On arrival we were promptly collected by cousin Martin and taken out for dinner ( to the finest pub in all of Whittlesey - it really was a bit like Eastenders) and then on to watch a 'first rate' game of football and once more the willies came out to greet us......apparently joining the Army requires you being stripped naked in mid pitch - we were also thrilled to be included in the actual game by fielding any out of ... read more

Hey everyone, Sorry it's been so long since we posted - we have a terrible time giving up time for internet instead of touring.....so here goes. We've been through Rome. It was hot, busy, and hard for us to get around. Brenda and Kaela really appreciated the sun. However, the sun didn't settle too well on Kaela - she apparently got some skin sensitivity from her meds and got severely burned on her hands and nose. We ended up going to a hopital in Rome where she got treated with an IV and some gellatto. Of course this cut into our tour time but we still made it to the Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, the Colloseum, Palatine Hill, and the Vatican. We had one interesting evening trying to get back to our hotel after touring around town. ... read more
