This is it. Three hours until I'm off to London Heathrow Airport and on my way to Nairobi, Kenya. WOW!! My time in England has flown by and I can't believe its time for the next stage of my gap year! I've had a wonderful stay here and was able to see all of my family! This past weekend I took a train from Reading to London and then to Manchester to visit my cousin Alex at University. So much fun. We went clubbing with 3 of his house mates and I had a amazing time! It's much different then Toronto.. the atmosphere, music, dancing... everything! After staying at Alex's for 2 nights I took another train to my aunt and uncle's new farm house in the beautiful English countryside. The next day I returned to ... read more

So, this past Monday I wasn't feeling great, so I decided to work from home. Mondays are the day that my flat is cleaned, so when someone knocked on my door a little after 1:00, I assumed it was the cleaning crew. However, when I opened the door, I found 2 older men standing there (which was surprising since you have to have a key to get into the building or be buzzed in by someone). Anyone, one of them says, "we have good news for you". Okkaaayyy.....then he says, "we've brought you a new sofa". Well, I'm looking out in the hall and don't see a sofa. So, I finally ask who they are! Apparently, they are the owners of my building. They used to run it on a day-to-day basis, but didn't have the ... read more

This past weekend, we decided to take it a bit easier with regards to sightseeing. My sister had a couple of papers due early this week, so she wanted to be able to do some homework. Saturday we went to the grocery store. Okay, that's not sightseeing, but it was a good accomplishment for us! Later that day, we went to Basildon Park House. It's just outside of Reading, so it was easy to get to. Very beautiful place. Unfortunately, there is scaffolding all around the exterior because they are cleaning the stonework. We were disappointed. This house was also used to film some of the 2005 version of Pride & Prejudice. For those of you who know me well, I prefer the BBC version with Colin Firth. But it was cool to see this. Karen ... read more

I have decided that one of the best things about being in England right now is the close proximity of my brother and his family. I have been able to spend the day with them each of the two weekends that I have been here. It has been wonderful! I am only an hour away by car. I have never lived this closely to them, even in the USA. This past weekend, I was able to help them just after they moved. They had done a great job of settling into the new place in only 24 hours. But I got to watch the boys for awhile as they continued to unpack and I also helped my brother clean the old place. I look forward to more time with them during my time here. As an ... read more

This morning, I decided to not use the GPS to get to work. I was fairly confident I could find my way even though I wasn't 100% sure about all of the roundabouts. However, I was able to make it without any incidents! Yeah! I told my manager that this morning and he asked if I had been adventurous enough to go a different route. Maybe next week. :-) I have to tell a story on myself. Last week, I had been pretty proud of myself since I had managed to get into the car on the correct side each and every time. Well, that came to an abrupt halt on Friday. I went to the grocery store after work on Friday (not a good idea, by the way, too crowded). By the time I walked ... read more

Here are the promised pictures of my flat! Today, I also learned how to use the washer/dryer combo as well as the oven. I also picked up a few things for the flat, like a clothes hamper and some hooks to hang things on in the bathroom. Not a very exciting day, but a necessary one. Tomorrow I am heading to London to spend the day with my brother and his family.... read more

Well, I have started this blog to be able to share details about my time in the UK. My company has sent me here for about 6 months to work on a couple of projects. I am really excited about this since I have family nearby. I will be living in Reading, Berkshire and working in Bracknell, Berkshire. So, I left the USA on Sunday evening. The flight was good and we even got in a little bit early. I got through immigration without too many problems and all of my bags arrived. My driver was waiting for me and he brought me to my flat. It is really nice. It's a one bedroom flat and is fully furnished. I plan to post some pictures later this week. I walked over to a grocery store to ... read more

What. A. Week. I don't really know how to begin to be honest. I feel as if so much has changed. So much has changed around me, where i've been, where i've been going. And so much has changed within me as well. The way i've felt about things, what i've wanted. So much. I'll try and tell it as it happened. There's no way to write this without sounding pretentious, but I felt as if Jen and I had discovered ultimate freedom. I felt as if our lives no longer knew any bounds; we could go anywhere, we could do anything. We were talking about Turkey, Norway, Spain, Poland, and beyond. I was begin to wonder where we might stop, with all of this freedom and all of this time and all of this huge ... read more
