When you enter a new blog on this website, you can choose from a list of locations for the entry. It starts with a general region such as Europe. Then you pick a country, and after that a city, zone, etc...For this entry, I got as for as Ukraine. The nearest city in the drop down list was approximately 400 km away from where I was. This was about the millionth sign that I will probably never find Felsoszinever (pronounced Fell-show-see-never) on a map sold anywhere in the Western world. Nor will I ever probably find Uzhgorod or Mukachevo, other towns I visited close to the Hungarian border. Nonetheless I was there, and these pictures prove it. Most of you that are reading this probably received my long winded email on my trip to Ukraine, so ... read more

This is a long entry, with 34 photos! First I'll write about my last 3 days in Croatia: I spent the Sunday afternoon at Polari camping around the pool because I was invited by the animators, and also monday evening when they had live music there. I hung around and had some drinks together with Andrea, Tonka, Mario, Zdravko and Zeljko. Later I went again to Monvi with Mario and two of his friends. Tuesday we left Croatia by bus, drove through Slovenia, Austria and Germany...and 24 hours later I was home. That day my school called me and said that they've found a new teacher so I don't have do postpone my trip to Ukraine. I took off to Ukraine two days later. Sendly had to play in Donetsk, so his ... read more

I shook my head in barely hidden frustration as another bulging Ukrainian oaf barged in front of me and slapped his wad of Hryvnia on the bus ticket counter. I'm a well tempered professional Englishman, proud of my queue skills and patience, but this was barbarism! I had arrived at the train station without a shred of Lviv knowledge, just the way I like it. I must have looked a little flustered because a woman tapped me on the shoulder and said she spoke English. Behind her, a gaggle of old Ukrainian women glowered at me, wondering why on earth their leader had engaged me in conversation. I explained my predicament. The woman looked non-plussed till I mentioned that my mother had been from the Ukraine (well, no need to give the full story... nevertheless my ... read more

All Apologies... This is more or less my first travel blog (aka WeB Log) entry for my Wild On Middle East Trip. I'm writing this blog before I actually reach my first stop--Kiev, Ukraine. If there's one thing I remember from college--Ukrainians ARE NOT Russians (SEE Russification). I'll make my point in the next blog. I only have an hour and a half layover in Kiev before I jump on the plane to Tel Aviv; hence there's much in the way of details yet. So by now you might be asking yourself 'What's the point?' or 'Why did Tim even send an email to me to read his Travel Blog?' To be honest I just wanted to get my first entry uploaded and see if my profile is working (most comments welcome). I will add to ... read more

9/02 2002 was the first summer since 1997 that I hadn't spent in Europe because I left England in May to go back to the USA. This was very depressing for me, so I decided to let fate decide on whether or not I would return to Europe in the fall. Newcastle's group stage draw for the Champions' League was held in August. I decided that if they drew a Ukrainian or Russian team, I would go. Fate told me loudly to return to Europe when Newcastle drew Dinamo Kiev and then laughed at me by making Newcastle's match at Dinamo the first fixture. Bascially, I had to go in two weeks. I bought my plane ticket to Kiev and mailed my passport to the Ukrainian Embassy for my visa on the same day the draw ... read more
