Ana never tells me her plans, especially when she moves from place to place. I suppose it's due to Ukraine's unpredictable nature, and people's unwillingness to 'count their chickens before they hatch'. While she was working in America last summer I got a message saying "Hi from Broadway!" when I thought she was in Philadelphia, and she appeared in Kyiv this autumn when I thought she had University coursework due in Lugansk. So when I learned that I had been offered this interview in Ukraine I was tempted not to let her know my own plans until I had arrived from London; "Surprise! Meet me on the balcony in Maidan Nezalezhnosti at 7!", my sms would have said... In the end I lost my nerve and told her five days before. It's just as well, as ... read more

All plans of getting up early were lost when we slept through our alarm. We are lucky that everything here is open later so it doesn't matter too much if we do sleep in. We finally got up when we got a call from Tour Chernobyl confirming our trip. We made sandwiches out of the bread and cheese we bought yesterday. Rob moaned about me putting the bread in the fridge, but it is so cold in the room that it hardly mattered anyway. We had a bit of a run in with a surly cleaner who tried to imply that we had stolen/misplaced a set of towels. We set off to look around some shops, but quickly realised that shopping would be pointless. Shops here are ALL either designer labels, or selling designer labels. Every ... read more

We fancied breakfast today, so we nipped two doors up the road and bought Danish pastries, juice and yoghurt. In our hotel room we have a fridge that we thought we'd take advantage of, so we bought bread cheese etc which looks slightly better than what was in before, vodka. Believing that Sundays here would be much similar to England we decided to see the sights of the city as attractions, museums, shops etc would be closed. After consulting the oracle that is Lonely Planet, we decided to head towards the history of Ukraine museum. On our way we kind of stumbled upon St Sophia's Cathedral which was named after the Hagia Sofia in Istanbul. It is Kiev's oldest standing church built from 1017. You did have to pay to go in, but the entrance and ... read more

The night train from Lviv to Kiev is not exactly the most relaxing form of transport, but is definitely an experience. We arrived safe and sound in Kiev at half seven and found that the toilets were shut for another half an hour. We then discovered that the left luggage lockers were too small for our backpacks. So with full bladders and our bags on our backs, we headed into a city we had no map of to try and find somewhere to stay. We began our trek in the wrong direction from the train station and only began to walk in the right direction when a kindly policeman took us the twenty minute walk back the way we had just come back onto the right road. We may have been able to take the metro, ... read more

Our first official "sightseeing" day came on our third day in Lviv. Lonely Planet had a walking tour of the city, so we decided to do that. We visited many churches/cathedrals but some in particular stood out. The roman catholic cathedral was our first stop. It was quite impressive from the outside as it occupied the best part of Ploscha Katedralna. Inside was more like an art gallery than a cathedral. The stations of the cross were painted on every available wall and pillar. The whole ceiling of the cathedral had renaissance muriels covering every space. The next church worth mentioning is the Dominican church which was so grand and immense inside that it really didn't feel like a church. There was gold leaf decoration everywhere and so much detail in every tiny muriel, window or ... read more

Anyone arriving in Ukraine this evening with preconceptions about what being in Eastern Europe feels like would have had each of them confirmed during their drive to the centre alone. Low, dark grey clouds lashed rain onto the windscreen of my dilapidated taxi, its windscreen wipers creaked in time with the soft folk music playing on the radio, dirty blocks of flats flanked both sides of the motorway, and the only specks of colour to be found in the dismal outskirts of Kyiv came from hundreds of billboards, advertising everything from cigarettes to the upcoming elections. My driver was good value, as they always seem to be here. He gave me a cheerful rant about the congestion during the evening rush hour and the poor state of the countries' roads, and in spite of them both ... read more

It was around eleven when we woke up. We ate breakfast but it turned out to be a mistake for Rob who was ill straight after. After sitting a while till Rob felt better, we headed out to the ticket office to enquire about tickets to Kiev. It turned out that Rob wasn't feeling better, so we headed back to the hostel. There we clambered into bed and Rob spent a good few hours sleeping off the hangover whilst I dozed and updated diary entries. When we were both up we went through to the kitchen to eat Something. There were quite a few people in there with whom we chatted to for a few hours. The owner of the hostel and a few others are used to drinking copious amounts of vodka so they found ... read more

We woke up at about 10 o'clock which is after the time water is available in central Lviv (only water is 6-9 morning and evening). Fortunately the hostel has a storage tank so toilets can still be flushed. I enjoyed my free breakfast which consisted of some interesting cereal and banana which wasn't quite like western cereal but was greatly appreciated all the same. From the hostel we headed off to find a book shop for a dictionary as we are completely lost without one; as one sign in ukrainian looks much like another. This then means we can't eat or function. So anyhow, we found a small bookshop but were followed round by a creepy security person. In there there were numerous phrase books but no dictionaries. We then went for a wander; round here ... read more

Today we had breakfast with Regan who lent us his book on the Ukraine. I made a few notes on accommodation and tour guides etc. We ran out to the supermarket and bought some food for the train journey. (namely bread, cheese and fruit) We settled the bill with the hostel which was cheaper than we thought which is always a good thing. We walked to the train station avoiding every bit of sun possible. I now know where the British summer sun went, it's here at the end of September. The train was alright in that we got a seat, but it was too hot in the compartments. For the last part of the journey in Poland we stood with our heads sticking out of the windows, it was very refreshing. The train terminated in ... read more

brekky at 8 am before we left on our english speaking guided tour. We went all over the place and the old duck that was our guide was a wealth of information. She was great, but at times it was difficult to take it all in as she never slowed down to take a breath!!! i will make sure all these pictures eventually make it on here. WWII museum, another heap of churches and local sights, a trip to one of their fast food restaurants, which is far superior to anything ive experienced in oz, usa or finland. its decent food thats made in small amounts so its always fresh when it hits your plate.
