At last blue sky so up for the day at the glacier.. suspension bridge funicular and lake hike. Set off at 10am need to get supplies in for weekend due to shops shutting at 5 and no sundays however as we only have a cool bag we decide to deal with it later - lous salmonella fear leading the way with this decision - I can see where this will head when day was meant to be 9-6! Arrived at glacier in brilliant sunshine and walked down and inside the glacier views amazing . Best quote from lou look at that it looks like sheets over the ice - thats because it is sheets covering the ice ! Over the ice grotto part to stop it melting too quick ( moves 10cm a day ). The internet connection at the campsite has been pretty bad the last couple of days and we couldn’t get on at all. We finally sorted it out this morning as we have no accommodation booked for tomorrow night yet! While mum searched out the next few days’ lodgings, Em had the whole morning to play in the playground. We even got to watch them fill up the kids’ swimming pool but it was still too cold for swimming in our book! After lunch we took a trip to the nearby town of Sion. We are on the border of the French and German speaking areas here and as you go through one of the mountain tunnels, the signs change from German to French which is quite a shift when looking for the motorway exit – Ausfarht ... read more

Our plan for the day was to go to the Matterhorn… what we learnt is that Switzerland is the most expensive place on earth! It is really a magical mountain paradise as long as you don’t think about how much it costs for everything. Fuel is about $3 per litre, eating out is almost criminally expensive and if you get into the tourist areas, prepare for a thorough fleecing! Anyway… To get to the Matterhorn from our campsite, we drove about an hour to Tasch. This was a pretty cool drive through the mountains in some spectacular scenery. It is a fairly steady uphill to Tasch at about 1450m high. From there you park ($17) and take the shuttle train ($20 each) to Zermatt at about 1620m which is car-free. Zermatt is a beautiful alpine resort ... read more

Our campsite is in a national park area so today we thought we would go explore it a bit. Some strenuous walking brought us up the hill to the Bhutanese bridge. This suspension bridge is reminiscent of the type of bridges you see in the Himalayas, just a couple of stretched wires and a timber deck looping across an enormous gaping chasm. There is even a Buddhist shrine at one end and prayer flags tied along the sides of the bridge. It is quite an impressive view and the bridge moves considerably while you walk across. On the other side is a forest area with some little timber huts, not much bigger than kennels, built by people for shelter during winter. Covered in snow they would be quite cosy and windproof, just big enough to lay ... read more

The second leg of our drive to Switzerland saw us heading ever upward into the mountains. Our first stop for the day was still in Italy – Arona on the edge of the largest lake in Italy. It has a hilltop park with the ruins of a medieval village at the top and the views are spectacular. We spent about an hour wandering around and playing in the playground before getting back into the car for the rest of the journey. Switzerland has a system of toll roads using a vignette or sticker on the window but there is no short term alternative like in Austria. Whether you use the highways for 2 minutes or 12 months, the cost is the same – about $50 aussie! After a bit of thinking, we figured it was best ... read more
