Switzerland was a lot less snowy the second time around. Our favorite hikes were open, the weather was fabulous, and our trip to the Jungfraujoch, for our 27th anniversary celebration, was the best. We had a lovely, clear day with miles and miles of visibility. The temperature was so pleasant that we spent a half hour sledding in the snow play area high on the top of the Jungfrau. We haven't been on sleds since we were kids. It was a blast, even when we wiped out and tumbled from the sled. We had a great week hiking and seeing friends in Interlaken before continuing on to Corsica. After our not so great week in Corsica, we flew to Chamonix, France for more fun in the high Alps. The Montenvers cogwheel train transported us to the ... read more

After breakfast and packing the van we headed down to Dani and Jonas' to say goodbye to everbody. Lots of hugs later we were on our way with a quick stop at a shopping centre where we were able to buy steins and Raechel got some cheap shoes. Our 250 km drive to Interlaken in Switzerland took us all day. The first part of the day the traffic was very heavy but the scenery along the lake was lovely. Stopped at a Basilica on the side of the road and had a look inside, it was very ornate. Also bought some fresh raspberries and cherries to have for lunch and pressed on. Crossed into Switzerland and stopped in Luzern for lunch. Very picturesque but very hot! And when we got back to the van we had ... read more

Sorry about the videos in the last blog. For those of you that are interested, the problem has been fixed and the videos are now there. I felt this was the easiest way to let you know I figured out how to do it. We arrived in Lesbos (aka Lesvos) last night. We're toured the town, visited the archaeological museum, and climbed up to the castle. Tomorrow, we are renting a car and touring the island. Then, on Saturday, we're off to Chios on the ferry. Looking forward to our first dinner of Greek food tonight.... read more

We've spent the past week on the high peaks enjoying the sun and the snow. Even though some of the trails were closed, the weather was warm and the views were spectacular. I decided to play around with the video feature on my camera and show off the sights. However, I've just discovered that that feature of Travelblog is currently disabled. They are sending me to YouTube. There will be links at the bottom of this text directing you to the videos. The videos are short and not the best, but they were fun to do. Hope it works! If not you should be able to find them under the following tag: Pam and Ron in Switzerland. I also got into the wildflowers and had to add some of those too. Forgive me for getting a ... read more

It was rainy for the entire month of May in Switzerland, so we really couldn't complain about the 2 days of bad weather when we arrived. By the third day, the rain stopped, the sun came out, the sky turned blue, and the weather turned gorgeous. All that rain translates into snow in the mountains and we saw the most snow that we have ever seen in June. The locals were telling us that it is the most snow they have seen in 30 years. Our favorite trails were closed, but the restaurants were open and the view points at the top of the lift stations provided some spectacular views of the snowy peaks. We enjoyed the views, the great hot chocolate, the lack of tourists, and had some great wildlife sightings. The best was the ... read more

As I sit in the best room we've had so far, listening to the outdoor concert for New Years Day and waiting for fireworks that I'll be able to see from the balcony, I think back over the last 3 days in Interlaken. Getting to Interlaken, although long, had to be one of the best train trips we've had so far. 2 legs, 2 compartments that we had to ourselves, definately the way to travel. We walked the 900m to our hotel, dumped our bags and headed out exploring. Walking down the main street, you can see the Alps to your left and your right, it is stunning. Interlaken itself is not very big but a great spot for exploring the Alps. We bought a 3day Ski-Pass. With this we could catch as many trains and ... read more

Today we decided to go to Interlaken and keep the hiking low key. We took the train via Murren-Grutschalp-Lauterbrunnen-Interlaken Ost. We walked along "fancy hotel" row, saw a couple of tandem flyers land, had McDonalds and the took the boat cruise (1st class) on Lake Thun to Spiez. The 1st class only lasted for 1/2 the cruise though. We didn't realize that we were sitting in first class until the ticket holder agent came by to check and told us that we were in the 1st class section. O well, it was unintendedly nice while it lasted. On the boat cruise (which was very slow) we stopped by Neuhaus, Beatushohlen-Sundlauenen, Beatenbucht, Merligen, Faulensee and finally Speiz. We didn't stop anywhere except Spiez. We were told that if we were to stay on the boat and go ... read more

After the Poi retreat was over we said our good bies and hopped on a train to Interlaken. We ended up staying at a pretty nice hostel close to the main train station so it wasn't too much of a hassle to find the place. After we dropped off our bags we went exploring down all the back streets for some good local food. What we found was and still is the best pizza I have ever had. It was incredibly flavorful, unlike anything in the states I've had so far. Perhaps when I make it to Italy some day I may change my mind but that's my story and i'm sticking to it for now. The view of the mountians in Interlaken was surreal, it felt like being on a movie set or something. There ... read more

After the Olympics, it was on to Interlaken, Switzerland. For our 9 days there we were keeping life simple: eat, sleep, hike. That's what we did and I bought the T-shirt to prove it. We are now on the island of Sifnos in the Cyclades Islands of Greece. It's one of my favorites and still as charming as we remembered. Happy hiking, RPM... read more
