We have arrived in Interlaken by car. This is a cute town with a river running through it. It has a huge green field in the center of town. It is located between two lakes Lake Thun and Lake Brienz. It is surrounded by mountains, forests, meadows and glaciers. We are staying in an Airbnb rental, a 117 year old home owned by a young couple. They are renovating the house and it is very plain inside but has a great location near the center of town. In Interlaken everyone speaks German so we change to guten Morgen (good morning) and danke (thank you). Our main reason for coming here is to hike, the weather report is not looking good but in the morning there is a change and we head offf to Grindelwald. If you ... read more

Our ride up on a gondola

This morning I experienced the Swiss Alps. I rode the gondola to the top of the Schilthorn peak. It takes about half an hour to get there. At the top there is a revolving restaurant, a gift shop, a James Bond display, and sublime views of the mountains (see first two photos). It was not particularly cold despite the elevation of 9,744 ft. (Timberline Lodge is 5,960 ft.) I loved the views of mountains and valleys in every direction. I didn't spend much time in the restaurant, gift shop, or James Bond display. The reason for the latter is that "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" was partially filmed here. The rides up and down provided great views, too. I took a picture of the gondola station on the valley floor (see photo). Fairly nearby is a ... read more

Last night I went out to eat and had a Swiss tradition for dinner: fondue. Appenzell, the town where I stayed, has its own cheese and its own beer (see photo). I thought both were pretty good, although I couldn't help thinking that eating fondue is a little like eating a cheese pizza in bite-sized chunks. This morning I drove into central Switzerland and paid a visit to Fortress Furigen, a decommissioned WWII defensive fort buried deep in a mountainside (see photo of entrance disguised as a shed). At the beginning of WWII, the Swiss were concerned that Nazi Germany might cut through their territory on their way to invade France. Later they were concerned that either the Nazis or Italy might invade just because Switzerland was the only unconquered nation left in central Europe. Their ... read more

Tuesday, 25th April 2017 Jungfraujoch (3454m) or Top of Europe remained one of the must-visit sites for tourists coming to Switzerland. Early into the journey, I've decided NOT to pursue all the way to the summit. Hefty fees aside, the skies were overcast with dark clouds and storm looming this morning. The weatherman had made an accurate prediction. I was worried about altitude sickness too, since I did not know how well my body would react if I reached the top. Besides, there were hoards of tourists trying to make their way up in such a bad weather condition. I thought I should just take a step back and admire the Jungfraujoch from where I stood. Anyway, I started my ascend from Interlaken Ost (567m) for my journey to Lauterbrunnen (796m). From there, I made a ... read more

Monday, 24th April 2017 As touristy as it sounds, I still opted for a 2-night stay at the Stella Hotel in Interlaken. This is a fine property in a quiet neighbourhood away from the main tourist drag that overlook the Jungfrau Mountains. The German budget supermarket, Lidl is 5 minutes walk away. I arrived at Stella Hotel sometime after 4pm this afternoon. What I loved about the wooden-style cabin room was it opened straight into the mountains through the balcony. The weather is warm when I arrived this afternoon even though the reception informed that rains are expected and temperatures would plummet if I were to visit the Jungfrau mountains the following day. After gathering some useful insights pertaining to my travel plans, I quickly settled down at the comfort of my room. There is even ... read more

We spent Easter weekend with Simon and Jo and family near Interlaken in the Jungfrau region. We based ourselves in a campground near the Thunersee lake. We went up the valley each day to a different part of the mountain range. The weather wasn't great, but we managed to see snow, and not get too wet. We went up on a train and then gondola to the Mureen area. The next day we went up the gondola to Gimmerwald Village. For the day we had the worst weather we stuck a little closer to town, exploring a woodcarving village called Brienz. The Swiss villages are beautiful, with a lot of wood carving and historical type chalets. Walking in the mountains with snow around us and beautiful houses and cow bells. It felt very 'Swiss'. Being in ... read more

So here I was. I had made it to the last leg of my European jaunt; Switzerland. The night I arrived in Bilbao four-and-a-half months earlier, seems like a lifetime ago. Switzerland boasts some of the most beautiful countryside in the world. That was my main observation as my train went from Austria, through Liechtenstein and then into the green pastures, cobalt lakes and snow-capped mountains of the Swiss countryside. Travelling on the Swiss trains is so easy as well. On-board screens automatically keep you updated with the next stops, the train's speed and the ETA at each stop. As we pull into Zurich's hauptbahnhof, it even tells you which platform to catch your connecting train from. However, this beauty, ease and efficiency comes at a price. I managed to get my train to Lucerne from ... read more

EuropaPark was fab. Left Fugly early to the call of the 'coasters... First the Silver Star (in tribute to the Mercedes F1 team), and then on to Russia, two water rides, the bob sleigh and then on to the amazing Gaz Prom Blue Flame doing 0 to 100 mph in a nanosecond. We had planned to visit EuropaPark for half a day - no hope! After a sub standard meal at 'Spices', the new multi cultural 'restaurant', we left the park at c3.30pm and left Camp Resort at 4.20pm after filling up with water etc. Only one drama with Fugly before leaving. Managed to fuse the electrics by running the aircon unit and attempting to shower as well... Note to selves to switch the aircon off before using other appliances! The journey from Germany to Switzerland ... read more

Finally did it... It was unplanned since my budget is quite tight nowadays but the opportunity to experience it with friends was perfect. There was no preparation at all on my part. After the singles conference in Leysin during the weekend, we went to Geneva to look around and celebrate our winnings. Our roomates Keken and Flor told us aboit their plans the next day and Phoebe said she wants to come too. I casually said ok me too. And that's it. ? After our dinner at Molino, an Italian resto, we went back to our hotel and sleep. At exactly 6am, we woke up then ate our free breakfast and we are on our way to interlaken. Yey! The train ride from geneva took us 3 hours. I was worried i might not get back ... read more

After witnessing the breath-taking Matterhorn near Zermatt, we wondered if the next leg of our trip would be as exciting as the past few days had been. In this smallish nation, which ranks as only the 132ndlargest in the world, how much more can there be to see? We had already witnessed so many beautiful sights…..could there be more? Absolutely! The next stop on our journey would take us to Interlaken. Once again, we were able to take a train, which is rapidly becoming our favorite way to travel. This time, we would need to take three trains to get to our next destination and we almost didn’t get off at the right station, save for Merry Jo literally saying, “I think this is our stop.” Smart girl, as it turned out to be the right ... read more
