Everything is really going great so far. Day one we left valencia, and motored our way out to sea. at around 2 we put up the sail and motor sailed our way to denia. the wind never really picked up enough to just sail, but it was nice to get a feel for how to raise and lower the sail and what its like using it. we parked in denia for the night, i made fajitas for the crew and we had a pleasant evening. the next day we left at around 8am and motor our way around the head land until mid-day. the wind pick up and we raised the main sail. once we were sure the wind was sustained, we raised the jib sail, cut the motor, and we were sailing. im usally given ... read more

We have reached the halfway mark (so says the guide book) its comforting to know that It now will be quicker to continue on to Santiago then return to St-Jean! I will continue our journey in order starting from where I left off: So we left the villiage around 7:30 after a good night sleep (no snorers). The next villiage we arrived at was Espinosa del Camino which was the Villiage that I though we were staying in the night before which was slightly confusing! We continued on through the corn fields to Villafracce, a small town in the foothills of what seemed to be more mountains, and a busy stop for lorries on there way from burgos. Had breakfast there, the usual Cafe Latte but then had to wait a while for the bakery to ... read more

Ok, so I know that I've been really bad about updating... part of it is that the last city we visited kind of got ripped off. Hopefully this will be rectified, but until then... here's what I can say. The drive up to Granada was incredible. I'm really glad that we decided to drive because it really allowed us to see a completely different side of Spain. On the flip side, we also got to experience the real traffic side of Spain. And unfortunately, that meant that we arrived at the Alcazar later than our reservation... by about 30 minutes. While I thought we would be ok because our reservation was for 1/2 hour, it turned out that the actual castle was actually 1/2 into the park. Needless to say, we did not get to see ... read more

On the Road to Burgos Early Sunday morning, after another European breakfast, we boarded our bus for the ride out of town out into the countryside and eventually Burgos in the north. We had three stops on our journey north. The rolling hills of Spain are quite beautiful. Bill Zaccone likens the area to eastern Oregon. The winds blow low over the hills, and we passed many groupings of windmills. They weren’t the type that Don Quixote tilted towards. Rather, they were the more modern version. Spain has developed extensive use of wind and nuclear power. Our first stop about 45 minutes north of Madrid was El Escorial. Our purpose was to tour the most famous monastery in Spain. Built in the mid-1500s, it was built over a 21 year period by King Phillip II, to ... read more

Ola! We are now fluent in spanish, but thought we´d keep it simple and write to you in english... We had a cool london send off in Hyde Park, Jack Johnson played some background music while we had some sundowners with mates on a fine summer evening. Early morning trek up to stansted, hopefully for the last time and before you know it we were bodysurfing the waves of san sebastian in the picturesque half moon bay...it was a good start to the trip! We hooked up with the hostel staff for an all you can eat dinner and drinks, which gave us a good flavour for the town. Next morning was straight to the beach and time to work on the tan, it wasn´t all relaxation with a midmorning 400m swim against the tide to ... read more

It’s Monday here and I’m back to blogging. On Saturday morning we all rose bright and early to go on another group excursion. First we drove two hours to Salamanca where we toured the University of Salamanca which resembled something out of Harry Potter. Parts of the Univ. are still used today and it is the 3rd oldest Univ. in the world. We then toured another cathedral which looked the same as the one in Segovia. But there was an actual wedding going on which wasn’t closed off and we passed through it. There was actually a total of 2 weddings that day. We then had some time to shop where I got a Univ of Salamanca zip up sweater with matching t-shirt. Which I was thankful for because it was so cold out. After that ... read more

After the nice morning on the beach in San Sebastian and enjoying some solitude there, I went back to the hostel and woke up my friends. We headed out shortly after that toward Bilbao, which was on our way home to Salamanca. We stopped there for one major attraction... the Guggenheim. This modern art museum was built in the 20th century and is known as the most ¨vanguardista¨architecture of its time. I found the structure to be amazing, not just because it was such a neat looking building, but because it was built AFTER everything around it. For example, a huge part of the building is underneath a bridge. That bridge existed prior to the Guggenheim structure. That is to say that the architects and engineers had to design everything to allow the city to stay ... read more

After the plaza de toros action and a small party with breakfast, we headed out of town to the Basque Country coast of San Sebastian. This drive was even more beautiful than the previous one! I would absolutely go back, if anything, just for the drive through the countryside. We arrived into San Sebastian and it was raining quite a bit. So, we checked into a hostel and found a short nap waiting for us there. Only 4 of us made this trip, so it was a bit easier to make decisions on what to do and so on. Our room had 8 beds, so we shared the space with 4 guys from New Zealand! (They have such fun accents!) Anyway, the time there was really fun. The hostel had a big covered terrace and offered ... read more

This past weekend, I had the amazing opportunity to visit Pamplona during the Festivel of San Fermin. The actual saints day of San Fermin was Monday, July 7 and that is when the festivel began with the first Encierro (Running of the Bulls). We were there Saturday and Sunday morning, so saw the very end of the festivities. On Friday ... read more

Hola familia, y amigos, Can you believe I’ve already been here 3 weeks. When it’s time I’ll be ready to come home but there is still a lot I have to see and do. Hope the weather has improved in Michigan. It was actually a little cold here this weekend. This past Friday we toured the caste again ( the school never told us we were going there, so I went twice) and the main cathedral. I have enclosed pictures of the cathedral. It is a gothic cathedral which was built in the 16th and 17th centuries and was the last gothic construction built in Spain. At night the cathedral is lit up with yellow lights. See next post for Sat and Sun. Love, Nicole ... read more
