When I got to Lisbon I felt tired (probably from four days in a row of sun and beach) and wasn't up for being a tourist in a strange city by myself where I didn't know the language. Sometimes I'm in the mood for that sort of thing, but I wasn't when I arrived at the bus station in Lisbon. I've heard wonderful things about the Portuguese capital and I do hope to spend some time there some day - but it won't be this summer. I wanted to take a night train to Madrid but the bus was more convenient so I bought a bus ticket for 9pm and set off to see a bit of the city before I left Portugal to go back to Spain. I only had seven hours in Lisbon and ... read more

but this job IS actually easier than my job in japan! when i´m actually with the kids, it´s hard work and exhausting but just sooooo much fun. i love having the mornings and early afternoons off... the other day, i walked to the nearby park to have an ice cream and then carried on walking for another 20 minutes and hit a small little beach... so peaceful and very relaxing indeed! we organised a set of relay races last week which went fairly well... i think michelle and i had the most fun out of everyone as we had to demonstrate all the races to them and were in hysterics trying to do the 3 legged race! in the evening, orla and i didn´t have any duties with the kids so we watched a movie on ... read more

Well we survived 10 days with another 2500 other young ones. Pampalona for the Running of the Bulls or Festival of San Fermin has been quite an experience. Both Debbie and I think we slotted back into festival mayhem quite well. We came here last Monday to catch up with Ollie my youngest brother who seemed sure it would be an "experience" for us to see festival mayhem but the truth of it is that apart from a few "munters" it has been a relatively tame festival in terms of out right debauchery. Quite a relief given the talking up it had been given. Ollie as usual has landed on his feet here and worked out one of the best ways to have the festival experience. He is working as ground crew setting up tents, providing ... read more

This past weekend was another adventure! The fam and I drove for four hours on Thursday night to a Mediterranean town called Denia, near Valencia. The drive alone was beautiful, especially at night, seeing Valencia all lit up and tucked away in mountains. We arrived at The Marriot which is a vvvvery nice five-star hotel. Rafa and family and friends have an annual golf tournament, so I met about eight other families upon our arrival! "My" family is ALWAYS with other people so there's never a dull moment. I was pleasantly surprised to meet a girl my age, named Yasmin, who was an au pair as well! She had just begun and looked a little nervous and frazzled with her kids, sitting in the hotel restaurant. I thought back to my first few days here and ... read more

Yay! I finally found a computer. The pictures on this blog are from Almeria, which is a beach town on the coast of Spain, as well as Barcelona. In Almeria we spent the day at the beach and I finally got to see the Mediterranean Sea for the first time. Saweeet! In Barcelona, we saw the Sagrada Familia, one of the most beautiful and intricately designed buildings Ive ever seen. Anywho, we have just arrived in Rome during the night, so Im anxious to see what we have in store for us. Sorry for the quick notes, its just that theres always someone waiting in line to use the computer after me. love to all! ... read more

nothing too out of the ordinary happened this weekened: we went out friday night with some friends from France and Spain. Our rational was celebrating the 4th of July. The two high school boys that are living with me planned this huge dinner with typical Independence Day food, to try and share the culture with our family. We made potatoe salad, ribs (that was interesting), corn on the cob, had water melon and one of them made brownies. They planned it all, and I only helped a little. It was pretty impressive how well they pulled it off. Sadly, they are leaving this Friday. Although i will miss them, I am excited to be no my own in the house so I don't have the tempatation of speaking English. We went to the beach on Saturday. ... read more

Faltan 27 días...... read more

Ok heres the story. ive taken a position. i wont describe it as a job because the is no monetary compensation. Ive joinded the crew of a sailboat headed from valencia, spain around gibralter, up through portugal, past france and over to the UK. its a long trip, and may take as long as a month to make. the real highlights are free room and board while on the boat, a free boat tour up the atlantic coast, and free sailing instruction from the mechanics, helming, and navigating. Who knows what else might come of it. We set sail on friday, hopefully. Beyond a mere deck hand, ill also be serving as the ships cook. This should really put my cooking skills to the test as i have only 2 small gas burners and an oven ... read more
