July 1 - 5 I took a ferry from Tangier, Morocco to Algeciras, Spain. It took less than an hour - it was a cool way to see a country for the first time. The countryside down near Gibraltar is covered with these monstrous wind generators. Each blade must be over 100ft... I took an afternoon train (6hr) to Madrid. I didn't have a Spain guide book, so I had to borrow one on the train to research how to get around Madrid and Barcelona and find places to stay. Unfortunately, the only one I could find was in Spanish (which I don't speak). I was able to draw a few maps and write down a few hotel options. When I arrived I was told there were nearly no hotel rooms left in the city because ... read more

Hola from Barcelona! Greetings from sunny and warm Barcelona. We just saw Sagrada Familia, the church designed by Antoni Gaudi, an amazing and "gaudy" building. Our adventures have entailed non-stop action-packed adventure...thus far we have been to Madrid and Bilbao. Bilboa and Gehry´s Guggenheim were amazing!! (Despite some problematic aspects (and sleep deprivation).) At a later time I shall describe it all in detail with photos. So, I fear, this entry will be far from lackluster.... Tomorrow we leave Spain, onward to France. Wishing you all a happy 4th! With love, Wendy (and Val) P.S. Congrats to Steffi & Thorsten!! Go Deutschland (Germany)!! P.P.S. Lawrence, thanks for your recommendations but I was unable to find them. P.P.P.S. Nicki, we just saw flamenco dancers and musicians...I tried to take many photos for you, but alas, my camera ... read more

The next day after sleeping I went to the local train station and grabbed a train to Barcelone. The €5 train ride was about 1.5 hours and landed right to Barcelona-Sants station. Once there, I grabbed the Metro to Catluyna to check out La Ramblas! This street was amazing, packed with shops, acts, and different types of people in the middle of the street. It was amazingly lively and packed like a motha******. After walking down La Rambla I ended up at the Olympic village where I saw one of the main stadiums and the amazing shoreline. Barcelona is probably one of the most amazing sight-seeing cities in my experience. Every building has some sort of history and architecture to it. The cathedrals stand out if you look into the city, especially La Catedral de Barcelona ... read more

Fire Walking in Barcelona Sorry guys that it has been awhile since the last time I had written. In this episode of how the stomach churns (sometimes)….Christine finds herself scared to death with large booms and pops from all over the city. Are we being invaded? Are the Barceloneans crazed pyromaniacs? The birds flew so did my pen each time a firecracker went off. Intrigued? Read on….Do I have your attention yet? O.K. I landed in Barcelona, which is mega huge compared to Valencia, right smack in the middle of Festival. The Celebrations of San Sebastian and San Joan. I was told that the fireworks are to frighten off the evil spirits. If anyone wants to add their two cents in to why the fireworks besides scaring me and the birds you are welcomed to join ... read more

Day One We took an overnite train from Paris to Barcelona, which included a three hr wait at the Paris airport with guards with machine guns. Any yes we did get one of those cute little couchettes like last year WendyMum! It was not a restful sleep and when we arrived at our hostel on Las Ramblas they were still serving breakfast and we had to wait 3hrs to check in. It was extremely hot and we were exhausted, but couldn´t waste the day sleeping. So after check-in, the first order of business was food. Our first offical meal in Spain, the country with the best food in the world, was KFC! We were so hungry and that was the first thing we saw, and it was delicous :) Anyways, the day was full of Gaudi ... read more

Unfortunately for the French, our World Cup luck took a bit of a slide. After a lazy Sunday at Christina and Nicola´s, including a trip to the market for the girls, a great outdoor brunch, some ice cream cones, and an awesome seabass dinner cooked by Christina, we went out to watch the second half of the match against South Korea, but could only manage a tie for them. Part of it may have been the French crowd, which was the tamest of the four countries we´ve witnessed so far. The decibel level only rose after Korea tied it up late, and victory no longer seemed probable. The next morning, we headed out to the Brazil embassy. Christina told us the night before of her inability to cross the Brazil border from Argentina (her - "You ... read more

Hiya to all, I have finally landed in Gregoryland, South Wales and what did we all do first?? Yep, you guessed it! Myself, Shani, Chris and Chris's workmate Iestyn decided to point our noses south and follow the sweet smell of two-stroke and burning rubber to Circuit de Catalunya. (For all you non-MotoGP people thats bike racing) Wild horses couldn't have kept us away! A fantastic five days of numerous cafes, coffees, cathedrals, sightseeing, sangrias... oh and the race to go to as well. We even managed to catch a few soccer games. Barcelona was amazing and the race days soooo much fun. The crowd here is so different, very vocal and you can actually party in the stands without being told to sit by overzealous security people (you know like the ones at Adelaide oval ... read more

The smell of two-stroke and the sound of engines was too much to resist and a detour was needed to the MotoGP in Catalunya. In between the hotdogs and beer I saw lots of crashes, a very exciting race and even managed to fit in a day of sightseeing.... read more
