Arrived in Cordoba this morning. Is a journey of less than an hour, but had to go through rigourous security checks at the train station, having my bag x- rayed etc. Cordoba fro Seville is on the line to Madrid, which is where the bombings happened a few years back, so imagine that´s had an impact. Cordoba is really lovely, and I much prefer it to Seville. The little back streets have been designated a World Heritage Site (or similar), and you can see why, especialy in the Juderia. The lanes are narrow and cobbled, with white, islamic influenced buildings and, apart from the rather discreet signs advertising restaurants, and the odd (and very annoying) car trying to manoever its way through a landscape that wasn´t designed with it in mind, you could almost be back ... read more

We were staying in Seville for 5 days, with intent to use it as a base for a couple of day trips into the countryside. We even had a tentative idea that we could go to Morocca - the boat goes across from the south coast and takes 35 min! - however further investigations revealed that it only went to Tangiers, and it would have cost us around $400 AUD for the day trip - not worth it to see Tangiers in my book!! An early morning in Cordoba But there is still plenty to see around Seville. The most obvious visit is Cordoba, which was an ancient capital of Al-Andalus back when the Muslims ruled the south of Spain. It was a freezing cold day and we left really early in the morning to beat ... read more

Cordoba: We visited the great mosque (in Spanish called Mezquita). it was built in 712AD ( yes 712AD). It’s the biggest mosque in the world since and still is. The brochure says it has 1000 colossal pillars and I would have believed if it says 10000. Unfortunately the Christians Catholics have destroyed the original artworks to transform it into a Cathedral. I’m not sure they succeeded. The Jewish quarter has been well preserved offering a lot of restaurants and small hotels. We enjoyed a good afternoon going up and down the narrow streets of the Kasbah. We stopped at what we mistakenly thought to be a café, but it was a bar specialising in a sort of special wine. We moved instead to chocolatier and enjoyed a nice gateau.... read more

Well… it has been quite the week! Thanksgiving turned out fabulous! We ended up having more guests than we originally planned, we had 9 in total. It was Cecilia, Rachel and myself, along with David, Ana, Lourdes and Sole from our school, and Mari Carmen from Cecilia’s school and her boyfriend’s friend Vicente. We started the day by buying 7 kilos of turkey. We went to the butcher shop across the street from our house and the man there was very nice. He cut the turkey for us and cleaned it. We took it home and seasoned it and put it into the refrigerator. After school we came home and started preparations for dinner. Around 8:30 or so, guests started to arrive. We had wine and a few small snacks before dinner. Since our oven is ... read more

It was a wonderful weekend! Last week at school we spent time telling the kids what Thanksgiving was and why we celebrate it. It was pretty funny having to explain the meaning behind Thanksgiving in Spanish. The 5 year olds couldn’t really remember much about what I taught them about the day, but they remembered that we eat turkey. We did a lot of coloring as well. David, Rachel and I worked on the “Thanksgiving Tree” which is starting to look really cool. This week we will give each students a big leaf made out of colored paper and they will write what they are thankful for on the leaf and we will put it on the tree. Thursday night we went out for a drink with Lourdes, David, and Sole, all teachers from our school. ... read more

Happy Halloween Everyone! Sorry this entry is so late! I have been plowing through midterms for the past two weeks, and so I never got a chance to post these pictures, even though I went to Cordoba on the 17th. It was a fantastic trip!! The visit was entirely based around architectural sites, because I went with my Islamic art and architecture class, so unfortunately I didn't get to see any of modern Cordoba. The first part of the trip involved going outside of the city and touring ruins. There wasn't much to see, honestly, so I didn't bring my camera. Later, we went and visited the Great Mosque; that is what all the pictures are from. It was a very impressive visit, especially since I have learned so much about the building in class. It ... read more

The wet weather is behind us and it is hot and sunny again. We are in Andalusia and there are so many olive trees. I don't think Tim appreciated me saying “what a lot of olive trees” every 5 minutes on the drive here. One of the reasons that I wanted to visit Cordoba is the Mezquita, and it certainly didn't disappoint. The mesquita is a massive mosque that has been converted into a Catholic cathedral. Because of this the interior has an interesting mix of styles. Inside there are lots of orange and white giant arches that are supported by over 800 columns. The photos don't due it justice, not to mention that they are a bit fuzzy as it was fairly dark in there. Some of the arches have been painted with Frescos as ... read more

The river was absolutely amazing! The water was so cold and it really helped calm the afternoon heat a bit. It was just beautiful being in the countryside & seeing the mountains! Last night was pretty fun. After I got back from the river and there were people headed up to a little bar around the corner to watch the soccer game. Madrid won and their now in the final euro cup game!!! People were extatic here - big spain flags flying out of cars & horns beeping everywhere! i tried a bunch of different food from around here. There was this salad (called russian salad, which seemed like the not good thing to do since Madrid was playing Russia!) But anyway, it was made with potatoes, hardboiled eggs, tuna, and some kind of white dressing ... read more
