In 1918 the Slovaks joined the closely related Czechs to form Czechoslovakia. Following the chaos of World War II, Czechoslovakia became a Communist nation within Soviet-ruled Eastern Europe. Soviet influence collapsed in 1989 and Czechoslovakia once more became free. The Slovaks and the Czechs agreed to separate peacefully on 1 January 1993. Slovakia joined both NATO and the EU in the spring of 2004. To be updated

Our last day in Polannd was very wet, we had great plans to see all of the things that we weren't able to on Friday, due to the holiday, but after wandering around Krakow all morning in the rain, we dis covered that everything was shut on the Saturday too. After eating too much Sauerkraut for lunch, we retreated to our hostel and got dry and warm again. The afternoon was spent watching the Olympics, amd preparing ourselves for the 7am train the next morning, that meant leaving the hostel at 6am! The journey to Bratislava was pleasantly uneventful, although we [View Full Entry]

20-08-08 Poles Apart We spent the rest of yesterday (19th) in Trencin, we really couldn’t get to grips with the place at all. It has this magnificent fortress - Unesco listed, and yet they seem pretty unenthusiastic about foreign tourism. In the fortress they make a point of nothing that the only language spoke by staff is Slovak, the national language. Hard to tell whether this is typical of other sites, but it is kind of a strange feeling being in a place that really doesn’t want too much to do with anyone who speaks another language - German or English.

FROM BUDAPEST TO POLAND Europe » Slovakia
THROUGH SLOVAKIA TO POLAND On Wednesday, August 6th, we left early from Budapest for Poland. We had asked our tour company, Ayelet Tours, to put on a stop in Slovakia at the Museum in Banska Bystrica instead of driving straight through to Krakow. This museum is dedicated to the Slovakian Uprising against the Nazis, an uprising led from this small city near the Tatras Mountains. The small museum is inspiring and so well done. The man who took us through, one of the researchers or program people from the museum, was so dedicated to its mission. It showed the pride of [View Full Entry]

Alright, so it's been crazy since my last post from Berlin. I can't believe it's only been a week since I left Berlin to go to Prague, and have since been to Krakow, Auschwitz, and now I' in Bratislava. I don't know how far around the world news has made it of the train crash in the Czech Republic, but for those of you who haven't heard, a bridge collapsed on a train yesterday in the Czech Republic, killing 7 people and injuring 70 (according to the BBC). For us, however, this was not just any train, but the train that [View Full Entry]

EN: On Friday I went to Bratislava to collect our visa. All went smoothly, they were issued to us. I had some other things to do there, do some shopping, unlock a mobile phone etc. .... so I strolled a lot through the streets. You meet lot of people, some guy asking for some change (for food, of course !), then some smartly dressed young lads, who wanted to talk to me about Jesus (and next step would be they saying that they are the one and only group that follows the right path ). It was very hot day, and [View Full Entry]

EN: We spent some nice time with our friends in beautiful Orava and Liptov region. First 3 days near Oravsky Podzamok. The main acitivities were drinking, chatting, cooking goulash, barbecue etc :) But we also visited the castle in the village. Check the photos. Movie: "Nosferatu, eine Symphonie des Grauens" has been filmed there (classic from 1922 !!). This castle is also the second most visited castle in Slovakia (after Bojnice castle). After those 3 days some of us set off for a hiking through mountains to Liptov region. We hiked thr [View Full Entry]
