I apologize for not writing this blog entry several months ago, but we just received our wedding pictures a few days ago. Sylvia and I came to Slovakia this year knowing that we would get married here on the 2nd of January, 2010. For this reason, we had already started making plans in the United States and once we arrived in June, Sylvia got to work putting the plans into action. We first had to navigate a maze of legal paperwork. We had to establish my residency in Slovakia to make my situation legal, and then obtain certified copies of my necessary documents from the United States. Wie schnell die Zeit vergeht, jetzt sind wir schon über einen Monat in Bratislava. In der Wohnung haben wir uns gut eingelebt, auch Emilia und Florian gefällt es hier. Seit Ostern ist Emilia schnullerfrei - der Osterhase hat ihn mitgenommen und dafür ein Puzzle dagelassen. Florian bewegt sich seit einigen Tagen vorwärts, vor ihm ist nun wirklich nichts mehr sicher. Anton ist viel mit den Kindern unterwegs - sie kennen unter anderem bald jeden Spielplatz und sämtliche Sehenswürdigkeiten in der näheren Umgebung. Auch beim Praktikum läuft alles bestens - ein Highlight war mein gestriger Besuch im slowakischen Außenministerium, wo ich inmitten eines handverlesenen Publikums den Worten des slowakischen Präsidenten, des Ministerpräsidenten, des Außenministers, des EU-Kommissars, etc. lauschen durfte. Mittlerweile haben wir uns ganz gut eingelebt. Die erste Erkältungswelle ist so gut wie überstanden und die ersten Erfahrungen am Arbeitsplatz beziehungsweise daheim sind gemacht. Nach kleineren Anfangsschwierigkeiten funktioniert sowohl das eine als auch das andere nun von Tag zu Tag besser... Hier seht ihr ein paar Bilder von unserer Wohnung. Allen Unkenrufen zum Trotz haben wir unser gesamtes Gepäck in unserem Auto untergebracht, es ging also auch ohne Bus (Caddy (lieber Ronny ;-) ). Wild entschlossen stiegen wir trotz widriger Wetterbedingungen ins Auto und starteten gen Salzburg - und erkannten recht schnell, dass die fortschreitende Zeitangabe im Navi nicht eine falsche Uhrzeit, sondern die jeweils angepasste Ankunftszeit wiedergibt. Nach "nur" neun Stunden (statt geplanter vier Stunden) erreichten wir schließlich unser Zwischenziel am Mondsee bei Salzburg. Die Weiterreise am Folgetag verlief problemlos, wir trafen noch bei Tageslicht in Bratislava ein und konnten sofort unsere Wohnung beziehen. Das neue Zuhause ist fast perfekt - lediglich Tisch und Stühle fehlten. Dies behoben wir am nächsten Tag mit einem Ausflug zu IKEA Bratislava. We made our way to Bratislava by train. We had risen quite early to do so and were having a rather sleepy train journey until we were joined by a Slovakian man who called himself Julio. Considering it was about 11 a.m. he must have been up and drinking since at least 6 a.m., or just not slept from the night before, as he was far gone to say the least. He insisted on trying to speak to us using a mixture of Slovakian, grunts, hand signals and frequently asking us, "Das Gooood?!". Oh, and he did know a bit of Spanish?!! It was hilarious. The hilarity hit a climax when he and Pat danced to N.W.A. together whilst he held bolt cutters that he had produced from his bag. I've tried many times to upload ... read more

Slovakia-what? Yes, I think many people are wondering are wondering why I venture to this random country. But that’s what travelling is all about right? Going to random different places! I bet most people I know can’t say that they’ve been to Slovakia, so ha, I have one up on you ;) Besides that it’s also broke up my trip to Krakow, Poland. So this was really the official first time of me training it alone. Daunting? Just a little. When you don’t speak the language and don’t know how the whole system works, it’s even more confusing. But I was more than happy to take up the challenge. My problem is, is that I tend to doubt my decisions once of made then, although my instincts are usually right. Florencia, Italia, a 17 de noviembre del 2008. En alcance al ultimo correo les mando mas fotos del Este Europeo. Despues de Budapest (no me queria ir de alli tampoco), me fui a Bratislava. Como referencia creo que ya les habia dicho que este era el pais de la pelicula "Hostel". Pues Eslovaquia es un pais muy adormilado, la gente gusta de irse a sus casas muy temprano y los negocios cierran muy temprano. Esta ciudad tiene mas movimiento que Kosice (la ciudad donde caminaba yo solo a las 8 de la noche), pero igual les da por irse a casa tempranito. El centro historico es chico, bonito y limpio, el resto de la ciudad es como un super infonavit de los viejos (no adjunto fotos porque son iguales a los edificios de Kosice). Bratislava, Eslovaquia, a 3 de noviembre del 2008. Saludos a todos alla por TJ y LTO: Les mando fotos de la ciudad de Kosice --mas de 200 mil almas--, que es la segunda ciudad mas grande de Eslovaquia, pais que era parte de Checoslovaquia, pero que a principios de los anos 90's unos bribones la independizaron --le llamaron el divorcio de terciopelo-- para hacer el negocio de su vida. A la fecha esos bribones siguen viviendo del presupuesto y de la politica, peleandose entre ellos, pero bueno, dentro de lo bueno para los eslovacos fue que hubo mas inversion y que el pais entro a la Union Europea. Ah, tambien Eslovaquia es el pais de la pelicula "Hostel"... La ciudad es candidata para ser capital cultural europea del 2013.... Mis problemas empezaron cuando a estar aún ... read more

This has been our first Christmas spent in Slovakia and so I thought I would share a little bit about the traditions and culture that surrounds the Christmas season. Christmas traditions begin a little earlier in Slovakia (and Eastern Europe) than in the United States. This is due mainly to the celebration of St. Nicholas Day on the 6th of December. Of course, the legends upon which Santa Claus is based are derived from the stories attributed to St. Nicholas. Children leave their shoes near a window and the next morning, they are filled with candy, nuts, and fruits, as well as chocolate representations of Nicholas or Santa Claus in modern times. Winter sports are very popular in Slovakia and early in December, the outdoor skating rink is opened to skating and hockey practices can begin. ... read more
