In 1918 the Slovaks joined the closely related Czechs to form Czechoslovakia. Following the chaos of World War II, Czechoslovakia became a Communist nation within Soviet-ruled Eastern Europe. Soviet influence collapsed in 1989 and Czechoslovakia once more became free. The Slovaks and the Czechs agreed to separate peacefully on 1 January 1993. Slovakia joined both NATO and the EU in the spring of 2004. To be updated

BRATISLAVA 30.09.08 OK now it comes out that Bratislava is the city with the highest rate of kiwis outside New Zealand! Or maybe is all made for me so I will get used to it. The guy with the messy bed ended up being from NZ and in the room there are other two girls, also kiwis. Now we're wandering around the city and the only two people around that are english-speaking, guess what? Are kiwis! So kiwis rule. Forget about all that stories saying that Italians are everywhere. We lost it. Apart from that Bratislava looks like a pretty anonymous [View Full Entry]

Bratislava
Bratislava
Bratislava

Sat, 28 Sep, about 11:45 PM We got off yesterday with little incident, getting through Hartsfield with no delays and then making the connection in Prague with about ten minutes to spare. The only glich thus far is that Grandma doesn’t have her suitcase. It clearly took a wrong turn somewhere so now the bag police are out searching for it. We are hopeful it will show up before we leave Budapest tomorrow evening. Grandma is holding up quite well considering the circumstances. Nothing much happened today because it was spent mostly in just getting here. The boat is moored just [View Full Entry]

Solo in Slovakia Europe » Slovakia
After getting horribly lost trying to drop Kirstyn off at the airport in Vienna, I hit the road to Slovakia with renewed fear and doubt about travelling the lesser developed Eastern European countries on my own. Crossed the border uneventfully and managed to find a servo selling the motorway vignettes. First hurdle down, did a relatively big drive up into central Slovakia dropping in at the small village of Bojnice to admire its fairytale like castle. Things were looking pretty quiet at this stage having seen several closed campsites already so I decided to head to one that we knew would [View Full Entry]

SLovakia and trouble Europe » Slovakia » Kosice Region » Kosice
September the 10th by now. We awoke in Miskolc, had breakfast (scrambled egg - soon regretted that) then found out it wasnt free. We missed our train to Kocise in Slovakia by 30mins so had to wait until 3pm. No bother, i decided to send home my massive sleeping bag. So i went to the Hungarian post but they were useless and didnt bother to try and speak english for me. But then some Hungarian guy came up and explained the postoffice was rubbish, that id be lucky to find a box to send my bag in and then spent 20mins [View Full Entry]
