The political state of Russia emerged following the expansion of the principality of Muscovy - emerging from Mongol domination to conquer and absorb the surrounding principalities. The Romanov dynasty continued this expansionist policy. Peter I extended Muscovy's rule to the Baltic Sea, and the Russian Empire came into being. The dramatic fall of the Romanov dynasty, the formation of the USSR under Lenin, the brutal dictatorship of Stalin and the Cold War placed the USSR at the forefront of world politics. The USSR dissolved under Gorbachev, and 15 separate republics were formed in 1991. Although vastly reduced territorially, Russia remains a vast and powerful state, retaining political influence in the region and worldwide. To be updated

THE HERMITAGE The museum complex known as the Hermitage consists of five buildings. The first is the Winter Palace built by Peter the Great but never lived in by him. Empress Elizabeth was it’s first Royal resident. The Palace is in the Baroque style so loved by Elizabeth, with grand staircases and elaborately gilded walls and painted ceilings. Catherine the Great was Elizabeth’s daughter-in-law and a great art collector. She commissioned agents all over Europe to purchase collections as they came to market. Her first acquisition consisted of 250 pieces that had been own [View Full Entry]

THE BALLET After a quick shower, change of clothes and a snack, it was back on the bus for what was supposed to be a fifteen minute ride to the Musical Comedy Theater to see Swan. Our driver, one of three, took the route with the traffic jams. Moscow was playing St. Petersburg at the soccer stadium and the roads were clogged. Despite going on the sidewalk at points we were late on arrival and the performance had begun. Surprisingly, they sat us. We had received seat assignments on the bus but now the ushers were placing us in any available. [View Full Entry]

St. Petersburg - Day one. It will be difficult to describe the city of St. Petersburg without the overuse of “awesome”,” beautiful”, “spectacular” and other superlatives. It is a city of contrasts and it is vibrant and busy. As our tour bus leaves the port we see huge apartment blocks built in the Soviet era. Laundry can be seen hanging in front of the windows and some of the windows are covered with newspaper and plywood. The cement is crumbling and it is a depressing welcome, all the more so since the weather is cloudy and threatens rain. Shortly w [View Full Entry]

When the Soviet empire collapsed in the early nineties it was heralded in the west. The thought of centrally mandated collectivism makes a capitalist's blood run cold and many (if not most) Americans view, or were taught to view this shift as a great victory in the name of the human spirit. The communists doubtlesssly had innumerable failings but, as western popular media triumphed through "kill-a-commie" films and the end of the "Cold War" was heralded, many Russians suffered and starved. The loss of a way of life that was a full two generations thick proved stifling and left many without [View Full Entry]

The coach pulled into St. Petersburg on the morning of August 4th. Tom came to meet me and guide me back to his friend's pad where we'd be staying for the duration of our time in St. Petes. We took the metro to an area in the south of the city for 40 pence and then travelled by bus to Irena & Sophie's flat. Having dropped off my baggage we headed back into the centre and took a walk around the city. Transport is abundant and very cheap. The underground takes you to any part of the city for 20 rubbles. 2 weeks Russia by car! After the landing in Moscow the next goal was Smolensk, which turned out to be a dusty old city " the gates to Russia". Smolensk is a "hero city"(Gorod Geroj) because whenever someone attacks Russia wanting to conquer it, Smolensk is the first destination. Afterwards we headed to Volgagrad from Moscow, 13 hours by car. On the highway the max. speed is 90 but of course everyone drives faster. Also the Police knows it and there is a police car hiding behind the trees sometimes every 5 km stopping you at every chance trying to rip [View Full Entry]

The church on spilled blood
I arrived in St.Petersburg on 14th July, its a beautiful city with lots of canals and colourful buildings, shame the locals never smile! I went to the church on spilled blood, which is just gorgeous and climbed the colonnade on St.Issacs cathedral for a stunning view of the city. We queued outside the Hermitage for as long as we were inside and went on a boat trip along one of the many canals. I met up with the rest of my group and our Russian guide who i'm heading to Mongolia with, 1 guy and 11 girls! We caught the overnight [View Full Entry]
