The political state of Russia emerged following the expansion of the principality of Muscovy - emerging from Mongol domination to conquer and absorb the surrounding principalities. The Romanov dynasty continued this expansionist policy. Peter I extended Muscovy's rule to the Baltic Sea, and the Russian Empire came into being. The dramatic fall of the Romanov dynasty, the formation of the USSR under Lenin, the brutal dictatorship of Stalin and the Cold War placed the USSR at the forefront of world politics. The USSR dissolved under Gorbachev, and 15 separate republics were formed in 1991. Although vastly reduced territorially, Russia remains a vast and powerful state, retaining political influence in the region and worldwide. To be updated

We arrived in Irkutsk in the evening and after we found our hostel we headed out to find food but to no avail, so we ended up purchasing some bread, ham and cheese and of course beers and headed back for an early night. After 3 days on a train doing nothing you'd think we were itching to get out there and see the sights but to be honest we couldn't be bothered so we parked up in a bar with some outside space so we could sit in the sun and drink our way through the day. Tony had read [View Full Entry]

When asked what the cabin on the train is like well picture a small wooden box the size of a prison cell if you will, now add 4 people in that space and imagine that box shaking for 55 hours and you pay for the pleasure......!!!!! A slight exaggeration but you get the point, its really fun and you will be amazed how the time flies - yet another example of time warp Russia. Today we set off on this 55 hour journey, on the train the carridges have a toliet each end, the centre is all cabins and then there [View Full Entry]

Definitions: gol -mongolian for river, nuur -Mongolian for lake, aimag -a mongolian state or province, asalam aleykhem -Kazakh for peace be with you. The Bohmoron Gol drains several lakes high in the boundary ranges which seperate Russia from Mongolia. It then flows through a large, wide (50 km +), rocky valley rimmed with 4000 m + peaks before dumping heavily turbid water into broad, shallow Achit Nuur. Along this course, the river devides Uvs aimag to the northeast from Bayan-Olgii aimag, the western most political division in the country. In dividing the two aimags, the mighty [View Full Entry]

We awake to the usual low dim of traffic and on T's persistance we get up early for breakfast - with the slight optimism that a full english with proper coffee was waiting for him downstairs, we venture down. Yet again we are disapointed breakfast at the Yekaterinburg train station hotel - who's proper name i have forgotten, consisted of a square lump of unscrambled egg, cold sausage, potatoes and weird red additive/radioactive enhance'fruit ' juice. We check out and advance down to our pre-booked hostel Hostel Yekaterinburg (this is the correct name) 30 mins later and still yomping and we [View Full Entry]

The Baltika Index - BI Definition : the price at which 500ml of locally produced beer of 5% abv strength can be purchased from a shop or hostel in a given location, expressed as a decimal fraction of the price of 500ml of Baltika 3 lager as purchased from the mini-bar in room 418 of the Hotel Vladamir, Vladamir, Russia in June 2009 (50 rubles or approx £1) I have this theory that the relative expense of town can pretty much be determined by looking at the price of a pint of lager, that's certainly been my experience in the UK [View Full Entry]

We wake to find our cabin buddies gone and a new team member in their place, well we use the term arrive very vaguely as she was there in body but spent the next 15 hours asleep, she had an arse like a member of thr Klumps and she was sporting a leopard skin pair of PJ's that made me think of that scene in road trip ' what are those - did you skin a cheetah'. Fed up with the site we move towards the restaurant car in search of cold beer and company! Success we found cold beer and [View Full Entry]

Day 161 St Petersburg After a smooth train journey from Moscow we arrived into St Petersburg at 8am. It was a lovely fresh morning with the sun shining. We are staying with family friends, Mike and Sue Allen, as Mike got a new job here last year. We walked down the main street Nevsky Prospekt towards their apartment, which is in a great location in the city centre. It took us about 20 minutes to arrive at the apartment where Mike was waiting for us as Sue is away. After giving us a city overview Mike left for work and we [View Full Entry]

Moscow comrade!!!!!!!! We arrive into Moscow's 'st petersberg' train station in the morning and wander towards the Moscow metro with intrepidation, we have heard various stories about how difficult the Moscow metro is to navigate. We purchase our tickets and head down, the first thing that hits you is the glass / crystal chandeliers that line the ceiling of the station, each station is different with differing mosaics and chandeliers, you don't get them on the London Underground! We studied our maps and the metro map and match up the various words to identify the correct station to alight [View Full Entry]

Perm in Summer.
Sveta and I spent my second fourth of July in Perm much like we spent the first: wandering around town. We found a side road that led to an unknown green valley. It was the usual Perm summer scene: industry and village. Ponies, razor wire, and pipes intermixed amid all that green. The overgrowth was the first thing that really struck on the ride home from the airport last year. Perm was covered in weeds, grasses and trees. The city was often hidden, and wooden houses and footpaths nestled in the valleys between apartment blocks. We eventually wandered down to the [View Full Entry]

Day 159 Moscow is the capital and largest city in Russia, it has the largest metropolitan area in Europe and ranks among the largest urban areas in the world (7th largest) with a population of 17 million people. After a good buffet breakfast at the hotel we got the metro into the centre of the city for some sight seeing. As soon as we stepped out of the metro station we saw the red tall walls of the Kremlin. We walked towards the gardens in front of the Kremlin where we came across the eternal flame of the unknown soldier and [View Full Entry]
