The political state of Russia emerged following the expansion of the principality of Muscovy - emerging from Mongol domination to conquer and absorb the surrounding principalities. The Romanov dynasty continued this expansionist policy. Peter I extended Muscovy's rule to the Baltic Sea, and the Russian Empire came into being. The dramatic fall of the Romanov dynasty, the formation of the USSR under Lenin, the brutal dictatorship of Stalin and the Cold War placed the USSR at the forefront of world politics. The USSR dissolved under Gorbachev, and 15 separate republics were formed in 1991. Although vastly reduced territorially, Russia remains a vast and powerful state, retaining political influence in the region and worldwide. To be updated

Piling out of the train at 6am in Irkutsk with creaking and cracking backs, knees, hips and shoulders, we were all looking forward to a hot shower and a decent stretch of the legs. Unfortunately we had an hour and a half drive up the road to the small lakeside town of Listvianka. The town is situated on the southern end of Lake Baikal, which is the eighth largest lake by area in the world but is the deepest at more than 1800 meters and holds more than 20% of the world’s fresh water, more than all the Great Lakes combined. We're in Asia! Europe » Russia » Urals » Yekaterinburg
(written by Sam whilst Laura snoozes after spending all night being disturbed by some Slovakians) Good morning everybody Today we awoke in Asia, in a very small hostel that doesn't look as if it has changed at all in the past 40 years. The bathroom is a bit of a horror story, but the owner is lovely and speaks some English which is a bonus. Moscow was fantastic. A city of three colliding eras: '50s, early '90s, and iphones. Mulletted iphone users were a real highlight in fact. Stalin's Seven Sisters are fearsome gothic behemoths that dominate the skyline, and the [View Full Entry]

My first experience in Moscow, post hangover thank god, was the wonderful subway system. In the communist days, they decided to make the subway system the envy of the world, and having taken underground systems in London, Rome, New York, Boston and a half dozen others, they have succeeded. Each station is an architectural work of art in itself. Each stop is different, not just in the statues, color of marble walls or ceiling frescoes, but in the size and shaping of the pillars. The station near our guesthouse had a flying motif, so the frescoes had planes, people diving, birds [View Full Entry]

The Trans Siberian railway is a long way. There is no way around it. Our portion of it (by no means the whole length) was 83 hours, 5193 kilometers and 79 stops. At least for this journey we were in second class, which meant only 4 of us in a compartment, a door that we could actually close and beds that were just long enough to fully stretch out. While most of the people on the tour decided to buy whole bunches of food for the journey I bought just enough to get me through the first afternoon and breakfast the [View Full Entry]

We're here! Europe » Russia » Northwest » Moscow
Hallo! Only got time for a very quick hello, but just wanted to let you know we're here safe and having a great time. The weather is glorious, and cyrillic is impossible. Ordering non-alcoholic beer has to be a first in Russia! We will make a longer posting when we get the chance and in particular, will be in touch with some of you individually to let you know what we've been up to. Only on a borrowed computer at the hostel at present - but we will attempt to use it again later today. Hope you're all well Sam and [View Full Entry]

Peoples, The first update since my arrival in Moscow last saturday, no worries me and my buddies are doing pretty well in the land of glasnost & perestroijka! Flying to Moscow friday was quite an experience as I was the only traveller who didn't have the russian nationality :) Checking in at the Dublin airport went fairly smooth, even saw a familiar face in the fella who issued my visa a few weeks ago :p random! Anyhoe, S7 airlines flew under 4 hours to Moscow where I landed at 6am. Pretty wasted as I only slept for an hour or so, [View Full Entry]

Yes, Yes, Yes, We did it !!! 9289km by train !!! Finally arrived in Vladivostok ;-) For the second part of the Trans-Siberian, we shared the room with a ... military guy !!! Funny, in Russia, we've met almost only people working in the Marines... It's like in this country, if you can't become a gangster... euh meaning an Oligark, you're future is in the Army !!! With this guy, Vova, we experienced the same type of relationship as we already did here: you need 2 days to start having a friendly relationship even if we didn't share the same language...
