The political state of Russia emerged following the expansion of the principality of Muscovy - emerging from Mongol domination to conquer and absorb the surrounding principalities. The Romanov dynasty continued this expansionist policy. Peter I extended Muscovy's rule to the Baltic Sea, and the Russian Empire came into being. The dramatic fall of the Romanov dynasty, the formation of the USSR under Lenin, the brutal dictatorship of Stalin and the Cold War placed the USSR at the forefront of world politics. The USSR dissolved under Gorbachev, and 15 separate republics were formed in 1991. Although vastly reduced territorially, Russia remains a vast and powerful state, retaining political influence in the region and worldwide. To be updated

Based On A True Story Europe » Russia
My muse, my wife, my Fiona has recently gone through an accelerated grieving process over the loss of her dearly beloved Asia. As witness to this painful process, I felt it was my duty to document its progression. I now offer my observations to you in the hopes that by reading this account and viewing these images you may feel that you shared, in some small part, in Fiona's path from the depths of denial and anger, through the purgatory of bargaining and depression and into that promised land of acceptance. Denial Initially my poor misguided darling believed that the co [View Full Entry]

Russia cont’d The Hermitage is a very impressive building - it just goes on and on… and inside is the largest collection of all sorts of art - Picasso by the rooms, Matisse, Gauguin, Rembrandt, etc. The rooms are gargantuan in height and length and the paintings seem to fill all available corners and more. And then there are Roman, Greek, Siberian and Egyptian antiquities to name a few…. The Winter palace was built by Katherine the Great to house her multitude of boyfriends… They were housed on the second level and the food was lifted up to their level without [View Full Entry]

To most Americans, hockey is the bastard child of professional sports. With so many other sporting options to choose from, the Stanley Cup Finals take a far backseat to the World Series, Superbowl, and dare I say it, the NBA Playoffs. Head up north to Canada, and hockey is a way of life. Head across the pond to Russia, and hockey is, well, a great way to spend a Wednesday night. On our last day of study tour, our group was presented with an interesting option. Shell out over $100 to see a performance of the Nutcracker ballet near the Hermitage, [View Full Entry]

Hi Folks, It's me again :) I know, it has been a while but finding access to the web in Siberia is like finding a needle in a haystack......Rite, we arrived in Irkutsk saturday week ago after 78 hours on the train which was quite an experience! Moscow has treated us very well and it was pretty emotional saying goodbye :p Our train departed at 23.30 sharp so we were there at least 30 mins in advance - don't want to miss this one aye:p Our compartiments were very basic with 2 bunks on each side and our gear was supplied [View Full Entry]

When a dream comes true…

It's a toilet Jim, but not as we know it
We've finally made it to proper Russia. Siberia was at it's bleakest when we arrived in Irkutsk...just two degrees, though as a treat, not raining. Irkutsk is the sort of town that you could quite happily chill out in if it wasn't for the fact that it's too chilly. A walk along the riverfront with a brisk north wind was enough to give the proverbials on the brass monkey a lot of movement. And this was a drop in temperature from twenty-five degrees the day before. With a half day sightseeing under our belt, we moved on to Olkhon Island - [View Full Entry]

Um 8 Uhr Morgens erwache ich unsanft als unser Honcho Elina eifrig an die Türe des Schlafabteils von Zug 3 klopft. „Guys get outta here you arrived, the train will contiue to Sibiria in 2 minutes“ Damn, so hatte ich mir meine Ankunft in Moskau nicht vorgestellt. Der Schlafwagen war sowas von bequem, ich habe gepennt wie ein Baby. Während ich mich in den 2min relativ locker anziehe und mein Rucksack packe ist meine mitreisende Engländerin eher am Anschlag. Vor allem weil sie‘s zuerst mal irgendwie (mit der Eleganz eines einflügligen Junikäfers) vom oberen Bett runter schaffen [View Full Entry]

Piling out of the train at 6am in Irkutsk with creaking and cracking backs, knees, hips and shoulders, we were all looking forward to a hot shower and a decent stretch of the legs. Unfortunately we had an hour and a half drive up the road to the small lakeside town of Listvianka. The town is situated on the southern end of Lake Baikal, which is the eighth largest lake by area in the world but is the deepest at more than 1800 meters and holds more than 20% of the world’s fresh water, more than all the Great Lakes combined. We're in Asia! Europe » Russia » Urals » Yekaterinburg
(written by Sam whilst Laura snoozes after spending all night being disturbed by some Slovakians) Good morning everybody Today we awoke in Asia, in a very small hostel that doesn't look as if it has changed at all in the past 40 years. The bathroom is a bit of a horror story, but the owner is lovely and speaks some English which is a bonus. Moscow was fantastic. A city of three colliding eras: '50s, early '90s, and iphones. Mulletted iphone users were a real highlight in fact. Stalin's Seven Sisters are fearsome gothic behemoths that dominate the skyline, and the [View Full Entry]

My first experience in Moscow, post hangover thank god, was the wonderful subway system. In the communist days, they decided to make the subway system the envy of the world, and having taken underground systems in London, Rome, New York, Boston and a half dozen others, they have succeeded. Each station is an architectural work of art in itself. Each stop is different, not just in the statues, color of marble walls or ceiling frescoes, but in the size and shaping of the pillars. The station near our guesthouse had a flying motif, so the frescoes had planes, people diving, birds [View Full Entry]
